  1. The Jimmy Heath - Triple Threat: I'll be listening to more Jimmy Heath today in celebration of his 93rd birthday. I've been listening to this one lately after a few years away from it. The sound he achieves with just a sextet is so rich and full. This has to be one of my favorite Freddie Hubbard sideman dates as well.
  2. Here's wishing Mr. Heath a happy birthday!
  3. Oh, my. This one hits hard. I decided to give it a spin with my seldom-used Amazon Music subscription (I'm not sure whether it is included with just Prime) and am a bit surprised to see the download is selling for only $3.87.
  4. Joshua Breakstone - Japanese Songs: I purchased this after catching Breakstone's Blakey tribute on Tuesday. I chose this album because of Al Harewood, whose subtle, swinging drumming meshes well with Breakstone and Earl Saul's work. I'll have to check out more of Breakstone's discography, as he is a thoughtful player who chooses substance over flash and keeps heavy company.
  5. I saw Hart with DeFrancesco last year and enjoyed it immensely. It was in Pittsburgh with a super group that also included Andy Bey, J.D. Allen, Tineke Postma, Ingrid Jensen, Sean Jones, Orrin Evans, Mark Whitfield and Reginald Veal. The University of Pittsburgh's jazz seminar concert is an annual must-see event. Now playing: I need more Rusty Bryant in my life.
  6. I guess it is a trumpet kind of day. Byrd, Hubbard and now Berigan.
  7. My go-to Hubbard album, one of those magical dates where everyone was in top form.
  8. Donald Byrd - Off to the Races (from the Byrd/Adams Mosaic)
  9. Eddie Brookshire, the bassist on Bryant's Friday Night Funk for Saturday Night Brothers, still occasionally ventures to Cleveland to play gigs, but I haven't seen him yet. On a related note, I am about to see a gig with Jim Rupp, of Hank Marr fame, on drums.
  10. Soulstation1 beat me to the punch. Rusty Bryant Returns is one of my favorite soul-jazz albums, with some essential Grant Green and stellar work by the other, lesser-known sidemen. I was only hipped to it from a local club playing it between sets one night. Coincidentally, I bought it after seeing Grant Green' s son play the same club.
  11. Happy Birthday! We talked a bit about Freddie Hubbard after your last gig with The Cookers in Cleveland.
  12. I am resurrecting an ancient thread, but I managed to snag a Venuti/Lang box, discs sealed (but no giant book), for under $65 after shipping and tax. I was at a store last year that had 5 loose discs being sold in 3 pieces (1 disc for $10 and the other discs at $20 for 2 discs). I bought the single disc to sample the set, but I never anticipated finding the set for such a reasonable price.
  13. Yes, John Chin! Chin is one of my favorite discoveries of the past seveal years. I ordered Fifth from Chin's Bandcamp this year and the download features bonus tracks not on the CD. I heartily recommend his Undercover and Blackout Conception as well. I'd be genuinely shocked if Robmid and fans of modern piano didn't like Chin.
  14. In the past week: Terry Gibbs/Buddy DeFranco - Airmail Special Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang - The Classic Columbia and Okeh Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang Sessions William Hooker - Aria Vinny Golia - Syncquistic Linear Expositions and Their Geopolitical Outcomes (...We Are Still Here...)
  15. Disc 2: This is only my second run through this box, but it is becoming some of my favorite Trane (and Dolphy, for that matter). Throw in a long track with Roy Haynes and this set becomes all the more indispensable.
  16. Jim Cutler Quartet - For Real: Without checking the liners, I believe 'You Go to My Head' is the only standard on this album. It is such a strong collection of memorably melodic originals. I know a lot of people here would dig it.
  17. Thanks for reminding me to play this one, which ended up in various stacks after I found it at a library sale and ripped it. Barth is underrated and impressed me when I saw him live with Rodney Whitaker. I've been meaning to play this one after recently listening to him on Terell Stafford's Lee Morgan tribute a couple times last week.
  18. Along with the tracks from the expanded group with Lee Morgan, Sahib Shihab, Melba Liston, Cecil Payne and Wynton Kelly.
  19. Oh, man. The same band (plus Bob Brookmeyer) smoked on the live date recorded two months before. That makes this one a no-brainer.
  20. Wasteful with a side of spiteful. Alrighty.
  21. So, it is better to chuck things in the garbage rather than sell them at a lower price than you'd like?
  22. That is so wasteful. Surely you could find someone to take unwanted stuff off of your hands.
