Wayne Shorter - Emanon

67 posts in this topic

cdjapan have a listing for a new Wayne Shorter album due on 5 September called Emanon (which is consistent with this tweet). It seems to be a 3cd set. I assume that this won't be a Japanese exclusive (or at least I hope not given the price!).

Please confirm that this will be available as an American issue?

That was my understanding. Perhaps 8/24 is the release date. Some studio, some live IIRC. I am sure a press release is coming soon.

Google English translation (such as it is) of product description:

"Currently the best charisma in the jazz world, super new class album. Even now in the mid 80's, Wayne Shorter is the best charisma for the living legend that continues to give great inspiration to the jazz scene with its own creativity that overflows. The new work which is the first time in 5 and half years since GRUMMY winning Blue Note's return work "Without Net" is a gorgeous piece where a set of 3 CDs and comic books are set. CD has collaboration with Quartet and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra with Danilo Perez (p) ~ John Patitucci (b) ~ Brian Blade (ds), which has been active as a member immovable since the formation in 2001 · Track, and concert sound source in the same quartet in the UK. And comic books include comics by Wayne's own pen that he had been drawing manga favorite since boyhood. A must-have work essentially filled with Wayne World, both auditoriumally and visually. Imported artwork (limited to 2,000 sets) + Limited edition set with SHM-CD of Nippon Press."

I wonder how they will package this, what with the comic book. I am guessing oversized.

From regular checks of Wayne's Facebook page, it appears he hasn't been touring this year, and his only scheduled date is in January.  I hope that he adds some dates to promote the release.

And wasn't Emanon supposed to be a new composition for orchestra and quartet? So where is it?

Ah!

Wayne's Emanon:

... Monday brings the most expansive sounds yet with the North American debut of his newest work “Emanon.” The Detroit Jazz Festival Orchestra joins Shorter, who happens to be a lifelong science fiction fan, to perform this suite, which is also the score for a graphic novel by award-winning comic book artist Randy DuBurke (The Moon Ring and Malcolm X: A Graphic Biography).

That performance ended up getting cancelled due to weather.  I couldn't stay in Detroit for that day of music, but I had planned on watching it via the DJF streaming app.  I also was unfortunately only able to catch part of Wayne's quartet (via streaming) on the opening night due to ridiculous seating.  Fortunately, however, I did get to see Wayne in person with Leo Genovese (filling in for the late Geri Allen), Esperanza Spalding and Terri Lyne Carrington, which was a fun set.

Posted (edited)

If that ‘Live in London’ set was the 2016 one at the Barbican, I was there. The track listings for CDs 2 and 3 certainly look familiar.
