I listened to the recordings with Bechet earlier today and listened to this and a live album a few days ago. Davison must've been quite a live performer. I even scored a signed photo on eBay, which is a nice piece of jazz history.

That is a great pic. I think I'd be doing the same thing standing near Cootie.

It'd be worth buying on its own and it is paired with a great Carney album. You even get the rare recording of Gonsalves playing guitar. Now playing: Disc 1: Mosaic did a remarkable job with this set. The sound is incredible. I was reading a book to my daughter, who is not quite 2&1/2, and she hopped out of the chair to dance to this.

The Zutty Singleton sides: It's fun hearing Barney Bigard cut loose in such a New Orleans setting. After not spending much time with this set over the years, I am discovering a lot of gems.

Disc 2: This is one of those sets that can be found for ridiculously cheap (~$30) sometimes and will reward even the mildly curious.

Carter's Music Masters discs turn up for cheap around here. I think I paid $3 for this one. The big band sides on the Capitol Mosaic have never grabbed me, but I am enjoying my first listen to this.

With today being Gonsalves's centennial and my current Duke infatuation, Two from Duke was a natural choice.

It'd been a while since I'd given this one a spin. Talk about a deluxe package! With my recent Duke (and sidemen) marathon, I remembered this. I've organized the sessions together and am now listening to the Duke and Strayhorn tracks after listening to the Coleman Hawkins ones. Some beautiful Harry Carney here. What a player!

The Sacred Music of Louie Bellson and The Jazz Ballet

I've only heard a live album he did with William Parker, which is pretty out. I was a little surprised when I realized that he had recorded for Blue Note. I'd like to hear those albums. Thank you for the music, Mr. Gale, and rest in peace.

Bassist Cleveland Eaton died on July 5th at the age of 80. I know him mainly from his work with Count Basie. He is on 88 Basie Street, which is one of my favorite Basie albums. He is also on Sonny Stitt's Soul Girl (reissued as I Should Care), where he, Muhal Richard Abrams(!) and Wilbur Campbell are the rhythm section on the last 3 tracks. I haven't heard his work with Ramsey Lewis. Thank you for the music, Mr. Eaton, and rest in peace.

Disc 3, Sessions G and H: Beautiful stuff. I googled trombonist John Sanders. As it turns out, he left music for the priesthood and died last year at 93.
