Four Sounds Mystery Recording

16 posts in this topic

Jim has agreed, and shortly (I assume) he'll be adding a link to mp3 files of "Hot Bread" and "Inez" the two tunes recorded circa 1956 at Boddie Recording in Cleveland by

full_2174_p280787.jpg

Lonnie "The Sound" Walker, saxophone

Gene Harris, piano

Andy Simpkins, bass

Bill Dowdy, drums

This is the earliest known recording of the original members of the Three Sounds, and the only known recording of the original group, The Four Sounds.

Enjoy!

PS - the reason I offered the full tunes is, Michael Cuscuna's reaction to hearing them - he told me he would not include these in a Mosaic set, due to fidelity, questionable ownership and the fact that the sound is so different from the trio. So, Mosaic's loss is our gain!

Yikes! I should've mentioned that I am on-site, doing a job in Boca Raton right now (video production) and very busy!!! I'll try to get the files up by tonight.

Sorry.

I'd be willing to pass some dollars on to Ms. Harris for this. Top notch! :tup

Glad there's over a hundred page views, but no one else wants to comment on the tunes?

Important historically, but a little disappointing to have almost no piano.

The ballad particularly - so straight!

Thanks for making these available.

Thanks for sharing these, Dan. That "Hot House" lives up to its name! Pity these guys never made a record together, like "3 Sounds + 1" or something like that!

Dan, Allen and Jim,

Thanks for making this a reality. Those of us on this board are probably among a relatively select few who will ever hear this music.

Up over and out.
