I'm 70 yrs old and grew up on Trane, Miles, Diz, Blakey, Rollins etc etc so maybe that's what's going on with me. I don't research websites before going to a concert. If you read what I wrote, I went based on what I heard on the cd "Canvas". That was my advertisement.

I'm going through it at 69, painful, expensive, drawn out process, can't eat, lost weight. OH well............

Before I caught Robert Glasper tonight at Yoshi's, I purchased the cd "Canvas". I like it, I guess it's this 2019 neo bop or whatever you call it. Seems like this is what the young cats(Ambrose Akinmusire) are playing these days. Almost at the last minute I see he's at Yoshi's tonight, so, based off what I heard on "Canvas", I went to see him. TOTAL disappointment. What I saw/heard sounded like a rock band, felt like I was inside a boom box, no acoustic piano, bunch of electronics, hearing the voice of Martin Luther King on the first song. I love MLK, but I go to youtube for MLK speeches. Glasper did not look professional, had on a worn looking t-shirt. The place was sold out on a Wednesday night, looked mostly like 30-40ish crowd. I should have known something was about to go wrong. Way too much base, was actually hurting my ears. I left after the first song. I was expecting to hear the same format as the cd Canvas. $40, no refund, oh well. Of course, had I known I would have stayed home. IMO, these guys need to hold onto a modicum of tradition. I was none to happy so, On my way home I played "Jackie McLean Quartet Montreal 1988" to calm myself down

Since Golson and my dad were in Bostic's band and you weren't, I'll take your word over a living master's word. Will that make you feel authenticated, make you feel like you actually know what you're talking about?
-
I care about and am aware of his music because my father, Elmon Larue Wright along with his buddy Benny Golson together played in Bostic's bands. Golson told me that they weren't play a lot of jazz in those bands.

Just listened to sound samples of the Vanguard set. He has a recurring theme to all his music, slow and dissonant, imho borderline elevator music. Just my opinion and my ears.
-
I will take a listen to the Vanguard set.

It's official, I am no longer a fan of Ambrose Akinmusire. With each release his music gets stranger and stranger. With his latest release, I'm starting to wonder, where is the Jazz. Met him, his wife and baby in the lobby at Yoshi's. Very nice young man, I just can no longer hear his music.

Wanted to see this kid so bad, bought tickets 2 months ago. There may be someone out there, but I've never heard anyone come as close to Monk as this kid does. IMHO, Monk is his base, if his pants have 4 pockets, he needs to keep Monk in the 1st one at all times, he can do whatever he wants with the other 3, but he should never leave home without Monk being in one of those pockets. Having said that I was disappointed at tonight's concert. Not one note of monk did I hear. Just checked his new cd, and it looks like he's playing his new releases. That's cool, I get it, he doesn't want to be in a Monk clone, wants to explore and do other things but never abandon Monk. Every live concert he does, he should at least play a few notes of Monk. Tonight it was "Straight but it had Chasers" Hopefully his original compositions will gain depth with age, still a genius at 14(15 in June).

Not a gripe. I went to see a band I couldn't hear. If you and others can hear them, fine. For my ears, I hear exactly what Cory Weeds is doing when he plays Jackie's music. And he's not just about Jackie. I would expect a little more from this group, they're taking on the Master's name. s
-
Spot on, he said a couple of the originals were being replaced by some of his "other friends", "I have a lot of great friends" the pianist was very good. Have not heard them on CD. It's all about opinions and personal preferences, I hear that Cory Weeds is closer to Jackie than Steven Lugerner Period.

I'm 68, been listening to jazz since I was 15. I recently saw Jacknife at the Sound Room in Oakland, CA. Huge disappointment, I came very close to leaving at intermission. With Jackie, they bit off way more than they are capable of chewing. I suggest they listen to Cory Weeds' interpretation of Jackie's music and go back to the practice room. They played a couple of cuts from Bluesnik but didn't play the title track, probably to difficult for this group. I do appreciate the effort though.

Don't know if this is the right place to write this but why are what I would call name brand jazz icons like George Benson doing gigs that are far away from population center. Benson is playing tonight at the Gallo Center For The Arts, Modesto, CA. That's 83 miles one way from Oakland/San Francisco. I don't get it.

I say he can continue to develop without going in the direction of Cecil Taylor, I strongly disagree with that. Idiosyncrasy is already in his playing. And, I'll bet he's given at least a cursory listen to the Avant Garde. Right now, at 14, I'll bet he'd choose Peterson/Monk over Taylor/Coleman.........

As I said, of course there have been others. My favorite organist Joey D is a classic example. However, I think this kid was slightly more advanced at the same age. The way he plays Monk is amazing.

I am ecstatic. I have discovered Joey Alexander, self taught 14 yr old prodigy from Jakarta. Been playing since he was 6 yrs old and was accomplished at 8. He's coming to Yoshi's in Oakland, CA in May, have my tickets already. Had to tear myself away from youtube. Listened to dad's old jazz records, dad bought him a small keyboard. Monk and Armstrong caught his interest and as they say, the rest is history. I'd like to thank Fate & Destiny for bringing his parents together. I've heard of self taught but this is unbelievable. Has the jazz music world ever seen anything like this. I'm sure someone will say there have been plenty of child prodigies.

I'm not here often but I appreciate the feedback I get from you all. I caught AA at Yoshi's in Oakland a couple of years ago and on his live sets he does speed things up a bit.

I'm a big fan of this kid, but his latest release, A Rift In Decorum: Live At The Village Vanguard, is way too somber for me. It's prevalent in all of his recordings but on this release after listening to the sound samples, I almost started crying. Too melancholy for my tastes. I'm a foot tapper, finger popper. I need a LITTLE bit of that which I do find in his other recordings but I'll have to take a pass on this latest one. Having said all that, cuts like Rollcall For Those Absent from the cd The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier To Paint will always keep me a fan of this young man.
-
Is it me or is this young lady not getting the attention she deserves. Wish I could catch her live. I hope it's the fact that maybe I just don't hear a lot in terms of todays young jazz artists, don't get out as much as I used to. There is amazing coherence and buoyancy in her ideas, crisp and crackling, never a lost note. It's like she's playing supercharged hardbop 2017 style. Just checked her discog and found a new(to me)title, Time For Love, just hit the "place your order" button on Amazon. As far as I know, she has 2 other titles, New York Attitude and North Bird. Both sets imho are superb. She is an amazing young lady with a very interesting background. Feedback would be appreciated. As you can see I'm not here very often. Thanks

You disagree with me, ok, question was is there an alternative site............
-
How many is many? This site has undergone a drastic change since I first started watching it in 1998 and now I'm bombarded with ads. Like I said, imho the site has gone from being the very best of its type to the absolute worst
-
Not sure if this is the right place, I don't go to other forums, but what has happened to allmusic.com or what was AMG., it's gone from best to worst. Is there an alternative site to allmusic.com

I haven't read everything here. So, if he hasn't been mentioned, here we go. A few years ago I discovered Frank Haynes on a Grant Green set titled "Reaching Out". He's also very good on "Osmosis" by Kenny Dorham, "The Complete One And Two Feet In The Gutter Sessions" by Dave Bailey, "Les McCann Ltd In New York" by Les McCann. He also worked with Gerald Wilson and Randy Weston........

Sonny Criss overlooked? Are you kidding me
