I've been using the speakers in my stereo system -- Pinnacle PN8's -- since my wife & I got married in 1992. I like the sound of them very much, and I got a great deal on them all those years ago. But my LOVELY wife, knowing how much I enjoy listening music, recently suggested that I upgrade them. She didn't have to twist my arm. So I dove into the internet, reading as much as I could online. More importantly, I spent a bunch of time listening to different speakers -- both at a friend's place and at a local shop. I heard models by Magnepan, Vandersteen, Wharfedale, KEF, Dynaudio, and Paradigm. The whole "research"/comparison process was good fun, an excellent excuse to hang out with some cool people and listen closely to music. This last weekend, I pulled the trigger and ordered a set of Paradigm Founder 100F speakers: They should arrive in a week or so. To say that I'm stoked is an understatement. I can't wait to hear them.

While Shirley Scott is primarily known as leader for her organ work, I am a fan of her two piano trio albums on Candid.

Understandable and I agree ... I found an original 10" copy of "This Modern World" some 40 years ago (i.e. in my rather younger days ) at a fleamarket, and a couple years ago I scored (at a giveaway price) an original of the somewhat later 12" release that combines "City of Glass" and "This Modern World". But its cover continues the "This Modern World" theme. The thumbnails on the "Nine Classic Albums V.2" CD set on Real Gone Jazz also uses a more recent cover on its photo. So unless I come across a dirt cheap copy of the 10" City of Glass with the original cover the above will (have to) do. Anything else would be overkill.

I have been reading from Jazzbo the harsh winter weather he has been having. Here in Southern Arizona winter seems to have passed us by so far. We usually have had a couple of days below freezing by now, but we have had none where I live. Though chilly in the early mornings, the temperatures in the afternoon have regularly been in the mid to high 70's.

“Miles and Monk at Newport” Sony 2 cd set, disc 2 (Monk) Pee Wee!

The new titles are in stock at Dusty Groove. I picked up the Oliver Lake and Bobby Naughton discs.

that's what I took it to mean -- high quality, smallish-run contemporary labels. If I were to add CDs, Nessa, Balance Point Acoustics, ugEXPLODE, Corbett vs. Dempsey, and Another Timbre would be up there as well. LPs, I forgot to add Open Mouth, Daksina, and Metaphon (these are not jazz).

+1 I prefer the original Dogon A.D. cover myself, though I recall Horwich saying Hemphill also preferred the Arista-Freedom design.
-
I've been spinning this record quite a bit lately. I love the un-pretentiousness of Scott's playing. Ron Carter also sounds great on this record.

Tetragon has to contain one of the best versions of "Invitation." What are some other great versions? I watched a YouTube video the other day of Roy Hargrove, an artist I never really followed, play "Invitation." Faster than Henderson, but really nice. I think Joe's tempo for this song is perfect.

I'm still a Kenton neophyte, but I linked Easy Go up above as a solid comp for those who might just want "one" Kenton album. I only have 6 Kenton discs, and that's been plenty so far. The Innovations Orchestra 2-disc set is really nice. I wish, for the compact disc issue, the original cover of City of Glass had been used. It's practically a Sun Ra cover!
-
I wish Jonathan (Horwich) could've kept International Phonograph going, but I'm very grateful for all the reissues he did gift to the listening community. The 2-disc Joe Daley set was going to be something else.

I don't know why exactly, but this morning the phrase Where were you when the Tiberi tapes were released? popped into my head. 😁 My next thought was: Acquisition Moratorium until September! (Unless Miles Davis's centennial in May brings about an unheard early 70's concert.🤪)

Been tweaking my LP playback a bit last night and this morning–different isolation feet on the phono preamp and adjusted the counterweight on the tone arm a bit. This LP sounds amazing today! John Coltrane “Crescent” LImited Edition Impulse LP reissue

Wow, it will be 46 degrees today. A heat wave! And . . . no snow. Watched seven deer walk across our back yard into our side yard and then across the road into the forest. They are active in the heat (29 degrees right now) and seemed happy, looking for food. I love my sylvan world. Starting off a listening session with the second disc from the last music I listened to yesterday . . . SFJazz Collective “Original Compositions and Works of Thelonious Monk” disc 2

Actually I meant "up to and including the Mellophonium band". I haven't nearly listened to all the Kenton recordings from that period, but the "Uncollected Vol. 6" on Hindsight, for example, is quite palatable to my ears.
-
Do agree with you for the 'Mellophonium band'. From this time on Stan lost me as a collector. Dont like that "muddy" sound.
-
So am I (at least for the period up to the Mellophonium orchestra) - but no real completist. I didn't know about this particular CD but have several other compilations that cover this period. So I am not quite sure how to judge this one in particular - in preference to others. But like I said, anyone who would like to explore this period should be served well with this compilation. In general I'd recommend having a look at the live recordings (from the Hollywood Palladium and Birdland) of that period too.
-
If it is smaller collector labels (that cater to niche segments within the niche market of jazz ) that are meant here, then I'd mention Sonorama and Be!Jazz as well.

Probably the submitter has only this one. I am a Kenton fan but have also this one among many other Items ;-]]
