To respond to Peter Friedman: I agree, to a point (and support the view that Guy presents). But there are numerous instances in Kenny Barron's use of the electric piano where he is NOT substituting it for an acoustic piano. I am thinking particularly about his Muse records and his album "Innocence." The electric piano is a color that is *different* from the acoustic piano and the pieces on which he uses this color were specifically intended to have that. At this point, electric pianos are no longer produced and haven't been for perhaps 2 decades. Electronic instruments have replaced them and anything that sounds "closer to the sound of an acoustic instrument" is most likely using digital sampling technology. The other technology being used is software modeling - which isn't being used so much for acoustic piano imitations as it is for electric piano imitations. Mike

I go with September 1, 1957 on Sonny's Crib. That is what 2nd edition of Cuscuna/Ruppli gives. September 1, 1957 was a Sunday, which was generally Blue Note's day of the week at Van Gelder's. October 9, 1957 was a Wednesday. Here is information on Grant Green's Blue Note sessions: Date: October 27, 1961 Location: Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, NJ Label: Blue Note Grant Green (ldr), Grant Green (g), Sonny Clark (p), Butch Warren (b), Billy Higgins (d) a. tk 4 Woody 'n You - 05:54 (Dizzy Gillespie) Blue Note CD: 7243 5 27548 2 3 - First Session (2001) b. tk 7 Woody 'n You - 05:53 (Dizzy Gillespie) Blue Note CD: 7243 5 27548 2 3 - First Session (2001) c. Where will be Mosaic be in 20 years?
Michael Fitzgerald replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
And now that people freely distribute CDR sets of out-of-print Mosaics, I would imagine that a chunk of the market would be gone for any kind of reprint (not that I think a reprint is at all likely to begin with). Mike -
Do a Mosaic and have the bumper sticker say, "I have the Complete 1959-63 West Coast Studio Sessions of Dupree Bolton". Mike

If you were a jazz scholar researching an artists
Michael Fitzgerald replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
This wasn't even a case of trying to dig deeper or get dirt or whatever. It was just a simple statement of fact. No one was making judgments or pointing fingers. But it's gone now in respect for her wishes. In the Gryce book there are a number of personal things that are less than complimentary, and we never tried to say that Gigi was the greatest saxophonist or composer in the history of jazz - but we felt, and still do, that his is a story worth telling. Which is all one can want, in my view. Mike -
If you were a jazz scholar researching an artists
Michael Fitzgerald replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
True. My friend Noal Cohen has done Hope's discography and was chastised by Bertha for mentioning (in a brief biographical sketch) elements of Hope's biography that basically everyone already knows. Apparently truth is out and rose-colored-glasses are in. Mike -
If you were a jazz scholar researching an artists
Michael Fitzgerald replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I won't answer in the hypothetical - I choose a lot of the subjects I have because no one else has ever bothered to devote that kind of attention to them. With others, I have a personal connection - they are friends, teachers, etc. Obviously, a deep, longstanding love of an artist's music is going to be a factor for such a choice. Actually maybe I shouldn't say "obviously" because there do seem to be some people who crank out superficial studies since they haven't put in the time. Almost like they were given an assignment and a deadline. Maybe they were. In the research world, it's wonderful to find a collaborator - someone who shares the same passion for the same subject. I've had the pleasure of working with a number of great people and am always looking for more. Especially because it's easier when you can share the load. Mike -

What does "for an artists" mean? Do you mean why would a researcher choose one particular musician to study; why pick that specific musician? Mike -
When did Walter Bishop JR join Blakey's band?
Michael Fitzgerald replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Artists
Those tapes are from November 1959, not June. The band was in Dusseldorf. Mike -
When did Walter Bishop JR join Blakey's band?
Michael Fitzgerald replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Artists
You have confused Walter Bishop, Jr. with Walter Davis, Jr. - in 1959 it was Davis, who played with the band on and off in 1959-61 and then in the 1970s. But June 1959 is too early for Walter Davis, Jr. in the band, I think. Please give details of the item and I will check further. Mike -
Some solos. It's a 1945 big band. No one gets a ton of space. Mike
-
No, there's Dupree Bolton to be heard with Benny Carter's big band in the mid 1940s and some Buddy Johnson from slightly earlier. I was just listening to one of the Buddy Johnson live things the other day. Mike

I thought it was Ampex 456 that was the diabolus-in-musica. Mike

Not so fast. As Dave Letterman used to say, in his "brush with greatness" segments: "Is there perhaps.....MORE to this story?" Why, yes, Dave, there is. A few days later, when I received the CD package and opened it, an odd smell permeated the air and I was horrified to find it was actually....." Prestige studio sessions 1965-70
Michael Fitzgerald replied to Michael Fitzgerald's topic in Discography
Please, when I ask a question do NOT give me an answer based on information from the Japanese jazzdisco.org site - particularly without crediting the source. That site is packed with errors and I'm trying to FIX those. That site copies errors and introduces new ones of its own. It's wrong so much that even when it's right I'm cautious. As for RVG in New York, it needs to be understood that discographies and other sources have in the past equated "NYC" with "the New York metropolitan area" - so it's difficult to tell sometimes. Another reason why I'm asking these questions. BTW, RVG certainly did do some location recording after the 1960s, the 1986 Uptown album of Tommy Flanagan at the Village Vanguard comes to mind immediately. Mike -
Where will be Mosaic be in 20 years?
Michael Fitzgerald replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yes, but that's Sonny Rollins of 4 years ago being issued by the label to which he was signed then (and now), a label that has 30-some years of history with him. Mosaic doesn't have such a position - with anyone. The Benedetti stuff is the only thing they actually own. I don't know the ins and outs of that particular deal. Mike -

Not according to Cuscuna, who told me unissued live stuff is generally too much trouble for them in terms of all the clearances and payouts needed. Mike -

Well, if that's the case, they just moved down another notch in my book, though not at all unexpectedly - that's the feel I have about that whole production. Isn't this just shilling? Or is it a new twist on payola? I guess you would need to *purchase* some "free speech" on that board, Chuck. What would happen then? Mike
