  1. I paid 99 cents at Waldbaum's Supermarket for my first Charlie Parker LP. also found Cannonball with Strings there, for the same price. Also, Stan Getz.
  2. only unfortunate thing about Moody (who is one of the nicest people I ever met) was his put-down of nearly everybody in a DB blindfold test he did maybe 15 years ago - and then showing, in his contemporary (at the time) playing that his whole current style would not exist but for the changes and musicians he was putting down. It's a little like the things Brookmeyer says in interviews, et al. With Moody, one listen to his playing (and this was about 1993) and one could hear how much he was weaving in and out of the harmony in ways that would not have happened but for the opening up of the music. Unfortunately this seems to be a problem for nearly every older-generation musician who is having trouble understanding certain kinds of cultural changes -
  3. nice thing about a smaller bass is that it's easier to play in the marching band:
  4. personally I don't like the late Novus/RCa stuff - too smooth, they took all the edge off Moody. Did anyone mention the live date with Miles and Dameron?
  5. hey, if I could, I'd give myself a negative - you know what they say about self hate.
  6. hmmmm......I could give you a negative for saying that.....or I could give you a break - you feelin' lucky today?
  7. anybody else find Steve Lehman to be essentially uninteresting? He seems to be gathering a rep -
  8. "This system is totally meaningless and worthless in my view." that's why I like it - I vote we keep it - no one will DARE disagree with me now -
  9. wrong position for playing the instrument:
  10. plywood? also, no matter what you do, DON'T blow into it -
  11. I like the POWER it gives me. Kinda like Lord of the Flies.
  12. now it should be +1; I'm in a good mood.
  13. well, this is fun - just clicked a few. Nor sure what I did. Hoping to win the negative race. Just fixed your rating, I think -
  14. hmmm...and how does one do this? And can I find out WHICH of my posts received this rating?
  15. ok. maybe this has been answered - but how come my reputation is "-1" ? (and how can I try to increase my minuses?)
  16. paps - what you're hearing isn't any kind of sound cleanup or noise reduction - what you're hearing is how much better the concert sounds without the Mingus overdubs, which is the way it originally was. His overdubbing muddied everything up -
  17. fascinating man and a nice guy - I had lunch with him last Fall and he was the most sincere and least materialistic person I have ever met - an old-line Socialist who really lived his beliefs.

  19. interesting to think about, because 14 years in Maine has been a strange and unpredictable experience - near complete personal and musical isolation, only one or two friends to speak of, maybe 5 gigs and a complete reversal of professional fortune (as a musican I have gone, as I like to say and to paraphrase Groucho Marx, from obscurity to a complete non-entity). Maine is cold, hostile, shallow and afraid of anything that is slightly different; almost anti-semitic, in a genteel (gentile?) way, viewing the odd Jew or two who makes any attempt at achieving a public persona into more of a curiousity that belongs behind some kind of bars. and yet, the kids love it here, and my son , who has Aspergers and who would likely have not survived true city life, graduated high school and is working. So, with nothing else to do I've written 3 books, done two major historical reissue projects, and taught myself guitar (also started composing again, but that represented a block that took over 10 years to break). And I will add that I found this place, which is the one element that has kept me from complete withdrawal. Also, finally found a band, though, of course, finding a place for that band to work is another story. And yet I've retained a sense of assurance of my own abilities, enforced by nothing in Maine but my few contacts with the jazz work of NYC (as in Rudd, Shipp, Sandke, Ribot, et al). now I have to figure a way to get the hell out of here.
  20. you should add - health insurance plan passed by Congress (almost) - it will be a few years until it kicks in, but this will basically insure, as you reach old age like me, that you will NOT be bankrupted by a catastrophic illness (among other benefits).
  21. my favorite song of theirs, if I remember correctly, was Harry Braff - that early album also had something called, maybe "1942 Mineshaft Explosion" ? can't remember the titles after 40 years. Also, Words.
  22. look, anybody who can make fun of Kind of Blues is all right with me - just to let you know that the rules have changed a LOT here since you left. From now on, all underwear must be changed THREE TIMES a day. And every year at Xmas we must pay tithe to the moderators; that or send them a first born. glad to see you -
  23. sorry, I'm in Tokyo and it's the day after. Where were you guys yesterday? I cried myself to sleep.
