Mosaics on Spotify

9 posts in this topic

There are a few Mosaics on Spotify that are not necessarily easy to find (Spotify search by label function does not always work and often the labels inconspicuously rename the sets). I thought we might post links to the sets so that they are easy to find for those who are interested.

I recommend the Oliver Nelson set. It is all high quality. Not every session is a classic, but the average is high, as one might expect. It doesn't include the superb Cannonball "Illumination" session, but that is easy to obtain. It was great that Ollie had a collection of regulars (e.g. Danny Bank) on whom he could call. Those were the days. Most big bands bore me, especially when it's mainly blaring trumpets, but Oliver Nelson wrote for large number of "tone color" instruments - bass clarinet, flutes etc. - and that lifts it well out of the realm of boredom.

Do a Spotify search using keywords "Capitol Vault" and you get these additional results: Hank Mobley, Johnny Mercer, Gene Krupa/Harry James, Andrew Hill, Bobby Hackett, Art Pepper, Bobby Hutcherson, Bob Brookmeyer, Paul Chambers, Big John Patton, Don Pullen, Dexter Gordon, Bennie Green, Randy Weston, Dizzy Reece, along with several compilations. Too many to post links, or I'm just getting old.

Do a search for "Mosaic Records" in Spotify.  I previously created a playlist of all current Mosaics.

My library subscribes to a streaming service called Hoopla, which allows patrons to borrow titles for 7 days.  After mainly ignoring the service for years, I realized that Hoopla provides access to Universal, so I have access to several Mosaics. :)
