Another spin for this one - it is a real find. Recorded by pianist John Critchinson when has was part running the Bath ‘Jazz at the Icebox’ club and with the tape then left in a box for 40 odd years. The playing and atmosphere are great and recording more than adequate, even though there are a couple of dropouts. The usual brilliant booklet notes by Simon Spillett.

I followed it with the companion album, they were such a great team. Nelson's capacities as a sax player are underestimated, IMHO.

Uri Caine - Urlicht / Primal Light

I liked the Gramophone's review.of this when it came out: "While the project should appeal to admirers of Frank Zappa, ‘cutting-edge’ jazz and BBC Radio 3’s Mixing It, it won’t be every Mahlerian’s cup of borscht.'"

As I check out what's on at Smalls every evening on YouTube, I'm very familiar with the work of Nicole Glover, one of the best young tenorists around. Her new album gives you some idea of what she can do.

Revisiting this excellent 2011 Maxwell Davis anthology. In the booklet the producer states his intention to do a sequel that covers the same period, but it doesn’t appear to have come to fruition:
