Zany Katie Couric - A Network News Anchor?
Randy Twizzle replied to RonF's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I know millions of people still watch those half hour network news broadcasts but I haven't seen a complete one in at least 10 years. To me they seem like quaint relics from the 60s, when people had to wait until 6.30 or 7 pm to find out what was happening in the world, (or what a handful of producers in NY and Washington decided that the viewers should know about) -
I once went to a bar in Foggy Bottom and saw Amiri Baraka, who was then teaching at GWU, sitting alone in a booth and writing in a notebook. Next to me at the bar were 3 semi-intoxicated Secret Service Agents. I knew they were Agents from listening to their conversation. It was 1979 and in those days I guess they were allowed to talk shop in public while sitting next to a shabby looking kid like me.

If you visit Washington in August, you'll be praying for those bracing cold winds. It's a hot and humid hellhole.

Beautiful? that's debateable I don't know. Maybe it's the Italian in me, but i find her to be scrumptious. Well the Italian may be in you, but according to her official website JamieLynnSigler.com she's ""Cuban, Jewish American, and Greek" and grew up on Long Island (big surprise there)

Sports: 2006 MLB Spring Training
Randy Twizzle replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
This has nothing to do with spring training 2006, but yesterday while taking a long walk I found this baseball card lying on the sidewalk It's a 1967 Ted Davidson card, probably part of some guy's childhood collection recently thrown in the trash. I had never heard of Davidson, so when I got home I looked up him and found that on March 11, 1967 he had one of the worst spring training days in history. -

Beautiful? that's debateable, but she's still a whiny NJ mafia princess and Finn might be better off dead than being ball and chained to her and her creepy family.

I understand that he really had slowed down during the last 125 years. -
I was brought up to never question the NY Times, but that was a long time ago. From a 3/19 metro section article about the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood:

There's an interesting story about that episode which you might or might not know about. This is from the Court TV website

There's probably no good reason to post this.

In 1956 you could pick up 3 new records in this alphabetized collection every week at Hinky Dinky Supermarkets. Impress your friends and neighbors; have the hippest bomb shelter in the neighborhood

Tony mentioned Artie Shaw while at Junior's house. I think he might enjoy "The Last Recordings"

They can be quite amusing. Here's an excerpt from a classic 1978 John Rockwell review.

U-M stations chief: I blew the whistle He says practices were suspicious March 7, 2006 BY MARYANNE GEORGE FREE PRESS ANN ARBOR BUREAU Donovan Reynolds said his resignation "is not tied to the criminal probe" and that the organization "needs a new start." The former director of the University of Michigan's public radio and TV stations said Monday he blew the whistle on suspicious business practices at the stations, spurring a criminal probe and internal investigation. Donovan Reynolds, who resigned Wednesday from his job as director of Michigan Public Media, said when he learned in November of "suspicious business practices," he reported it to U-M administrators and the U-M Department of Public Safety. "My resignation is not tied to the criminal probe," Reynolds said Monday. "I resigned because serious things occurred on my watch and I had to accept responsibility. ... The organization had gone through serious trauma, and I think it needs a new start." Reynolds would not give details about what he reported, and officials from U-M also refused to discuss the nature of the investigations. The news comes just weeks before the stations launch a major spring fund-raiser on March 31. The goal is $612,000. The stations are Michigan Radio, WUOM-FM (91.7) with affiliates in Flint and Grand Rapids, Michigan Television, WFUM-TV (Channel 28), and the Michigan Channel, a cable affiliate. Reynolds is at least the third person to leave Michigan Public Media since November. Justin Ebright, an eight-year employee and development director for Michigan Radio, left Nov. 14, according to U-M spokeswoman Julie Peterson. Jeremy Nordquist, an account executive for Michigan Public Media, left Jan. 25, Peterson said. She declined to comment on the circumstances of the departures. Neither Nordquist nor Ebright could be reached for comment Monday. Peterson said Reynolds voluntarily resigned and that he brought information to administrators that launched the internal probe, which is focusing mainly on Michigan Public Radio. Diane Brown, a spokeswoman for the U-M Department of Public Safety, declined to identify who called police, launching the criminal investigation. Reynolds came to Michigan Public Media in 1996 from Michigan Public Radio in East Lansing, where he was executive director. He created controversy when he changed the format of WUOM, the National Public Radio local affiliate, from classical music to news and talk, but the number of listeners and donations soared. Recent Arbitron ratings show WUOM is the most popular radio station in Ann Arbor. The station raised more than $923,000 during its fall fund-raiser. In addition to listener contributions, the station also received $508,000 last year from U-M, more than $486,000 from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and $1.3 million in cash, goods and services from businesses and organizations, according to U-M records.

Twins player Kirby Puckett passes away at 44
Randy Twizzle replied to HolyStitt's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
That was the one comical aspect of this was seeing his age listed as 44, 45, and 46. News organizations have obituaries ready to roll for most people near the age of 60 (or those whose lifestyle warrent an early write up. ) This one caught 'em and shows what lousy mathematicians journalists are. Well there's a reason they got it wrong. From the Star Tribune
