    ECM Records

I think this is what pulled me into the ECM records back in the 70's. I right away, liked the clarity of colors and textures of the drum mix, especially the cymbals.. The drummers like DeJohnette, Christenson, and Gottlieb based a lot of their concept around the cymbals more than the drums. The first album I heard was Eberhard Weber's "Yellow Fields" and that ride cymbal mix knocked me out! Other ECM favorites of mine are the Jon Hammer album, "Timeless", Keith Jarett's albums "My Song" & "Belonging". In my opinion Manfred Eicher brought a refreshing and welcome new sound to the "Jazz table".
  2. " Go Ben go!!! I've never been decribed before with such verve!
  3. I listened to Ammons but I also listened to Wardell Gray and Don Byas just to name a couple of great tenor players that don't get mentioned enough. Arno Marsh (Old time tenor player)
  4. I don't know... I think you have to be in that late teens or early 20's age demographic to know what songs the parodies are... Even without knowing, the tunes are extremely funny and clever.
  5. ...I saw AL TV last night on VH1 and he does faked interviews with Brittany Spears and EMINEM.. The one with EMINEM is particularly funny
  6. I believe this is the proves we have a strong CD! Jim Wilke has been playing the Cd now since the first week of March! How to read these music lists... The program is broadcast live on Friday and Saturday nights starting at Midnight Eastern Time. Thus, Friday Midnight is the start of Saturday morning, and Saturday Midnight is Sunday morning. Each hour is identified - eg. SA 0 (Saturday midnight), SA 1 (Saturday 1 AM) and so on. If you are in Central Time subtract 1 hour, in Mountain Time subtract 2 hours, in Pacific Time subtract 3 hours. There is also a piece listed in parenthesis at the end of each hour. This is an unannounced 40-sec fill segment that is not heard on all stations. 7. Weird Al has outdone himself! Great parodies!! I think Weird Al is the new 'Music Satire Potentate" .. I believe he has taken Frank Zappa's place. In fact, Dweezil Zappa plays on a tune that is very Zappa-esgue.. Do yourself a favor. Either buy "Poodle Hat" or catch him on his Summer tour in a venue near you..
  8. I heard the new Steve Winwood album for the first time tonight. I really like it! The album grooves with funky guitar, and lots of latin percussion... And Winwood is still singing great and played all the tracks on a Hammond B3! Some of the writing reminds me a little of his earlier albums with Traffic... It's definately a worthwhile Cd
  9. Pepe, Thanks for the info and your time. Right now we are trying to find a bigger label, management, bookings, and a good distribution deal for our Cd. We have a jazz festival booking in Clearwater Florida Oct 18th and are going to try and book venues there and back as well as possible gigs in the Tampa Bay area. If you have any numbers you could pass on we'd sure appreciate it. In fact if anyone reading this post has any ideas we'd love to hear from you....
  10. Pepe, Are you involved now with festival promoting? Organissimo is trying to hook up with as many festival venues as possible for next Summer. if you can help in any way it would be much appreciated.
  11. Jessica Williams is weird but a genius... I had the opportunity to work 2 nights with her at Yoshi's when I lived in Oakland, Ca in 1987.. Often if there was any distraction going on with the audience she would stop playing and walk to the edge of the stage and just stand there staring at the people making the noise... This happened the first night I played with her. It was one of the most challenging gigs of my career!
  12. If anybody is in or near Michigan and is interested in hearing us at one of our shows here's the schedule. We will be featuring jazz vocalist Harvey Thompson and my father, tenor sax man Arno Marsh... Thu 7 till 9:00pm Rotary Pavilion, Downtown Cadillac - "Upbeat Cadillac", Fri 7 till 9:00pm Rambadt Park, Reed City 1/2 mile E of 131 & US 10 - "Crossroads Picnic Showcase" Sat 7 till 9:00pm Wenger Pavilion, Baldwin - "Sounds from the Forest" Sun 2 till 4:00pm Waterfront Park, Ludington - "WestShore WaterFront ShowCase" 7 till 11:00pm Gull Landing, Downtown Pentwater - "We’ve Got the Sunday Blues & All That Jazz" Mon 7 till 9:15pm Waterfront Stadium-Grand Haven - "Stompin at the Stadium" Rainsite @ Grand Haven Community Center All venues and times are the same for this ten week series
  13. Check this out... My father, tenor sax man Arno Marsh recorded and toured with Woody Herman's 3rd Herd during the Mars years and can be heard playing most of the tenor solos.... He currently resides in Las Vegas and anybody interested in this period of woody Herman's music can email Arno at MarshNV@aol.com My dad will be touring June 26th thru June 30th with Organissimo and Jazz vocalist Harvey Thompson. We will be performing in outdoor venues in Northern Michigan. For more information go to organissimo.org and check out our calendar.
  14. My favorites are Phish, String Cheese Incident, Dave Mathews, Cowboy Mouth, and Ben Folds
  15. Yeah, she's not only a great pianist, she's a "stone fox!" I saw Roney with her at the Jazz Showcase 5 yrs ago..
  16. Here's a good Roney story.... Back in the early 90's I went to the Jazz showcase to hear the great Elvin Jones. Wallace Roney had only been on elvin's band a couple of weeks and had previously been recording and touring with Tony Williams. Here is my story which took place about 2 weeks after Wallace Roney's first week with Elvin Jones... The first week playing on Elvin's band, Wallace Roney was having some difficulty fitting into Elvin Jone's unique time approach to swing rhythm which is, if you're familiar with his style, based on an 8th note triplet feel. Tony williams on the other hand, had more of a straight 8th note time feel.. My friend Bud Spangler, who was running sound and recording that night for a radio show at Yoshi's that first week, had a conversation with a somewhat distraught Wallace Roney about the issue, and being a fine drummer himself, Bud brought to Roney's attention the obvious difference between Elvin' time feel and Tony's. Roney nodded his head and told Bud he had never thought about the diffence before. After that conversation the last set seemed to swing a little better for Wallace. 2 weeks later at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago they are in the middle of an intense set and Wallace Roney is up there blowing a blistering solo on a medium tempo blues... As he ends his solo, Elvin drops his dynamics down real low and says very audibly, "That was nice Wally, just don't bite off more than you can chew".. I was sitting 3 or 4 rows back from the band and clearly heard this comment from Elvin, which was meant sincerely, but had a great comic affect on the other band members as well as those in the audience who heard the remark.. You should have seen Roney's face after Elvijn said that. Wallace Roney sounded great that night!

  18. Caught the first episode of the first season and was hooked! I've been following the series almost religiously! Great writers and actors... I've got access to all the episodes on DVD...
  19. Sorry JSangry... What was I thinkin'? By the way, I would love to hear your music.... I have for a long time been interested in the more creative and experimental expressions of music, I've been in a few projects over the years improvising not only on the 3 basic musical elements of melody, harmony, and rhythm, but also the equally interesting elements of color, texture, density, velocity, as well as a varied range of dynamics. Until recently, I had an experimental ensemble we called the "Flagrant Disregard". It was put together through a need to venture outside of the conventional songform approach, to a freer format based off of a sketch or concept that would allow us individually and collectively, to creatively explore and without conventional rules, new places, often resulting in exciting adventures sometimes with humor, and always resulting in great delight! Our philosophy was basically that there was no wrong note or sound... The band was inspired by Sun Ra, Art Ensemble, Frank Zappa, Lounge Lizards, Vinny Golia, early Weather Report, Capt. Beefheart, Bitche's Brew, with just a dash of Spike Jones... One night we had 8 warbling sax players in a semi-circle while I recited Capt. Beefheart's "Old Fart At Play," in a Reagan mask with a tie died shirt on that read, "No Commercial Potential".. It was at a brew pub in Kalamazoo and the college kids loved it! Do you have a website where I can hear some of your music?
  20. Randy, AAJ is Mike Ricci's board and in my opinion he can do what he likes with it, whether you and I agree / like it or not. You're right about that. It is after all, Mike Ricci's board...I guess I've said enough already, end of subject.. Thanks Jim and have a great weekend..
  21. ...it seems strange that musicians can't post about their gigs at a site that calls itself "All About Jazz". Gigs are our bread and butter. We certainly aren't making any money off CDs! I don't have a day job, nor does Randy. This is how we make our living. Seems like we should be able to post about our gigs on a JAZZ bulletin board so fellow jazz listeners know what's up. ~B3er~ Mike (xricci), Like JSangry, I too don't want to drag this issue out any further, but you have yet to explain why, or better yet apologize for censoring my post in AAJ.
  22. Wait a minute Mike... Blatant spam message?? Because I mentioned that the singer I was posting about would be featured on a tour with organissimo in late June, and anybody interested should contact us at organissimo.org?? That's spam??? My intention was not to spam AAJ.... I suggest you read the "alleged spam" posts more open mindedly before you delete'em.... Note: This quote wasn't actually in the May 29 4:13 pm post. I tried once again to go to AAJ to read xricci's posts and again was not able to post a reply without going through the whole registration process all over again. So I decided to copy and paste xricci's quote and reply to it over here..
  23. Go to AAJ/Vocalists/ "Has Anyone Heard Harvey Thompson Yet".. I gave a little bio description of Harvey and mentioned the fact that Organissimo would be doing a 5 day tour in late June; and the part about Organissimo got completely edited out of the post..xricci needs to respond to this post so the members over here at organissimo can read his response. There are many members here who would like to know what's going on...
  24. I tried to go to my post at AAJ and wanted to add a reply requesting an explanation for why my original post was edited and couldn't get in! My username and password did not work...Very strange!!
  25. It's maybe that the AAJ are threatened by the growing popularity of "organissimo forums".. How petty... AAJ is supposed to be all about jazz... Not about censoring jazz musicians from posting their jazz events Someone at AAJ needs to explain to me why my post got edited so Organissimo would not be mentioned.
