  2. yes, I love Tatum - O.P.'s got the speed, but that's about all - and he pisses me off, so I guess listening to him is good for me - God knows how many years of my life I've lost by avoiding him for the last 30 years -
  3. I don't remember that one, but will have to look through my Carson stuff - sounds like his kind of tune -
  4. I thought this was about a Duke Ellington tune - haven't listened to that Doors version in a long time but as I remember it's pretty straightforward - did you have the window open? Maybe it was the wind and outdoor acoustics, which can wreak havok with pitch - -

  16. I just want to add that my previous post was in no way a criticism of Margaret's management of Henry Grimes, and I don't want it to be interpreted as such; I just felt that one nice thing about criticisms made in these forums is that they are usually direct, honest, and heart felt - and that they should be countered in specific, not general terms.
  17. yes, Larry, thanks for saying that - Killian was a great trumpeter, nothing like Sandoval - a real player, musical and fascinating to listen to - there are also some good citations and analyses of his work in Schuller's Swing Era, as I recall -
  18. "I only feel sorry for the few resentful sad sacks out here who go into attack mode after a few beers or because they're alone or they don't like women or whatever their problems may be." please spare us the gratuitous attacks on un-named figures, as this is exactly the kind of thing you are complaining about relative to your own relationship with Mr. Grimes. I'm sure you're doing a great job, but there are lots of examples of jazz mismanagement and lots of legitimate questions about the state of jazz employment -
  19. I'm not a Van Dyke Parks fan - I find his writing to be too precious, reaching for a poetry he just does not get to -
  20. the amp guys have a saying about keeping one hand on your nuts when you are handling high voltages, so as to stop the shock from passing through your heart - but as this was a baptism, that might have been inappropriate -
