  1. I just went shopping! I placed an order for 10 discs. Most of them OOP.... or I guess as we should start calling them (WNBIPAITU = will never be in print again in the USA) I'll post here as soon as they arrive.
  2. OK, add two more to the list of potentials: The Complete Columbia J.J. Johnson Small Group Sessions (#169) I have The Eminent Vols. 1 & 2 do I really need that much more JJ? The Complete Small Group Johnny Hodges Verve Sessions 1956-61 (#200) Lots of superlatives in the reviews on the Mosaic site... Can such high praise be taken at face value? <RANT> I really wish there were samples for all of the mosaic sets....they wouldn't even have to be full songs, 30 sec. clips would be nice. And of course the very nature of the mosaic sets means most of the music is not readily available elsewhere at least not anywhere that would have samples. </RANT>
  3. For those of you who are familiar with this set, does Miles play mostly muted or are there some open horn tracks in there?
  4. Looks like the font runner is easily Turrentine. Thanks for the comments.
  5. The piggy bank is full and it's time to go Mosaic shopping again! I'd like to get some comments and recommnedations about the following sets (in no particular order): The Complete Blue Note Elvin Jones Sessions (#195) how representative are the 3 sample tracks.... yeah, I know only 3 sample tracks and 8 discs.... does a lot of the material devolve into drum fests? I really like the first sample, "For All The Other Times" How does the live material sound? The Complete Roost Sonny Stitt Studio Sessions (#208) whew 9 discs! will I get bored? There are a lot of tracks right around the 3 minute mark. Does Sonny ever get a chance to stretch out and solo? The Blue Note Stanley Turrentine Quintet/Sextet Sessions (MD5-212) Was Stanley much of a composer? I don't see his name on many of the tunes. I see a lot of standards. Does he bring something of his own to the familiar tunes? Thanks! I look forward to your comments and suggestions.
  6. I too have both and am more than happy with the sound quality on the Mosaics. I can't comment on comparing to JVRG or TOCJ as requested, but the Mosaic version stands up well against the recent RVG of "Byrd In Hand".
  7. nice one RT, better cut back on the Duff
  8. Where do you buy your JRVGs?
  9. I have to admit I'm not familiar with this set. I have the Complete Plugged Nickel box. How does the Blackhawk compare. Is it similar? Recommended?
  10. How many versions of 'Round Midnight do you have? Which one(s) do you like the most? What are some of the more interesting versions? I was surprised to find that I had close to 20 different versions. I think my favorite...at least right now is on Monk's, At The Blackhawk. Grant Green's Green Street and Lee Kontiz's Alone Together provide some nice variations. Kenny Dorham and of course Miles Davis (arr. Gil Evans) are right up there. Interesting are the 20 minutes of a work in progress on Thelonious Himself.
  11. Any comments on Lee Morgan's "The Procrastinator"? I've considered picking this one up, but I keep putting it off.......
  12. I picked the Carmell Jones not too long after it came out. I really like this set. Trumpet is probably my favorite jazz instrument. Before visiting the Mosaic site I hadn't really heard of Jones. Although he was right under my nose on Silver's "Song for my father". I like the first two discs the best. The 3rd disc of folk songs is interesting though. After living with the set for a while, I began to explore some of the sidemen and the arranger, Gerald Wilson. I wound up buying the Wilson mosaic too. If you're only familiar with Brown, Byrd, Davis, Dorham, Mitchell, Morgan, etc. You owe it to yourself to add Carmell Jones to the list.
  13. I bought the Carmell Jones mosaic select earlier and began reading up on the sidemen and the arranger - which lead me to the Gerald Wilson mosaic. I just got it today (2537/2500). I made a quick run through all 5 discs at work today. I can't wait to get further into this set. I can already tell its going to be a favorite. I really didn't mind the popular music towards the end of the set. I wasn't to crazy about the one vocal track. For whatever reason the vocalist reminded me of Geoffrey Holder (the "uncola", "Ha Ha Ha" guy from the 7up commercials of the mid to late 70's, and Live and Let Die). Once again, I get another great set of music, that I would have never considered had I not read threads like this one from my fellow board members. Thanks!
