I own more Hart than I thought, with 3 leader dates, 1 date co-led with Roy Hargrove and one as part of the Jazz Futures collective. As with many young lions from that time, being on record labels with good distribution led to some bargain-bin finds for me 15-20 years later. At any rate, I hadn't spent a lot of time with his records, but pulled this one out prior to seeing him this upcoming Saturday. You have to love a young alto player having the moxie to bring in Gary Bartz for an alto duel. It's a shame that he hasn't recorded much in recent years, as he is a strong mainstream player. His group this Saturday will include Robin Eubanks and Freddie Hendrix. I'm looking forward to hearing what he does with that front line.

The Off the Record reissue was lauded here. I plan on buying it soon and was pretty impressed by their Wolverines and New Orleans Rhythm Kings releases. Samples can be found here. Now playing: After finding Young's Verve sessions set for $20 and Basie's Complete Deccas for $2 last month, I've found myself digging into this set, which I hadn't spent much time with in the several years I've owned it. I still have 5 or 6 discs of Verve material and the Deccas to hear. Between all of this Pres and the Chu Berry Mosaic, I don't need to leave the house.

One can buy the legit 5 Original Albums box, which includes Search for the New Land, The Rumproller, Lee-Way, Delightfulee and The Cooker (I know, it's from the '50s) for $15 on Amazon. I realized that if I were to buy that box, I'd have all but 4 of the albums included in the Mosaic. No matter how much I love Lee Morgan, I am not at the point where I am willing to rebuy material I already have that has already been reissued in satisfactory form. There is so much music out there that I haven't heard for me to pay a premium to repurchase a huge chunk.

Nice player. I've seen him in Detroit a couple of times in the last couple of years with some of Detroit's finest, most recently backing Phil Ranelin for his 80th Birthday show. Mark Stryker may be able to tell you whether Williams is still mainly based in New York, though. The first time I saw him was so I could see a full gig with saxophonist Cassius Richmond, whose huge sound has captivated me whenever I've heard him playing outdoors.

I've dreamt of a Brotzmann standards album and have stated elsewhere how, despite the extremes of his playing, Brotzmann is fundamentally a melodic player. I'm adding this to my list and hoping that he swings through on a solo tour in support of the album.

I just saw him play last week for the third time this year. Roy is still amazing!

I started a thread thinking that this reissue had escaped the board's attention, so thanks to Chuck for setting me straight. I've just ordered this and am excited to get my first taste of New Orleans Rhythm Kings. I've been listening to Off the Record's The Wolverines disc lately, so this was an easy purchase. I may order the King Oliver set after Christmas.

Unless the Morgan set includes tons of unreleased material, I'm not sure why we need a Mosaic. I am a Morgan fan, too. Like Mobley with his '60s output, Morgan was treated well by the CD era.

Johnny Griffin's self-titled Argo album deserves more attention. That domestic, LPR reissue series from Verve was great.
