  2. just on a serious note, there's an old blindfold test with Miles Davis in which he correctly identifies a Strayhorn, as opposed to Ellington, arrangement for the band - Miles was sharp - and my favorite Strayhorn tunes are Johnny Come Lately and Rain Check - great themes, both of them, and very original -
  3. careful - Nessa's docking people for mis-spellings -
  4. guess you could say she's a sucker for saxophone players -
  5. well, someone has to be the collective memory - and, after all, Shirley was my first wife and mother of my 6 children - we were very happy until she served as a delegate to the 1992 Democratic Convention, where I caught her performing an unnatural act in the elevator with Bill Clinton.
  6. last of the great avant garde pianists - especially his stuff with Hamid Drake -
  7. Strayhorn is interesting, but if I never hear Lush Life again it will be just fine with me - strange thing is, if you call Nessa on the phone, it's on his answering machine along with Wooly Bully -
  8. didn't help that he wasn't too bright - I remember an interview with Bill Russell where Russell was talking about the political atmosphere and the fact that things had changed in terms of how publicly people could express their prejudices, and that now people were more subtle in their racism - Snyder's reaction was completely straightfaced and sincere, to the effect that he knew what Russell meant, that he himself had to watch everything he said on TV or some crazy person at home might be offended - COMPLETELY missed Rissell's point and it was quite hilarious. I also loved Dan Aykroyd's impersonation of him on SNL - perfectly captured his pompous cluelessness -
  9. loved him in Casablanca -
  10. bumping for the daytime crowd -
  11. actually I'm referring to Izzy Hayden, a bass player from Philadelphia, and Irwin Dolphyy, a janitor at the Yeshiva in Greenpoint. Ralphy Burns, of course, was the lifeguard at Camp Whogivesashit, in Paupack, Pennsylvania - until he knocked up Shirley Beaverwide and had to leave town in a hurry - though who would have predicted that Shirley, a virgin until she met Ralphy, would one day end up as a toll collector in the Holland Tunnel?
  12. close - more like Yarmouth -
  13. some lps for sale: Jimmy Woode The colorful strings of Jimmy Woode Paul Gonsalves Clark Terry Ramsey Lewis Sam Woodyard Porter Kilbert Argo vg $15 Listen To Barry Harris Solo Piano original Riverside vg+ $12 Hal McKusick Quartette Jazz At The Academty Coral $25 excellent cond Ornette Coleman The Great London Concert 2 lps rec. 14. its ok but not as good as Kenny G playing the Nielsen concerto; or Larry Carlton Plays Segovia -
  15. that's unfortunate - I like the monster truck idea - maybe also to drive it through the local gallery/performing space that won't book my band -
  16. I know what you mean, and I became burned out on certain kinds of "background music" gigs, which no longer seem worth it unless there's a lot of cash involved - right now I'd just like to find a consistent place to compose/play -
  17. tempting - a midwest tour - it could happen - let me do a little thinking - as for making our own gigs - yes - working on that now but facing some oddball obstacles - had a venue interested in a little local weekend festival - along comes one of the booker's friends - says, hey, we've got an idea for a little weekend fest - same dates as I proposed - guess who they book? I was ready to strangle the twerp. Another problem is getting local media to cover anything but indie rock, which makes promo difficult - however, I have a few ideas and I am working on it, putting together some alliances with younger guys who have, at least, heard of Julius Hemphill - rocker guys, great musicians, and we get along well. I'm hoping the Braxton thing turns into something. We've been talking for quite a few years; at the least it'll be a nice chance to compare notes -
  18. would like to - problem is finding a new day job at age 53 - I find age discrimination is the new American way - my wife (59) is finding same - given two decent jobs and health insurance and 2 kids and an elderly parent, mobility is limited -
  19. Portland, Maine - 10 miles south of Hell -
  20. haven't had a gig in 5 years - live in a town run by 25 year olds - local bookers don't return my phone calls or emails, yet Anthony Braxton just asked me to come down and see him to discuss a project - what's wrong with this picture? I hate this fuckin' town = AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH feel better now......................no need to go out and kill a kitten -
  21. well, as I recall, Bob James did record, at one point, for ESP -
  22. true - but they do post a warning on the station about listening to it at the same time that you're operating heavy machinery -
  23. well, I stay away ftrom drinking water - for the same reason WC Fields stayed away -
  24. probably no truth to that one - biggest problem I had was soggy sinuses whenever I tried to snort it - also had trouble getting the whole bottle top to fit into my left nostril - was even tougher with the can -
  25. they are also adding channels for: "some jazz," "no jazz," "dead jazz," "what's jazz?" "who jazz?" "why jazz?" and "occassional jazz whenever we feel like it."
