  1. What would karma entail here? If he were to contract covid, he would likely spread it to other people due to being without a mask. I wouldn't wish a highly contagious, deadly disease on anyone.
  2. Do you honestly believe that your doctor would give you an exemption? On what grounds? If he declined to do so and cited concern for the coronavirus, would you switch doctors? How do you feel about vaccines?
  3. I don't wear a mask when I am walking the dog around the neighborhood. However, that is because it is easy enough to cross the street or turn a corner to avoid people. Considering my dog is a butthead whenever he sees another dog being walked, I am experienced in avoiding people. I mask up on the exceedingly rare occasions I enter a place of business. Considering I have made such excursions twice in two months, wearing a mask is a small price to pay for some human interaction. I am dreading this summer. I have an adorable toddler whom everyone wants to see, but not everyone has been practicing social distancing adequately.
  4. That one is an unheralded classic, IMO. I bought a used copy a few years ago and discovered that Richardson had written a personal inscription to a friend, which was a nice surprise. His tone is glorious. Now playing: It's hard to go wrong with a rhythm section of Phil Markowitz, John Benitez and Clarence Penn.
  5. I'm listening to Going Beyond by Ed Michaels, a local saxophonist. My collection is in such disarray that I can't find the disc to confirm the personnel.
  6. As Colligan says on his website: "At the moment, the album is ONLY on Bandcamp because this is a way to support us DIRECTLY. Perhaps years ago I would have pressed CDs, but I think under the circumstances, I’m bringing the music out in the most direct way possible." Bandcamp has lossless options available. I realized after I bought it that I should have waited until the next day Bandcamp was waiving fees. At any rate, it is a welcome release. I need to track down the band's studio album.
  7. George Colligan has released Humanity, a live recording from 2003, on Bandcamp. Colligan is a monster, as are Gary Thomas, Drew Gress and Ralph Peterson, Jr., so it was an easy purchase for me.
  8. That is probably my favorite OP album as well. Now playing: Connie Crothers-Lenny Popkin Quartet - Love Energy: I'm enjoying my first listen to this. Edit: This is more like an EP at about 34 minutes, so it is getting an immediate second spin. I'll be checking out more Crothers-Popkin dates for sure.
  9. Regarding Washington, he may be the future commercially, but I find him to be unlistenable. When I saw him open for Herbie last year, I left the amphitheater and waited for his set to be done. His music was heavy-handed, repetitive and uninspired. When I briefly chatted with a couple who had brought their baby, the dad referred to the concert representing a changing of the guard. When you think of all that Herbie had done by the time he was Washington's age compared to Washington's output (and what Herbie is still doing, for that matter), it was a laughable statement.
  10. I've been meaning to check out Popkin, Tabnik and Crothers for a long time, so I ordered these 2 downloads for $4.99 apiece from New Artists Records: The Tabnik is even a double album. If I decide to upgrade to hard copies at some point, the price was right.
  11. Ron Carter - The Bass and I
  12. New Chordtet - The band used to be the No Chordtet until they added a pianist. This is a nice one, with some unexpected versions of tines by the likes of Dewey Redman ('Joie De Vivre'), Wayne Shorter ('Tom Thumb') and Lee Morgan ('Tom Cat'). People here would dig this one and its chordless predecessor.
  13. Luke Carlos O'Reilly - Living in the Now: I saw O'Reilly on organ with Red Holloway about 6 months before Holloway passed (with Teodross Avery on board as well). O'Reilly and company remind me that I need to spend more time checking out the current Philly cats.
  14. Modern, Latin-inflected jazz with a groove. The Curtis Brothers have really got something going.
  15. Josiah Woodson - Suite Elemental: I keep coming back to this one. Woodson plays trumpet, flugelhorn, guitar and flute here.
  16. Ray Vega - Chapter Two: Some gorgeous trumpet from Vega with George Colligan on piano.
  17. Peter Friedman brought this one to my attention. Cedar Walton, Bob Cooper, Andy Simpkins and Ralph Penland as sidemen!
  18. I was just surprised that it arrived in 2 days with just being First Class. Heck, I received a shipping notification after it had already arrived that gave a range of this Friday to next Friday.
  19. It is a different person. I downloaded the album after reading a positive review following its release and enjoyed it.
  20. On the opposite end of the spectrum, I ordered a CD from a third-party seller on Amazon on Saturday morning. It arrived in my mailbox in Ohio from Washington on Monday. It was sent by First Class, which makes the fast arrival all the more unusual.

    Tina Brooks

For anyone curious about Rick Montalbano's playing, I recommend guitarist Paul Kogut's Know It? I Wrote It!, a nice trio record with Montalbano on organ. IIRC, Montalbano is Jane Monheit's father-in-law.
  22. The great Ron Carter is 83 today. Here's wishing him a happy birthday. I'm listening to a gig from the Blue Note's Patreon page that he did with Houston Person.
