  1. Disc 5: Before the pandemic hit, a local bookstore got dozens of Duke CDs in. In the past, I bought dozens of discs from an estate collection there, many of which had been marked down to a dollar to clear room. Although the bargain price has since raised to $2, I wonder how much Duke is sitting on the shelves now, bargain or not. I may have to explore their curbside option.
  2. Jim Hall - These Rooms
  3. I didn't know that this thread refers to the musician formerly known as Bob Northern until today. He contributed to so many great albums, including Andrew Hill's Passing Ships, a personal favorite. Thank you for the music, Brother Ah, and rest in peace.
  4. Disc 2: This set arrived today. I'd already streamed it to test it out and snapped up a cheap copy. I'm already in love with Afro-Bossa and Duke Ellington's Jazz Violin Session.
  5. I just finished listening to a Maynard Ferguson gig on the Blue Note's Patreon page. I think that I own one album with Ferguson on it but I enjoyed the fun set. I'm kicking myself for missing a Ferguson gig about 10 months before he died. I was in my last semester of college and only a few years into my jazz listening. Who knows what the younger me would have thought, but the older me wishes that I had gone.
  6. I'm listening to the Cooper, Holman and Rosolino Mosaic now, hoping that the battered set I bought a few years ago ripped okay. I'm enjoying Holman's arrangements for a piano-less octet where the band gets a nice, full sound. It's a set that I hadn't spent much time with, so this is eye-opening. As I move into the quartet sides, Holman is also solid on tenor. I wonder when he stopped playing. At any rate, I'm glad that Holman is still around and I hope that he is doing well.
  7. I have the Herman Mosaic up for trade. The box, booklet and discs are in decent shape and are guaranteed to play and rip perfectly. I'd be interested in swapping it for any of the following Selects: Green, Shank/Cooper, Reece, Handy, McCoy, Mulligan, Richards, Williams, Rivers, Zeitlin or Akiyoshi/Tabackin. I'd also be open to swapping it for a partial Mosaic.
  8. Disc 2, Session D (w/ Benny Powell, Gigi Gryce, Tommy Flanagan, George Duvivier and Elvin Jones): I've found some Mosaic bargains in my day, but $9.99 for this set (minus the box and giant book) takes the cake. Oddly enough, I own this and the Thad/Mel quartet album and none of the big band.
  9. I found this on Discogs without the box (and book?) for $37.74 after tax and shipping. Although it is available through my library's streaming service, I couldn't resist grabbing the physical copy for such a good price.
  10. It has been a while since I last listened to this one.
  11. Some random COVID bits: 1) George Floyd apparently had recently recovered from COVID. He survived something that disproportionately affects African Americans only to be felled by something else that does the same. 2) Some local restaurants that have already been cited for not adhering to social-distancing restrictions are now suing over those restrictions. One was a restaurant that I had planned on trying. Now they won't get my business. 3) The New York Times surveyed over 500 epidemiologists about when they would feel comfortable engaging in certain activities. The results are depressing.
  12. One of the few live shows I was able to see before the pandemic was Kenny Barron's trio in Michigan. In addition to being one of the great pianists, he is a gifted original composer and interpreter of standards (particularly Monk tunes). Happy Birthday, Mr. Barron!
  13. Kim Richmond/Clay Jenkins - Range
  14. No lighthearted political jabs in a thread that has often turned political in the non-political forum, eh?
  15. With all of that hair product? He would've looked like Ghost Rider.
  16. Excellent late-period Jackie Mac.
  17. John Handy Quintet - Live at Yoshi's Nightspot: I've been listening to some Mingus and had forgotten that I have this one.
  18. Although I subscribe to Truth Revolution Records and have access to their entire catalog, I ended up purchasing hard copies of these:
  19. In both the Floyd case and this incident, it is dumbfounding that the cops behaved this way when they knew they were being filmed. Where is the self-awareness? Even though a cop doesn't care about the person he is abusing, one would think that he would say to himself, 'I probably should not behave like this on camera.' I can only assume the worst about what occurs when there are no witnesses. Of course, when there are often zero negative consequences, it makes people think that they are untouchable.
  20. When I picked up Let Me Tell You 'Bout It, I hadn't yet heard Tadd Dameron and Illinois Jacquet, so the entire band was new to me. Being so impressed by the sidemen, I once wrote Buck Hill and asked him whatever became of Swindell and Burks, but I didn't hear back from him. Even though the strong Rollin' with Leo brings in some better-known musicians like Burns, Acea, Lucas and Hogan, Let Me Tell You 'Bout It edges it. Two great albums, though. Parker cleaning up and suddenly dying after making such a comeback was a tragedy.
  21. Charles Owens - Joy: My first listen.
