jazzshrink: thanks for the tip. called them up this morning and they were more than happy to help. I like supporting local shops like this. I only wish we had more like it in my neck of the woods. I also liked the fact that I said I was looking for the Julius Watkins Sextets, and the nice gentleman said, "Oh yeah, the 10" series." The knowledgeable salesperson....I thought these were all but extinct...

I'm looking for Julius Watkins – Julius Watkins Sextet Vols. 1 & 2 It ranked at the top of this poll so there may not be anyone who wants to part with it, but if anyone could let me know where to find this or wants to sell, let me know. Thanks.

Around the world in 80 minutes

JohnS: any details about that one? Didn't see it available anywhere, OOP? Do you have a track listing? -
I had an idea to create a mix CD with songs that mention various places around the globe. Ordinarily I spend days obessing over mixes, but to get the ball rolling, I thought I would throw one out. A Night In Tunisia - Art Blakey - 9.50 - (A Night At Birdland - Volume 1) Appointment In Ghana - Jackie McLean - 6.95 - (Jackie's Bag) April In Paris - Coleman Hawkins - 3.10 - (Body & Soul) Autumn In New York - Bud Powell - 2.85 - (The Amazing Bud Powell - Volume 2) Basra - Pete La Roca - 9.92 - (Basra) Calcutta Cutie - Horace Silver - 8.43 - (Song For My Father) Dear Old Stockholm - Miles Davis - 4.17 - (Round About Midnight) Home Is Africa - Horace Parlan - 8.77 - (The Complete Blue Note Sessions) Israel - Miles Davis - 2.25 - (Birth Of The Cool) Monaco - Kenny Dorham - 5.55 - (Round About Midnight At The Cafe Bohemia) New Orleans - Carmell Jones - 5.73 - (Mosaic Select) Rio - Lee Morgan - 6.17 - (The Procrastinator) St. Thomas - Sonny Rollins - 6.77 - (Saxophone Collossus) I'd be interested in hearing some other suggestions for tracks to include. I've come up with a few others already: Angola - Wayne Shorter Black Nile - Wayne Shorter Blue Harlem - The Ike Quebec Quintet Bluebird Of Delhi (Mynah) - Duke Ellington California Soul - Gerald Wilson Caracas - Lou Donaldson Carribean Cutie (Alternate Bonus Track) - Cannonball Adderley Chelsea Bridge - Tommy Flanagan Congolese Children - Randy Weston Francisco - Jackie McLean Isfahan - Duke Ellington Japanese Folk Song [Kojo No Tsuki] - Thelonious Monk Man Of Lamancha - Gerald Wilson Mount Harissa - Duke Ellington Nagasaki - The Poll Winners New Amsterdam - ScoLoHoFo Niger Mambo - Randy Weston On The Ginza - Art Blakey On The Nile - Jackie McLean Port Rico Rock - Blue Mitchell Russian Lullaby - John Coltrane Sao Paolo - Kenny Dorham Scrapple From The Apple - Frank Morgan Stars Fell On Alabama - Sonny Stitt Sunrise In Mexico - Kenny Dorham Sweet Georgia Brown - Dizzy Gillespie The Egyptian - Art Blakey The Maids Of Cadiz - Miles Davis The Tokyo Blues - Horace Silver West 22nd Street Theme - Bobby Hutcherson West Indian Daddy - Lou Donaldson

Yeah, I know the feeling Rooster Ties. It's like just stepping out of a really hot shower, but you already have your clothes on. ICK!

The folks from Austin, Kansas City, and St. Louis forgot to mention the HUMIDITY. People out in the desert talk about their high temps, but the air is dry as a bone. Last week in Tulsa the temps were over 100 and the humidity was in the 60% range. Like Robin Williams said in Good Morning Vietnam - It's hot and wet...that's fine if you're with a lady, but it sucks if you're in the jungle!

Sorry to hear that Ghost of Miles. I hate it when that happens, especially when a replacement is on the shelves. Speaking of Grantstand... Is the organ sound on track 1 @ 0:47-0:49 & again @ 1:17 - 1:19 the same/better/worse than on previous versions. I was listening on my office system, but it was jarring enough for me to run it back and see if it was a disc skip or something in the mix. I didn't notice any other "problems" throughout the rest of the disc.

Looking at the Blue Note RVG page it appears all of the RVGs are on sale there. $8.98 for singles and $19.98 for doubles.

Is Stanley Turrentine's Blue Hour: The Complete Session in the RVG or Connoisseur series? I thought Connoisseur (here) But then I saw this

Again, I find myself agreeing with Soul Stream. I'll take it one step further. Everything should be open 24 hours a day. Full employment for everyone! I just opened my CDUniverse package with all 6 of the 8/5 releases....yeah, I know, another copy of Blue Train.... I'm playing them alphabetically, this is quickly becomming one of my favorite Blakeys. Very nice.

The best 22-second tune you've (n)ever heard!!!!&#

Rooster, are you sure the sheet music didn't just fall to the floor and the musician continued to play I have to admit I'm not all that familiar with RRK, but based on the other sound clips I may have to check this one out. -
I Just Saw "Solaris" (2003)

I'd have to agree with Soul Stream on this one. I came close to walking out on this one. It just seemed like a hollow shell of a movie. Nothing in it really made me care for the characters. -
The Washington Post's Style Invitational once again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition. Here are this year's winners: 1. Intaxication: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with. 2. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly. 3. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future. 4. Foreploy: Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting laid. 5. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period. 6. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high. 7. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it. 8. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late. 9. Hipatitis: Terminal coolness. 10. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.) 11. Karmageddon: It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer. 12. Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you. 13. Glibido: All talk and no action. 14. Dopeler effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly. 15. Arachnoleptic fit (n.): The frantic dance performed just after you've accidentally walked through a spider web. 16. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out. 17. Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a grub in the fruit you're eating. 18. Ignoranus: A person who's both stupid and an asshole.

I would caution against making decision based on the commerical-free nature of Sirius. There is still a bit of static financially for both XM and Sirius with Sirius a bit worse off. I guarantee the first place Sirius looks for additional revenue will be commericials. I've looked on the Sirius website but cannot find any promises to remain commerical free.

I love watching threads like this. People arguing, trying to convince others to change their opinions. I see argument as a tool for one party to have another party UNDERSTAND their position rather than adopt it. And this can usually be accomplished in one MB page or so, and yet threads like this go on and on. It is absolutely entertaining!! And if I'm not careful, I just might learn something. (where's that from....the brain scan pulls up the Fat Albert cartoon, but I'm not sure)

Claude: I compared the SACD to the most recent remastering of KoB. And I did notice an improvement in sound on the stereo layer. Not earth shattering, but it did sound more natural too me. I REALLY liked the multichannel layer though. Of course it then becomes an apples-to-oranges comparison. I just felt like I was right there in the studio with the multichannel mix.

I'll add another vote for "The Hawk Relaxes." Definitely worth checking out.

But Beautiful
mgraham333 replied to chris's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Well I finished this last week and just remembered to come back to this thread. I really enjoyed this book. As I mentioned before, I don't really enjoying reading for pleasure any more. But this book was worth my time. The short stories are all a bit depressing. Too few of our jazz giants had happy endings. But there are enough light moments to keep it from being a Lifetime-movie-of-the-week-tear-jerker. I too will check out some of Dyer's other work. He has good visual style of writing. -
I put in my vote for the Pres. I really dig all of 'em but I was recently listening to some Lester Young while reading the short story in the book "But Beautiful" by Geoffrey Dyer and it really got to me.

Seriously, if you could only have one CD/LP
mgraham333 replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
If I could only have one CD for the rest of my life, it would have to be a recording of James Earl Jones reading a list of 1001 ways to kill yourself with items commonly found on a desert island. -
I guess it all depends on the teacher. I took four years of Latin in high school and learned more about writing, culture, history, and life in general than in all of my other courses combined.

OK, I will try to make this my one and only time I gush about SACD.... I just took the plunge and bought the Denon DVD-2900 universal player (note: this player uses separate circuitry for SACD). I also fell victim to buying yet another version if Kind of Blue. Listening to this SACD I felt as if I was finally hearing the music rather than a recording of the music. WOW! Unbelievably life-like. The cymbals sounded like cymbals, very metallic. The horns were also incredible, very crisp. The multi-channel layer was my favorite although the stero layer was also much improved. I also listened to The Police: Syncronicity. Again, the music had a whole new feel. There were sounds coming at me that I never knew were there before. I've got a modest system: Denon AVR-3000 receiver Denon DVD-2900 player Klipsch Synergy Speakers (front, center, surround, sub) To my ears SACD is well worth the investment.
