  1. Digipaks are not cheaper than jewel boxes.
  2. I've met Oscar, and he is indeed an American Jazz Treasure. BUT when Monk was asked about the title of his song, he said it was picked up in Japan. Whenever someone asked a promoter what Monk wanted, the response was "Oska T", which Monk translated as "Ask Thelonious".
  3. Please notice Mike's "tap dance" for the French pronounciation. I buy it, though I have said Mar-shal for the first name, but I'm a language limited American.
  4. I used to be Richard M Jones, then I found out that's not cool. Then I became Mr. Walker with the same result. Then I was Clarence Williams, and H C Speir. Don Law, John Hammond, Irving Mills, Herman Lubinsky, Bob Weinstock and Orrin Keepnews were attempted later. I never tried Alfred Lion 'cause I thought people would see through that. Damn, there's a lot of hate and misunderstanding out there in the real world. If this message seems ambiguous, I succeeded.
  5. Thanks for posting this. I've been avoiding the national news for a week 'cause it drives me nuts. Wonderful to hear some good news.
  6. He led a nice session in 1930 with Hawk. It's in the first volume of Classics Hawkins series.
  7. John Litweiler's book "The Freedom Principle" is a reliable "walk thru the music". It still sends me to the "record player" to listen to stuff he writes about.
  8. Rhymes with "goose tuna"
  9. And I responded to P-rock.
  10. WRONG! The correct answer is: Organissimo "Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters" PKO 020 Quartet Out "Live at the Meat House" Musica Con Carne 002 Roscoe Mitchell "Snurdy McGurdy" nessa ncd-20 See lots of 2s and 0s above? That's because we all want "twenties" for the previous errors .
  11. and smarter.
  12. I have sweaters older than Pharaohrock.
  13. If all else fails, you could always buy it from one of the producers - MMMEEE!!! Hard to find, my ass. Now that I mention it, it is going away. Why don't old guys have butts?
  14. Jim, don't the titles just roll off your calculator?
  15. Free 'em?! Hell, I didn't even know they'd been arrested.
  16. The Encyclopedia of Popular music is also available online at the same website as Rise and Fall.
  17. Donald never wrote any liners for me, but he did do a short essay for the Japanese reissues on Bomba. Donald's earlier books include the Penguin Encyclopedia of Popular Music, a Sinatra bio called All or Nothing at All, and the wonderful Rise and Fall of Popular Music. The last named (a spectacular effort) can be read online - do a search on the title and you should find it. I've been trying to get Jim Sangrey to read it for some time, to no avail.
  18. Beware, Donald Clarke has been a close friend since 1970. His bio wins "hands down''. His prose is much more conversational, in fact I hear his voice as I read his stuff. Beyond that, I think this is one of the great jazz bios.
  19. It sounds like an Ornette tune. I've spent a lot of time searching through my recordings trying to find it. Thanks Mike.
  20. Mike, does it give other titles?
  21. I'm really surprised nobody commented on the info I gave about the unissued Lacy and Cherry dates. Maybe I'm better off WEA spurned my advances.
  22. I have a couple of tips for Roscoe Mitchell fans with composition pronounciation troubles. Nonaah, a composition and DB Critics Poll album of the year winner is a 3 syllable word - No Nay Ah. That album contains a composition called A1TAL2A. This is a combo of Roscoe's daughter's name (Atala) and the numbers 1 & 2 - say " A-1 Tall Toola. Atala Mitchell is the young lady on the cover of Snurdy McGurdy, indeed she IS Snurdy McGurdy. Understand the photo was taken in 1981 and she has grown into a stunningly beautiful dancer.
  23. I'm pretty much in agreement with Paul Secor, with one noted exception. I refuse to acknowledge someone named after "cruelty to animals".
  24. I've used the avatar option to SPAM.
  25. Plas Johnson.
