  1. ok; just enough Schicksas.
  2. too many schicksas.
  3. Bobby Darin does a great version of that song on Atlantic; it's always been a big inspiration for me. The film was by Jack Webb, and, according to Floyd Levin, he based it on the life of his friend, the trumpeter Pete Daily who, IMHO, is one of the under-recognized greats of old time trumpet playing (and who also witnessed the same mysterious event that got Frank Melrose killed, and left town in a hurry, for a long time). I like the whole concept of the non-blues blue song; there's a piece on our new project called Pete Dailey's Blues.
  4. true, And I'd have a hell of a lot more cash to show for it.
  5. do you mean the session or Copenhagen? Because I like that city a lot, as did Danny Kaye.
  6. I just did a solo piano session with Lewis of my compositions for our new and expanding CD project (looks like 4 cds). He is brilliant, intense, explorative, knowledgeable, you name it. Really knows the history of the piano, too. And just an all around helluva mensch. I will try to post a clip by this weekend -
  7. question - can I back up personal cd collections on the Cloud?
  8. they got any vacancies?
  9. Charlie Parker was on the panel? He must smell bad by now.
  10. John McCusker is a great guy and knows more about New Orleans than anyone I've ever spoken to. GET THIS BOOK - it will break down a lot of the mythology about New Orleans.
  11. what about my Nigerian cousin? He just won the lottery....
  12. "stuck inside the tunnel forever" so I assume when they told you, they were still down there? It's a good thing there was still cell phone service.
  13. everything electronic needs to be broken in. besides, I thought he meant "salted to taste."
  14. I LOVE BIRD. wide enough?
  15. I don't agree about the general veracity because the book corrobrates a lot of things I have learned since the first time I read it - the more I learned about those early pre-Jazz years, the more it matches the things Mezz says. Even the pre-blues stanza he quotes sounds, to me, that it had to have come from pre-1920; and I don't think Mezz could have been aware of this from any other source in 1946; nobody was talking about that stuff in that way. It is possible that some of the reform school stuff is fiction - I don't know - but to me the musical observations just add up. In that sense it may be the the prequel to Beneath The Underdog -
  16. The Tablet, the on-line mag, has asked me to do a piece on Mezzrow and his book Really the Blues; I hadn't looked at it years, and, re-reading it now, I am absolutely amazed at how good it is, for many reasons - 1) the writing is fine - probably helped by Bernard Wolfe, an excellent novelist and fascinating guy himself - 2) the historical importance - think of it; here we have a very reliable witness to jazz at the beginning; Mezzrow was born in 1899 and was exposed to African American musical and instrumental styles as early as 1915 - and his reports of song and stanzas are extremely significant (he quotes one odd, pre-blues couplet that is near the blues form but not quite - tantalyzing) - also his reference to early black musician friends going ont he road in circuses; his apparent witnessing of the Original Creole band or some offshoot (with Keppard) as well as The Original Dixieland Jazz band. this is an amazing piece of literature, social autobiography, maybe, and has a lot to say on race (and there are some weird but difficult-to-figure out references to early white cabaret/blues singers which are completely unique and which demand further research) - I recommend this book.
  17. he's crawling first - \ Adam - I have the blues set - but cannot really discount it as deeply - send me an email at allenlowe5@gmail.com and I'll see what I can do -
