  1. Deep, I posted this one a couple of weeks ago in Drumnmers Corner.. Do you know this club in Munich? According to pianist Johnny O'Neal, Art Blakey had some stories about this place too.. I played a jazz club back in October, '76 in Munich, Germany called the Jazz Domicile. The club owner (Arnst was his name) got really tanked up and came up onstage to sing some or some such nonsense, tripped over the mic cord and fell backwards, trashing the face and bridge on a half size Czech bass, and took down almost my whole drumkit! It was the ugliest sounds I've ever heard!! Arnst was profusely apologetic after it happened and offered to pay for our rooms and any damaged incurred... The next day he didn't remember any of the night before and flatly refused to pay for anything! The bass player took the matter into some kind of International Court and I don't think he ever got re-imbursed for the extensive repairs he had to have done....
  2. I've got an "Anita O'Day at Baker's Keyboard Lounge" story for ya In the early 80's she was in Detroit at Baker's for week. My mother being a big fan of Anita's, I thought I'd ask her for an autograph. So I went to the bar and got a napkin and an ink pen and walked over to her... She looked at the napkin and then at me and said, " MAN, I AIN'T AUTOGRAPHIN' NO MUTHAFUCKIN' NAPKIN!,,,GO GET A RESPECTABLE PIECE OF PAPER! "..
  3. Wow! You were the drummer on that gig! I know Claude Black very well and remember when that happened. Around that time I had just picked up an Eddie Jefferson side with a really hip version of "Freedom Jazz Dance" on it and was going to come down that week to Bakers..
  4. Deepness, I'd like to hear more crazy road stories from your own experiences...
  5. Good morning Sir Deep; I'm on my way to a gig north of Traverse City, Mi for a warm & fuzzy little Jazz hit at a cozy resort about 3 hours north of my crib... Have a nice weekend and I'll check in again late Sunday night ..
  6. Reminds me.... I gotta stop and eat on my way to tonight's gig... That food looks good!! I better git movin'... Later ya'll B)
  7. RANDALL, Can't do it man. It's too dangerous out there. I'm a marked man. I'm the fugitive...THE RICHARD KIMBALL OF JAZZ!! I am forced to dwell in THE DEEP DEPTHS OF DISPAIR thread until such time as the DEEP IGNORE option is implemented. If DEEP can't go to the mountain, the mountain has to come to DEEP. DEEP That's deep!
  8. Here's an idea... This thread should be renamed something like,, "Deep's World",, or maybe even start another thread .. Anyone wanting to interact with Sir. Deepness could simply go to this thread or ignore it... Deep of course could visit and interact with other threads like "Drummer's Corner" (hint hint)
  9. Randall, This has plagued me my entire recording career. (Not that my recording career has been that prolific). On the Maynard Ferguson "Chameleon" album I got murdered by the sandbag on the bass drum. The Woody 40th Anniversay Carnegie Hall Concert was OK but it was live. I finally asked Mel Lewis how he dealt with his bass drum. He told me to use NO muffling on the front head and only take a paper napkin, folded up, and tape it on the back head next to where the bass drum beater strikes the head. I think he knew what he was talking about. Of course this is for a Jazz sound. Rock is another ball game. SsssSSSHHHHHHH I hear toilets flushing. DEEP Sir. Deepness, Thanks for info..
  10. He has an amazing poly-rhythmic independance that goes beyond anyone I've heard before.. Check out the nutty patterns he plays with his heel and toe on hihat & cowbell! And he swings like DeJohnette!
  11. WORD!!!! I'd really like to see some more participation from you, DEEP, in other areas of the board, especially in some heavy MUSIC threads. You obviously have a lot to offer, and I'm warming to some of your charm (SERIOUSLY!!). BUT, as it stands now, a frightingly large percentage of your posts on this board are just PISSING IN THE PUNCH BOWL. (And most of it is directed at Chris, it would seem.) Grow the fuck up a bit, and get with the PARTY. (And quit being such a party pooper. ) Right on.. I even started a "Drummer's Corner" which Sir Deepness hasn't responded much to.. "How does Deep tune and muffle his bass drum? I guess I'll never know..
  12. And I'm supposed to follow your website?? Sheeesh! DIG THAT! :

  17. We'd love to! Do you know of any gigs?? We'd also like to get into Chicago..
  18. I watched a DVD of Pat Metheny's most recent tour.. This kid he's got on drums, Tony Sanchez is UNREAL! Anybody know anything about him? Where did he get all that musicality and magic from? I hear a lot of Jack DeJohnette in his approach as well as some very deep latin roots.. Also, I wonder if some of the cymbals belong to Pat??.. I've heard somewhere that Pat has a collection of cymbals he specifically likes to hear when in performance. Is this myth or fact?
  19. I'm the good loking one. Can't you tell? LDB The other guy is my COnquistador pal in El Fuerte, Sinaloa, Mexico. Senor HOP Well Clit, why in hell didn't you take your hat off and offer it to the "toilet seat" head on the right?? DEEP Speaking of toilet seats,,, this thread has become a "time toilet" ,, damn! I gotta get offline and get some schit done!!!
  20. CLIT, CLASP !! I'll be sending you the latest Big Band Bloviation CD as soon as it's finished so you handle Chuk Niles at KLON please. You're gonna dig this one. BTW: Are you on the left or right in your Avatar?? LDB (Little Drummer Boy) / DEEP Randy Marsh, 4825 Chauncey, Belmont, MI. 49306 (hint hint)
  21. At the suggestion of one of our members, I will be posting all of our upcoming calendar events for all to easily see... Dec 11th, 9:00pm to 12:00am we're at New Holland Brew Pub, Holland, Mi. This is a fairly new room for us and a challenging one. The acoustics aren't the most favorable and the venue doesn't make any effort to advertise the music. In spite of that, we do get a few listeners once in awhile and the beer and the food's fairly good. We may just try our Zappa tunes out there.. B) Dec 18th, 9:00pm to 1:00am, we'll be celebrating the 2nd annual Organissimo Christmas Party at Billy's Lounge, Grand Rapids, Mi. (for details go to home site- calendar events).. We will be featuring tenor sax man John Gist and this event will be combined with WGVU's Jazz Nite. The 9:00pm set will be broadcasted live @ 88.5 in West Michigan.. Every Tuesday in January, we'll be jammin' at Founders Brew Pub, Grand Rapids, Mi. from 9:00pm to 1:00am. They have great beers there and we have a loyal following, and I'm sure we'll be seeing the Boogaloo Sisters occasionally in the house! If we do well in January, they will extend us into February and beyond.. Feb 6th, we will be at the Firefly in Ann Arbor, Mi. 9:00 - 1:00am.. We'll be making our big debut there.. It's a great place to play and it's a real jazz club!
  22. Thanks for the link... I'll check it out...
  23. I'm interested in drumset method books or methods any of you may have developed, particularly for students making the transition from practice pad to drum kit.. I've been using the Jim Chapin book, Ted Reed's Syncopation, and the Alfred's drumset book.. Other suggestions? I welcome other concepts and approaches to teaching, so as to better instruct young and aspiring drummers...
