  1. don't worry, I wasn't offended, and I like the original title better - remember what Chet Baker told Mussolini's kid -
  2. actually, on all those records he made, I though he WAS playing synth - didn't sound like a piano -
  3. Kenny dreamed he was Professor Longhair - I once dreamed I was Bud Powell - or at least playing like him - Chewey thinks he's Lou Donaldson - Ron S think he's Stokowski - is this an unhappy group of guys, or what?
  4. by the way, as corroboration for Fats Navarro on those 1950 Birdland dates - Kenny Frederickson, I think it is, a bebop pianist, wrote a series of pieces for the Jazz Institute of Chicago in which he talks about seeing Fats at Birdland right around that time -
  5. apropos of this topic, I want to recommend that every American read Dr. John's autobiography - which tells us more about New Orleans and its relationship to American music than 40 showings of episode one of the PBS Jazz documentary -
  6. well, thinking about Dick Katz, who just died; one night he said "every time Bird coughed somebody recorded it and put it out."
  7. I'm also somewhat concerned because I haven't seen Ron S. around since the new board started - anyone know his where-abouts?
  8. I thought this was a food thread - right now I'm having a burger.
  9. I'm still unable to do THIS -
  10. Personally, I am a Bobby Stark fan. great trumpeter.
  11. just want to note that Massey Hall is brilliant - AND - if you can, hunt down the version in which Mingus did not overdub his base (it's in the Debut box; there's also a Euro release of same) - it so much better, one wonders what Mingus was thinking - sonically it's like listening to a different concert -
  12. I can, as long as the coroner doesn't show up first.
  13. there's a great Carnegie Hall concert that's been booted for years, with Al Haig, in very good sound. Also, don't forget the McShann broadcasts; there's also the basement tapes that Zim put out (Al Haig was asked if he was on them, as is sometimes claimed: "Are you kidding? I wouldn't go into any basement with Charlie Parker").
  14. love Rockland Palace though for years it was mastered a 1/4 tone sharp - I always wondered why they were playing Lester Leaps In in B.
  15. there are some recordings, that came out as part of the OJCs, in which he's all over the place, even splits notes as he goes toward the altissimo range - I have a feeling he was stoned out of his mind, but the playing is incredibly adventurous.
  16. my favorites are Live In Paris, Barry Harris Plays Barry Harris, Preminado (out of tune piano and all) and the "live" one from the West Coast (can't remember the name); also, the Sonny Criss that Xanadu put out has some of Barry's best playing.
  17. Barry also played the Angry Squire right after Monk died, and did an amazing night of all Monk tunes - he was a frequent booking there in the late 1970s. One night I brought Percy France down, as I wanted him to sit in, and thought he and Barry would be a good match. The opportunity, unfortunately, did not present itself. Would have been quite interesting.
  18. " jazz is a national treasure" well, in that case, as the old saying goes, let's bury it -
  19. I can, as long as she doesn't deflate.
  20. an interesting and very "tonal" intro by Cecil - at least for a few minutes -
  21. musta been the 60 Minute Man.
  22. uh oh - duplicate topic - this is gonna piss off Larry -
  23. well, everybody knows Australia and the entire UK is full of weirdos - I mean, look at Winston Churchill - Tony Blair - Jack the Ripper (just to name the three most popular Brits) -
  24. it'll never make it through the Senate - Lieberman says if they don't take out the public domain tunes, he'll vote against it -
  25. reminds me of that old joke: why do Jewish girls make love with their eyes closed? because they hate to see someone else having a good time -
