  1. d'oh! i missed the part restricting the list to 10... hence; jimmy smith : the sermon grant green : idle moments joe henderson : mode for joe paul chambers : bass on top sonny clark : sonny's crib horace parlan : headin' south dexter gordon : one flight up stanley turrentine : jubilee shout herbie hancock : the prisoner hank mobley : a caddy for daddy incomplete and dashed off, but there it is... -e-
  2. i'm not suprised. all of those poll winners dates were well engineered. i really like them, too. great air and seperation... -e-
  3. brownie mentioned your name over in the wallington reissue thread, too, sir... -e-
  4. ah, ah, ah. you didn't clarify which information and the preceeding posts referred to the list. the information concerning licensing came from a couple shop owners (not hiroshi) and a japan victor employee. the information concerning K2 is sheer conjecture at this point. regards and sorry for the confusion, -e-
  5. for starters... (i.e. what i'm listening to this week) jimmy smith : the sermon thad jones : the magnificent thad jones grant green : idle moments joe henderson : mode for joe paul chambers : bass on top sonny clark : sonny's crib horace parlan : headin' south dexter gordon : one flight up lou donaldson : swing and soul hank mobley : hank stanley turrentine : jubilee shout herbie hancock : the prisoner hank mobley : a caddy for daddy -e-
  6. reiner, this particular list was compiled by myself based on research @ hmv. enjoy, -e- ps: hans link, above, essentially takes you to the list i posted. japanese label sites would be the last to post information. look for something on jvc's site in late january.
  7. Left Alone: ビリー ホリデイに捧ぐ VICJ41816 -e- ps: it must be 'white gardenia' because the middle character above is 'holiday'...
  8. One of the rarest albums ever from bop pianist George Wallington; a quintet session recorded for Atlantic's short-lived East/West subsidiary, right around the same time as his better-known group dates for Prestige! The core trio features Wallington alongside Teddy Kotick on bass and Nick Stabulas on drums; and the sharp-edged and imaginative tenor of JR Monterose appears on all tracks but one; a few of which also feature incredible bass trumpet from Jerry Lloyd! The sound is often more modern and inventive than Wallington's other non-trio dates of the 50s; somewhat playful, but also dominated by a deeper sense of soul; heard especially strongly on the Monterose compositions "The Prestidigitator" and "Jouons", as well as the Mose Allison numbers "In Salah", "Promised Land", and "Rural Route"; all slightly unusual choices for Wallington!
  9. mg, there's no minimum time frame before release date required for a pre-order. i've ordered at least 60 days in advance before, so feel free... -e-
  10. just a note that this lil' gem has recently been reissued, too. its catalog number is wpcr 25118 regards, -e-
  11. you must be joking... www.earlyrecords.com or hiroshi@earlyrecords.com regards, -e- ps: pre-ordering is a wise thing to do as 1000 yen titles are generally available in what's described as "limited quantities". i've had experiences pre-ordering titles like this previously only to find out they're out of stock on release day...
  12. you know what i say? if gm can't evolve and compete in the global marketplace, then i say good riddance. note to american car manufacturers: this is the 21st century and consumers are way past taking what you give them just because its there. we now have choices. design and engineer *better*. -e-
  13. the list came from me. hiroshi (many of you know he and i are old friends) was unaware of the series until i brought it to his attention... each title is confirmed and again, as i understand it, is K2. frankly, i'm not that big a fan of the process, so it doesn't really matter to me. what does matter is that there are some titles unavailable (in japan) for many years making an appearance. every title here as been pressed by japan victor before. cheers and happy holidays, -e- ps: freddie roach title corrected...(to 'my people (soul people)') pps: japan victor has not lost its license. it's simply doing something (anything!) it can to flog a stagnated market.
  14. fwiw, i am so with you on impulse! then again, it could be said that the impulse! oeuvre represents a completely different frame of music history than blue note. therefore, one would expect a more diverse catalog from a more diverse time. on the other hand, the diversity at impulse! began to expand just as it seemingly began to contract at blue note, not so concindentally concurrent with alfred lion and francis wolff selling to liberty in 1965. -e-
  15. i'm sure this is remaining K2 stock, but some nice titles nonetheless. the 1000 yen price ($8.70) is very attractive. regards, -e- ps: these are packaged in standard jewelcases. part I; 24 january: ---------------------- vicj-41801; the quintet; jazz at massey hall 41802; charlie parker; bird on 52d street 41803; charlie parkerl bird at st. nicks 41804; thelonious monk; monk 5x5 41805; thelonious monkl at the blackhawk (+2) 41806; thelonious monk; in italy 41807; cannonball adderley; nippon soul (+1) 41808; ken mcintyre; looking ahead 41809; oliver nelson/eric dolphy; straight ahead 41810; ron carter/eric dolphy/mal waldron; where? 41811; sonny criss; sonny's dream 41812; clark terry; serenade to a bus seat 41813; benny green/art farmer; benny green with art farmer 41814; curtis fuller; with red garland 41815; james clay/david fathead newman; the sound of wide open spaces 41816; johnny griffin; left alone 41817; johnny griffin/eddie lockjaw davis; lookin' at monk 41818; jimmy heath; the thumper 41819; jimmy heath; the quota 41820; clifford jordan; spellbound 41821; lennie niehaus; quintets 41822; lem winchester; another opus 41823; dorthy ashby; in a monor groove 41824; red garland; red's good groove 41825; barry harris; chasin' the bird 41826; mose allison; back country suite 41827; paul bley; the complete introducing paul bley 41828; freddy redd; san francisco suite 41829; hampton hawes; for real 41830; andre previn; west side story 41831; sam jones; soulsociety 41832; roy haynes; cracklin' 41833; max roach; deeds not words (+1) 41834; elvin jones; elvin 41835; philly joe jones; blues for dracula 41836; art taylor; taylor's tenors 41837; milt jackson; all too soon: the duke ellington album 41838; milt jackson; big 3 41839; modern jazz quartet; echoes 41840; joe pass; virtuoso #3 41841; joe pass; i remember charlie parker 41842; oscar peterson; porgy and bess 41843; oscar peterson/count basie; satch and josh 41844; count basie; 88 basie street 41845; count basie; warm breeze 41846; ella fitzgerald/oscar peterson; ella and oscar 41847; ella fitzgerald; fine and mellow 41848; mark murphy; rah (+1) 41849; bev kelly; in person 41850; bev kelly; love locked out part II; 21 february: ------------------------ vicj-41851; sonny rollins; next album 41852; sonny rollins; cutting edge 41853; sonny rollins; easy living 41854; sonny rollins; solo album 41855; art pepper; live in japan 41856; art pepper; today (+3) 41857; art pepper; complete winter moon sessions 41858; art pepper/george cables; complete goin' home sessions 41859; art pepper/george cables; tete-a-tete 41860; mccoy tyner; fly with the wind 41861; mccoy tyner; trident 41862; gene ammons; goodbye 41863; sonny stitt; so doggone good 41864; stanley turrentine; west side highway 41865; gary bartz; shadow do 41866; patrice rushen; prelusion 41867; peter erskine; peter erskine 41868; latin jazz quintet; latin soul 41869; shirley scott; mucho mucho 41870; cal tjader; mambo with tjader 41871; cal tjader; tjader 41872; cal tjader; los ritmos calientes 41873; dave pike; bossa nova carnival 41874; dave pike; rimbo carnival 41875; pucho and his latin soul brothers; tough 41876; mongo santamaria; mongo explodes 41877; johnny hammond smith; the stinger 41878; johnny hammond smith; cooks with gator tail 41879; jack mcduff; the honeydripper 41880; jack mcduff; goodnight, it's time to go 41881; jack mcduff; hot bbq 41882; shirley scott; soul searching 41883; shirley scott; hip soul 41884; richard groove holmes; living soul 41885; larry young; groove street 41886; trudy pitts; introducing the fabulous trudy pitts 41887; freddie roach; my people (soul people) 41888; charles kynard; professor soul 41889; bobby timmons; little barefoot soul 41890; bobby timmons; got to get it 41891; john wright; south side soul 41892; john wright; nice 'n' tasty 41893; gene ammons/sonny stitt; soul summit 41894; sonny stitt/jack mcduff; meets brother jack 41895; sonny stitt; soul people 41896; johnny griffin; grab this! 41897; king curtis; soul meeting 41898; george braith; laughing soul 41899; bill summers; feel the heat

  17. i've enquired about a complete listing with catalog numbers. if and when i receive it, i'll post it. in the meantime, i think you're sleuth enough to compile the list manually @ hmv.co.jp... regards, -e-
  18. for those interested in this session, be patient. it's coming out as a 1000 yen ($8.67) release on february 21st. that's cheap soul food, -e-
  19. i understand what you're saying, but can't the same be said of riverside, prestige, et al? most labels during the time frame being discussed had a stable of players that comprised their dates which resulted in certain consistencies... the sides from some labels are simply more diverse than others due to variety in material and groupings. i don't see it as a blue note thing, although they certainly had their sound. ?, -e-
  20. it was indeed... on the topic, i have been studying lcd vs. plasma for at least a year. i'm impressed with the sharp aquos line. thanks also to lenny for the avia dvd recommendation for color calibration. as you were, -e-
  21. well please do something to correct that. i found your last one to be quite evocative and i always enjoyed finding your posts alongside our cigar-chomping friend... -e-
  22. am i the only one who can't see porcy's avatar...? -e-
  23. no kidding! this should be covered in basics of dating 101. either you're supportive of your potential spouse's interests or... -e-
  24. it's a standard dvd with painted label packaged in a well designed, booklet-free standard dvd case. the quality is about a 'c'. after all, it is black and white european television footage from 40 years ago... as i said, the two sets are almost identical, at least in composition (certainly not so much in playing). imho, worth the price of admission. regards, -e-
  25. i picked this dvd up in baden-baden just as the cart broght it out from the stockroom. it is choice (although it is, after all, black and white television from 1967)! it consists of two nearly identical sets in stockholm and karlsruhe (adjacent to baden-baden). naturally, the quintet is en fuego. regards, -e-
