  1. I think I have an LP of that band - and Red Allen's even younger than me - scary thought - it's one thing for you old guys to feel old, but we youngsters...
  2. thanks Niko! rescued again from technical oblivion - sometimes I think JazzMoose was right -
  3. actually, for some reason my view has changed so I can't see all thread posts at once but only their highlights/headers - this happened once before but I cannot remember how to fix it - how do I change the settings? thanks -
  4. yes, you're right - and who knows, maybe he did improve them? I've found that I'm virtually always able to improve on the originals, even when they are transferred by a major label - mostly because mastering engineers are terrible when it comes to EQ, or since they will often use eq to mask noise or other problems, or they have lousy monitors - it would be interesting to a-b these - though I'm always nervous when they start apologizing for surface noise. What's the big deal? Sometimes it's just part of the listening experience, and eliminating it entirely can be very destructive -
  5. in truth, they are not remastering, just making dupes - the Robert Johnson cuts on Sony are sonically pristine, as are the Bird/Verve's - and if the Tampa Red stuff comes from the RCAs, those are also in very nice shape on old LPs -
  6. about Webster, I recall credible tories of incidents - would have to research -
  7. read Tina's autobiography - there is an implication that there were others -
  8. life, chicken, moose, orange, wellington - plenty of rhymes -
  9. just to reiterate, Ike was a terrific musician - but I think we have to take seriously the reports of his abusive side, which was more than just a matter of a bad temper. There were clearly incidents of coercive sex, and I see no shades of gray when it comes to rape. And once again, I think we have to take the victims at their word. I see no reason why Tina would make this stuff up. People wonder why she stayed with him for so long, but when it comes to sexual victimization that is nothing new - If you want to hear amazing guitar work, about 10 years ahead of its time, listen to Ike's work on the sessions he did for Sue Records. he was a bad guy who played great music - not the first; let's not forget that Ben Webster also reportedly abused women, Max Roach beat up Abby Lincoln, Miles Davis admitted to smacking Cicely Tyson around (and Howard McGhee told me that when Miles first saw McGhee's wife, who was standing right next to McGhee, Miles walked up to McGhee, pointed to her, and said "who's the white bitch?") - all of these incidents are important, because if we are going to discuss someone's personal qualities, we cannot leave out the bad stuff without essentially lying - and I'm sorry to hear that about Doc Pomus, whom I've always admired -

  19. and in the next scene a group of women, in the Lebensborn program, put on white nighties and move across the lawn on a warm moon-lit night, as the German band plays Tea for Two to a meringue beat - and the women's hips glide sensually in unison, symbolizing fertility and the Nazi ideal of happy shining white children, as the women's clogs, in a lord-of-the-dance synchronization, spell out the first 8 paragraphs of Hitler's Reichstag fire speech, in morse code.
