What live music are you going to see tonight?
HolyStitt replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I went to Etta James on Tuesday night. The band was very tight with a horn section. Has anyone seen her before? I was wondering if she always seems a little out of it. She would introduce tunes, forget which she was introducing, and have to ask the band what song it was. -
saw Roy at the Artist Quarter this past January. Great show, with a relaxed atmosphere. Before the first set, Roy sat at the bar and signed autographs. My favorite leader sessions are "We Three" and "Out of the Afternoon."

Man, have you been reading my mail! Seriously, I do the same thing.

This seller drives me nuts. Last year, I ordered a rare J.B. Lenoir CD from this guy, waited a month and half without seeing or hearing anything. I email him and he says that it is out of print and refunds my money. A month ago, I see he has tons of hard to find Classics CDs up for sale, so I email him and ask if they are in stock. He actually replied that they do not know what is in stock until people buy the CD!

I know what your saying, it's crazy! IMHO, it's even harder to deal with because he stocks so many great titles. Right now, it looks like I am in the same position as you, but with this seller named moviemarz. I ordered 6 CDs from him and he hasn't responded to any of my emails. He has a 98% feedback and I have had good luck with him in the past, but I have a bad feeling this time because most of the CDs were hard to find Solal CDs.
-
It's funny the seller is CDHUT. I have been eyeing some titles this seller has up right now: 2 Marsh titles, 2 Misha Mengelberg titles, and a couple of Martial Solal titles. I emailed the seller with a question and received a response pretty quickly, but I still had a weird feeling. Last week, at the Ray Davies concert, I asked a friend of mine if he had ordred from the seller. He told me he had done it a few times, but had problems with him not sending titles right away, sometimes sending the wrong CD, and not responding to emails.

I think his seller is someone other than Nerdz. The funniest thing about my whole ordeal with Nerdz was that after 2 months of hassles they wouldn't even reply to any inquiries from paypal about the status of the order. 2 weeks wouldn't bother me either, but in this case I would be mad because of the statement that the CDs were on order.
-
The seller I had problems with was Nerdz, who is not on ebay any longer.

I had a seller like this too. It drives you crazy because you know your stuff is just sitting there while they post more stuff. In my case, I was lucky because my CDs came, where some people were stiffed.

I have dealt with this BS too. Did the auction say anything in the fine print about CDs could take up to a month? I ordered a ton of the Classics CDs from a seller on ebay and he had the disclaimer in the auction, so I had to wait a month to file something with PayPal. After the month, he claimed to PayPal that he had sent them, so I had to wait a additional month to prove he hadn't. Who is the seller?

I bought it the first day it came out, but have only played it once. I thought the CD started great and then went nowhere. Maybe my expectations are too high from the run of albums he had up to the mid-nineties, but to me, he used to bat in the .700 or better range and now it seems he is stuck somewhere in the minor leagues.

"Hot Jazz on Blue Note" 4-CD set released in 1996
HolyStitt replied to Bol's topic in Recommendations
Yes!! I really love the music on this set. The only negative is that all the discs in my set suffered from disc rot. -
Thank you for the heads up. I just made an order that includes the Solal CD, with Plays Ellington and the Sidney Bechet/Martial Solal Quartet with Kenny Clarke on Vogue.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
HolyStitt replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I am also spinning this set. It wasn't my first set (Mingus Candid), but I remember buying it and telling EVERYONE I ran into that they had to buy it. -
My first exposure to Jackie McLean was while working at a record store. I heard "4, 5, and 6" and "New Soil," but I was completely hooked after buying the Mosaic set. I love how in the 1960's, Jackie McLean moved between a bop sound with elements of the New Thing added. Man, what a sound he had! I never had the chance to see him perform. My buddy flew out to N.Y. and asked Jackie about it at a gig. He said for some reason nobody wanted to book him in the area. Has anyone seen the documentary of him teaching in the 1970's?

I think this is a great idea. Can someone tell me how to do it? First, find an image of the Jackie cover you want to display. If it is online(AMG is the best source), right click on the image and choose properties. Copy the URL of the image by highlighting it and holding down 'control' + 'c'. Click "My Controls" at the top of the page. Click "edit Avatar Settings" on the left. Go to the box for "Enter a URL to an online avatar image" Hit 'control' + 'v' to paste the URL of your Jackie cover. Click update Avatar. If you have the image you want to use on your hard drive, you can upload it, but that gets complicated as there are size restrictions on uploads. Thank you!

Almost made a mistake with this one. I was looking through a Goldmine catalog ten years ago and I thought "weird, Don Cherry sings ballads, I never would have guessed!" Luckily, someone explained a thing or two before I had the money order sent out. Too bad someone didn't stop me before I special ordered the William Parker CD on New World. I was so pissed to find out there was another William Parker!

I took it as a moment of self confidence because he expected Tony to die.

Great photo! Must be from last night? Th first time I went to the Velvet Lounge was a few years ago, a Saturday night with an open jam session that coincided with Ernest Dawkins performing, after coming back from a trip to Africa. The next afternoon, I went to the DuSable Museum to see Fred Anderson in a tenors show with Jarman and Wilkerson.

Warner Music to Acquire Ryko, Gaining Labels and Song Library
HolyStitt replied to 7/4's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Maybe I am wrong, but I don't believe Ryko actually owns the Zappa catalog. I believe the Zappa Estate owns the masters and licenses them to Ryko for a determined period. I am not too surprised by this move. Ryko used to be located in the Minneapolis area and locally there is a whole industry of people discussing the companies stupid business moves. My favorite is that they left some of the master tapes behind (which were eventually moved to the dumpsters!) when they moved to the East Coast. I know people that recovered master tapes, very rare promotional material, unmarked boxes of catalog, and insider documents in their dumpster. -
I thought that was interesting. They also said that he played twice a week in Bakersfield all the way up to this death. It's sad that the only things the press seems to mention are the Hee Haw and Beatles connections.

Hey sheldon, Have you ever consigned photos at the Jazz Record Mart?
