  1. well, guess what, just found out the Liners nomination was for just Francis, not me. Hmmmmmmm.... funny thing is, this is the 2nd time something like this has happened to me. oh well.....
  2. sure, it must be for Blues and the Empirical Truth, right? Well it is - but not for the music - for the liner notes, along with Francis Davis. So does this make Blues and the Empirical Truth the CD the equivalent to one of those musicals where, as the comedians used to say, "you walk out whistling the scenery" ?

that's ok, I do not like Woods. If you can get the above named Fresh Sound, it's got several different combinations of groups, and includes some of the best Dick Katz on record (Dick sometimes got stuck in his 'John Lewis' mode, but he really sparkles here). But Quill is on fire and incredibly complex in his playing.
  4. well, the interesing/significant thing about that story is how dumb Lundvall was. He probably didn't know who Jeff Beck was.

been listening all morning to the Fresh Sound/ Gene Quill The Tiger: Portrait of a Great Alto Player. all I can say is that I forgot how amazing a player he was. A genius? I don't know, but rhythmically and harmonically one of the most brilliant alto players of that generation (or any other, actually) -

  10. Joe Puma. Al Gaffa. Tal Farlow (one of the regulars, I know). Tiny Grimes did some nice things. Al Casey (the one who played with Fats Waller).
  11. looking for a decent, inexpensive electric piano that self-records, on disc, or whatever they use these days. Any suggestions out there?
  12. still available -
  13. I would accept Macdonald, whom I admire. As for tomorrow's attire, I am suspending judgment, since that apparently is what bothers people. Which means, of course, that we must also stop telling the American people that they are being fooled by Republicans and other political scammers.
  14. Medjuck - it's not a question of fooling anyone - and truthfully, name me ANY young people who liked it. I was young when it came out and I hated it. And even if they did, well, many people accept counterfeit creations as the real thing, from paintings to jeans. Doesn't mean they are quality, or that people are not being fooled. and Val - it's really not becoming to simply indulge in personal attacks because you disagree so strongly with me. Not once on this thread have I attacked you in any way, your motivation or your reason for holding your opinion, I simply disagreed, and I was only respectful toward you in our disagreement. You cannot say the same, sadly.
  15. "it's not the pop dream but what you make of that dream that's important." - Stanley Kaufman read the above quote (I'm addressing everyone who thinks Herbie's pop music sounds better than drek). And then go read writers like Peter Handke, or check out filmmakers like Wim Wenders - all ARTISTS who loved American pop culture, but who synthesized it into something personal and deep. We might also say the same of Burt Bacharach, though in a different way. Or of course the Beatles, in a different realm. Herbie just took a market survey and then tried (with market success) to play to it. But it's awful stuff, and sounds like an old guy's idea of young music.
  16. Larry - glad you said that about the whole audience thing - are you familiar with Walter Benjamin's whole philosophical treatise on audience?
  17. I have one whole set of That Devilin' Tune: A Jazz History 1900-1951 that is 4 boxes, 36 cds with the whole text of the book. It's still sealed. I don't want to break up the set, I will ship in the USA for $160. This was originally intended as a promo and it was returned to me; they never marked it as such, but it was re-sold to me at such a low price I can move it like this. my paypal is alowe5@maine.rr.com
  18. let us not forget Hall Overton and John LaPorta.
  19. I actually wrote an entire book about this - if it ever sees the light of day. But this is incredibly important music.
  20. sometimes with Prez these later things are like reading the diaries of a great writer - more fragmentary, less continuity, not as focused - but indispensable. They just give us a particular picture of genius at a particular time.
  21. I saw her in Boston about a month ago - her recordings are fine, but in person, she convinced me she's the greatest singer alive.
  22. I actually thing it was different with Armstrong - I actually wrote a piece about this, in which I drew parallels between Armstrong and Elvis Presley.
  23. well, now that she's out, I'm applying for the job. Can anybody lend me a calculator?
  24. those must be the ones I own, mostly. I also like the Philly Joe Jones in England release. Also, good Jimmy Witherspoon, Wardell, great Nat Cole/Charlie Shavers, some great California stuff from the '40s.
  25. my god, what are they doing? Is that Alan Bates guy still involved? Of course a lot of their original pressings were not too good; maybe he feels that in order to get it the way you should have gotten it in the first place, you gotta have lots of cash.
