  1. Can someone skip to 30:20 of the Ray Berretto set and decipher who the bassist is? It sounds like Andy Guila but I can't find any bassist by that name. The other members of the group are Adam Kolker, John Bailey, John Di Martino and Vince Cherico. It is a nice set. I wish that I could have caught Barretto in person.

    Ray Crawford

I seem to recall that Crawford gets more space on Jamal's Chamber Music of the New Jazz, which is my go-to Jamal album. Crisscraft is excellent and has an underrated band (Crawford, Dolo Coker, Larry Gales and Jimmie Smith). Criss is in top form. Be advised that the 1991 Muse reissue has two tracks that were inexplicably left off of the two later Savoy reissues. It is worth tracking down.
  3. If there is a flaw with this album, I can't find it.
  4. Disc 4: I've been bingeing this set today.
  5. The Al Tinney Trio with Peggy Farrell - Peg & Al
  6. I bought an Al Tinney CD, co-led by his girlfriend, vocalist Peggy Farrell, years ago after a pre-concert talk about him in Buffalo. The presentation featured snippets of his music as well, which may have been unreleased. Here is a link to an article about the couple around the time of the album's release. The article refers to another album they did together in the '80s. Regarding Wade Legge, I enjoy what little I've heard of him but have never heard his work as a leader. I haven't listened closely enough to the piano on the excellent Shafi Hadi session (speaking of relatively obscure, impressive Mingus sidemen!) to even hazard a guess at whether it is Wynton Kelly or Legge. It is a shame that the recording details are so hazy.
  7. I'm listening to the wonderful Vic Dickenson/Jim Galloway Live in Toronto album that Ted recorded and later released with Galloway and I then found out that Ted hasn't been around. Has anyone heard anything from him? Here's hoping that he is okay.
  8. Vic Dickenson/Jim Galloway - Live in Toronto: I just won a nice, signed 8×10 of Dickenson on eBay for the surprisingly low price of $5.50. I was way outbid on a Kid Ory autograph minutes before, but the trombone gods still smiled upon me.
  9. I'm listening to the 1991 Muse reissue. Both of the subsequent stateside reissues inexplicably excluded two bonus tracks, which were later included on a Japanese reissue.
  10. Between this, the first two discs of the Buck Clayton Mosaic (w/ Joe Newman as well) and Don Goldie on the Teagarden Mosaic, I am listening to some fine trumpet today.
  11. Disc 1: Although I've been a fan of Mis'ry and the Blues for years, I only picked up this gem a few years ago.
  12. I am awaiting the 10-disc The Private Collection set to arrive. I paid under $45 after tax and shipping and under $38 for the Reprise Mosaic earlier this month.
  13. I don't have the new reissue yet, but I was reminded to listen to this one.
  14. On a rainy Monday, some Roy Haynes brightens things up.
  15. It is really surprising how deluxe Verve went with this reissue.
  16. Disc 1, Chambers' Music: This was my first Mosaic purchase, maybe 15 years ago.
  17. After spinning some Kid Ory in the car earlier, I was in the mood for this: Disc 1: The Off the Record crew put a lot of love into this reissue.
  18. I just snagged the Private Collection box for $44.13 after tax and shipping! That'll put my Duke collection at around 50 CDs, yet I still feel like a neophyte. I have only one volume from that series, so I am excited.

  20. You'll burn the place down with that one! Disc 1: This set really has glorious sound.
  21. That's like a Steeplechase cover with panache! Now playing:
  22. Still available on Amazon for ridiculously cheap ($2.28), with free Prime shipping available. I'm enjoying this one from harmonicist Grossi. It keeps dropping in price. I paid 15 cents more on Wednesday. I don't know why Amazon is giving this one away.
  23. An old favorite. I even upgraded to a Japanese reissue years ago.
  24. Gabriel Grossi - #Motion Live: For $2.40 on Amazon, with Prime shipping available. I paid a whopping 3 cents more yesterday, so the price is somehow dropping. Grossi is a Brazilian harmonicist, joined by a trombonist and piano trio, as well as his mentor, Mauricio Einhorn, and Hermeto Pascoal. I don't know a lot of current harmonicists and was intrigued by a harmonica/trombone frontline, so I thought it was worth a shot.
