  1. just out of curiosity, have you ever had the occiasion to work with pat?
  2. ...and why exactly is it you know that?
  3. the revolution will be accessorized. a compilation of writings from BlackBook magazine.
  4. you're hardly alone. i can't add much at this time, but i can certainly agree with you 110% that 'afro/american sketches' is an unqualified masterpiece in a collection of relative masterpieces. the accepted party line is that the larger the nelson date, the better. however, i don't swallow that pill. nelson is one arranger who could do very little wrong, imho...
  5. obviously a sacred instrument for many jazz fans, to be sure. my question is do and/or will you play this organ and/or what have you done with it?
  6. well, they'll always be listed as being available...
  7. i own the wes date on a japanese dvd. it is * happening * !
  8. what planet did you come from and what did you do with chuck nessa?
  9. no hans; my dutch is no good. i mean to say that it was the first compact disc ever manufactured... ya, i believe it to be *one of*, if not *the first* appearance of 'birth of the cool' on disc in japan. iow, probably best avoiding that tocj-5301.
  10. without my collection near, i know that tocj-5953 was issued in 1995, has 12 tracks (as opposed to the 25 track "complete birth of the cool"), and was remastered by toshiba engineers. hopefully that helps... ps: tocj-5301 was issued in 1989 and is certainly one of the earlier (if not earliest) of cd issues in japan. pps: trivia: tocj-5302 was june christy's "something cool".
  11. by the way, the difference you asked about concerning the tocj-5000 series is that those catalog numbers represent non blue note label material... after reissuing a good part of the best of the blue note catalog, toshiba began releasing material from other labels (mastered by their own engineers).
  12. every lonehill disc i have, all 4 or 5 of them, are so sonically inferior that i can't imagine this session would be an exception...
  13. i'm not sure if you're serious or not. you think mosaic would go there? there's been a low key flying dutchman reissue series in europe over the past few years. i had to go for the oliver nelson titles ('skull sessions' [replete with its heavy metal looking coverart], 'afrique', and 'swiss suite') myself.
  14. johnny mercer select al cohn/joe newman/freddie green select also, the two new singles (jj + kai and ellington) have their own pages now.
  15. it's a watershed of a recording. moody and hanuting. maybe a different side of brazilian music from that era. again, not in the quote-unquote tradition, but simply stunning.
  16. great recommendation, as are most on that list. these two (from 1971 and 1973, respectively) are very funky recordings and not at all in what some people seem to think of as a traditional brazilian sound. they are * choice * and if you're into the blue note rare groove 4200/4300 scene, check them out! also, the baden powell is a gorgeous masterwork. that simply can't be missed.
  17. ps: davis stone martin 10 inch collector's series
  18. it was a series, actually. the box was an additional promotional mail-in item from disc union. both the box and the series (around 40 titles, i believe) are among the most treasured in my non-lp collection. almost every verve/clef/norgran in the thread here is represented. oddly, the bud powell title was *impossible* to find. apparently it sold out on pre-orders alone and precious few made it to retail.
  19. hey, i've been interested in that book. what are your impressions?
  20. nonetheless, that's a pretty interesting, and original, release.
  21. genius that he is, there's no getting around marcos valle. among his best, these two are on on odeon (and you should own them); o composito e o cantor viola enluarada
  22. is that the highest price for a mosaic disc set...?
