  1. not trying to cause trouble, but is there anyone else here who, when listening to Sun Ra, after, say, 1965, can almost never get through an entire track? my mind wanders to another place, let us say, as I listen (to the land of boredom?) - love his piano playing, by the way, and have the Bley-produced solo album -
  2. "This site was down/not available to me this morning. Was anyone else shut out?" sorry, that post makes too much sense - moderators take note - and please escort this gentleman out of this thread -
  3. or three: Sp el lcheck
  4. actually, isn't Spell Check twowords?

  6. I often have things I want to post but have no place to post them, and end up annoying people by putting them in threads that have nothing to do with my post. So I am starting a free-form digression thread, open to anything as long as it is not insulting or hurtful (excluding my own posts, of course) - and no naked pictures or anything related to barnyard animals (save that for the "offering and looking for" department)
  7. I met Francis at Bill Evans's funeral, and we corresponded for a time - he was a genuinely nice man, we started talking because he found out I was a friend of Haig's, and also that I knew Bill Triglia - he also was surprised to find anybody who knew a lot about Bud Powell, so we had a bit in common. I know he was a troubled guy, from what I heard later, but I found him, in my brief encounter, smart and focused and decidedly unlike the image of the obsessed fan/collector. I lost touch with him, and I know he had a lot of problems later on, and I was very saddened to hear not just of his death but of the way he died -
  8. just BTW, Harold Danko told me some years ago that Tesh studied with him for a whie - Danko was much amused by Tesh's attempts at music making -
  9. just replied - most of the heavily discounted ones are gone, but I can still offer them at popular prices -
  10. "there was a similar migration among whites at this period, which had a big impact on Country music. " yes, think Oakies and Bakersfield; Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Roy Hogsed; also, tons of Western Swing moving west, also Rose Maddox and family -
  11. well, I hesitate to mention him because he always annoyed me personally, but Michael Rabinowitz (from New Haven) is quite a good jazz basoonist -
  12. I think it's likely to be that same Hague, who also, btw, appeared in that annoying movie and on that TV series based on the High School of Music and Arts (can't thinkof the name right now) -
  13. 2010-2020; this is the time period in which Ken Vandermark was proven to be the next Bird - and in which his new agent, EDC, finally got him on the Ed Sullivan Show - (Twilight Zone music in background: da da da da; da da da da)
  14. yes, definitely losing my mond (should be past tense) - and, no kidding around, Doris Day is my favorite singer (listen to the 1950s Columbias; avoid the things she did post-1960s movie star) - to paraphrase a well-worn quote, she was a better singer before she became a virgin -
  15. wel, if you have to ask....
  16. I don't really have much info about The Grupo Bahainano, unfortunately, just thought the music was fascinating -
  17. glad to see this is still under discussion - funny thing is, a few months ago someone on another list mentioned a track on the compilation and for the life of me I had no recollection of including it - sent me back to the box to find it; I still didn't remember putting it in - I think I wiped my memory after I finished this thing -
  18. where's the laugh track when I need it?
  19. someone said to Armstrong, "what is jazz?" he answered:"don't ask don't tell."
  20. someone said to Armstrong, "what is jazz?" he answered: "talk to Sangrey, and be sure he draws a distinction between vertical and horizontal concepts of improvisation."
  21. someone said to Armstrong, "what is jazz?" he answered: "talk to Ken Vandermark."
  22. someone said to Armstrong, "what is jazz?" he answered: "what do I look like, the guy who invented the modern concept of swing?"
