This is really something!!!!!! Great poster! You get Phineas AND Sun Ra. Where did you find it? I have found most of my stuff at the record shows in town. -

Now that you mention it, I remember sending that card into Sony when the set came out and never heard anything back! I assumed they never actually sent them out. Is it pretty nice? While working at the record store in the mid-90's,when WEA had their Atlantic Jazz Gallery series, I received posters for the Mingus, Roland Kirk, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman reissues. I still have them in my poster pile in the basement. -
I have been a vegetarian for almost 15 years now, but until I read "Fast-food Nation" I used to love McDonald's cones. Now that I know what they are made of I am too freaked out to eat them again! It probably is not any better, but I love the B.K. Veggie.

Those are pretty cool! I have tons of press photos, mainly of people I want to meet and have autograph for me. Here is the stuff I have framed in the house: a Miles Davis Fillmore poster from the early Seventies a large Mosaic Coltrane Blue Train era poster a large Mosaic Sonny Rollins Volume two era poster a Joe Henderson Verve press photo (it was taken around the time I first saw him in concert) a autographed press photo of Randy Weston a autographed press photo of James Moody a autographed press photo of Branford Marsalis a photograph of Hank Mobley with Lee Morgan and last, but not least: a John Lee Hooker photo from the early 1990's (it was taken around the time when I saw him in concert). -
I really dig the bassist Albert Stinson. The first recording I heard him on was the Impulse reissue of "Man From Two Worlds." I thought he had a nice thick sound and seemed really funky, but eventually thought he was even funkier on "The Dealer!" I didn't really know much about him other than that he seemed to have died very young. A few years back, I asked Charles Lloyd about Stinson at gig he was playing at the Dakota (a club in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area). He said that he remembered Stinson hanging out at gigs in the L.A. area and that he didn't seen him for a while, but he came back on the scene playing bass. He said that he was someone from the past that he really missed and that he was a great bassist to play with. Stinson doesn't seem to have cut many sides. The ones I have heard are: Chico Hamilton Drumfusion, Man From Two Worlds, and The Dealer Gabor Szabo Gypsy '66 John Handy Nice View Bobby Hutcherson Oblique Has anyone heard him with Larry Coryell on "Coryell"? or with Joe Pass on "Catch Me"? or on the Pacific Jazz Trio's on the Mosaic Select? or on any sessions I haven't mentioned?

Sports: 2006 MLB Spring Training
HolyStitt replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Nice spring training game from my Twins last night. Torii Hunter first pitch home run and Johan Santana only gave up one hit in 2 innings. -
If anyone has any questions feel free to PM me.

Thanks guys! It looks like I know one of the titles I will be adding to my CD order next week.

I had the same kind of experience, but it was with a Weston performance. After "Volcano Blues' came out, I flew to the San Francisco Jazz Festival to see a performance that had Randy Weston performing solo, in a trio, and with a big band. It was a great time, with from what I can remember, Hamiet Bluiett & Teddy Edwards in the group. There was a point in the evening when Weston had Melba Liston, who was backstage in her wheelchair, come on stage to receive credit for her arrangements/compositions, she received a standing ovation and seemed so touched by the applause.

Could you tell me which Milt session it is?

Thank you all the information and the photo. I just ordered Central Avenue Sounds.

I was able to see them with Belladonna only one time. It was on a tour with Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax, with the warm act Alice In Chains. I never really understood why they found a replacement for Belladonna.

The sound on 'Tune Up' and 'Dr. Jackle' is not perfect, but I think they are worth buying. If you can sit through the sound problems with most of Bird's live recordings, the sound problems on CDs shouldn't be that much of an issue. I really like these discs because it is great to hear Scotty Holt and Lamont Johnson performing with McLean on a variety of tunes that the group did not record in the studio. The only Jackie LP/CD I haven't been able to listen to is 'Monuments.' I have tried to listen to it for kitsch value, but even than it's too painful.

I thought no more "I am the Man"? Would have been a damn shame. Anybody know if Joey Belladonna was brought back on vocals?

I have quite a bit of experience. I have sold thousands of things and worked for a business doing it. Feel free to PM me.

Randy Weston Mosaic Select running low?
HolyStitt replied to HolyStitt's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Tanjah is really fun. I love how electic piano is used on "In Memory Of." I have the CTI LP Blue Moses, but cannot find it anymore. I remember it being very funky, but I cannot recall if that was a good thing or not! Dusty Groove has a Japanese 24 bit import I have debated picking up. Does anyone have any feedback on that title? Another nice Weston title that is out of print is African Cookbook, though Ray Copeland does the arrangements instead of Liston. -
When I played the DVD for a friend he had the same reaction. He seemed more impressed with the commercials than the music! I love the DVD, it's great to see the band perform. The appearance by Tina Brooks was just a huge bonus! Can anyone that has seen the DVD on the Atlantic box talk more about it?

It's from the early 1970's, but it is also very good. Quite a few great shots of Ray checking out religous monuments.

I love Melba Liston's work with Randy Weston, so I thought a thread should be started on her. Has anyone on the board heard the Metrojazz Melba Liston LP "And Her Bones"? I love Melba's work with Randy Weston and was wondering if anyone has heard her arranging for anyone other than Randy Weston.

Randy Weston Mosaic Select running low?
HolyStitt replied to HolyStitt's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
About meeting Randy, all I can suggest is being patient and waiting for the right moment. In Minneapolis, at the Dakota an Artist Quarter, the band members will hang out in the restaurant between sets and usually leave the club the same way the patrons do, so it's pretty easy to meet people. I have met Weston, James Moody, Roy Haynes, and Charles Lloyd that way. You may be right about Liston's contributions to the Ellingtonian elemements. I think that I can blur their contributions to the music together as one. -
Randy Weston Mosaic Select running low?

Sorry, Lon. At times, at can I get easily excited! I agree. I think he has a great sense of space and time in his music. It seems that he incorporated Ellington's ability to effectively use soloists in a big band setting, Monk use of space and time, and mixed it all together with his African Rhythms. I have spoken to a few jazz musicians and Weston was by far the nicest. I wanted to tell him how much his music has meant to me. He told me to sit down at his table with him and talk for a while. We talked about the performance in S.F. (how much it meant for Melba), Johnny Coles, Booker Ervin, and Min Xiao Fen (who performs on Khepera). He was a very kind and warm person. This is a side note: I used to be on the Blue Note Bulletin Board back in the day when it was around. What was their 'official' reason for dumping it? BTW: I am very happy Organissimo is a place that us old BNBB folks can meet. -

[quote name='jazzbo' date='Feb 24 2006, 03:32 PM' post='477283' As time goes by I get more and more a fan of Weston's work. . . . I think I have all the official and a lot of the unofficial recordings! Long may he reign! -
Randy Weston Mosaic Select running low?
HolyStitt replied to HolyStitt's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
'Uhuru/Africa' is a great, I have the Collector's Choice CD. This is one of the few Weston CDs/LPs I have never heard. I actually emailed Cuscuna in the late 1990's about putting out a Weston Mosaic. I am really excited about the 'Little Miles' and the 'Live at the Five Spot' material. I have only heard Melba Liston play trombone on some early Dexter Gordon sides from the 1940's. It should be interesting to compare the difference in her arrangements on this session to her other arrangements of these composoitions. The 'Five Spot' stuff looks interesting for Coleman Hawkins and Kenny Dorham playing with Weston. I should stop typing and start listening to this music!
