  1. it's so subjective that it's not funny. one listener enjoys bumped up highs, detail, and resolution while another listener appreciates the density of rudy's original work... at least we all agree on what a teriffic date this is, -e-
  2. my point exactly...! -e-
  3. indeed they do - but very few seem to like the nihongo... -e-
  4. well, to get down to it, the deal is this: the japanese engineers equalize the masters they have with each issue so as to appeal to what they percieve japanese tastes are. hence the earier quip from cuscuna about them "adding tape hiss"... however, i'm in your corner on this one. this latest series has resolution like there's no tomorrow. is it super true to rudy's original work? probably not. in the end, what matters most is its appeal to our own ears. -e-
  5. to my mind, the answer is directly related to the availability of material contained within a given set. on the other hand, material from sets like the mulligan, grant green, lee morgan, and others is available and it doesn't seem to have dented values. supply vs. demand. in the mosaic equation, supply seems to be always outstripped by demand. viva le édition limitée, -e-
  6. it's amazing the lengths to which some "collectors" will go! frankly, if i were after a set the last thing that would deter me is an e-mail or ebay message from another bidder. then again, i've shot notes to bidders when they're bidding on a title that's supposedly out of print (we all know that game...) or widely available elsewhere for cheaper. -e- ps: yeah, which set was it???
  7. out today is a new three-disc/one-dvd set from legacy dedicated to the body of work from weather report. having long held off on completing my conversion of their catalog from vinyl to digital due to inferior mastering (which is ironic given the nature of zawinul/shorter/et al's ever-looking-forward prowess), i'm curious how these sides stand up. are they remastered? remixed? straight transfers of currently available masters? this is one small chance for columbia to do right by weather report and release something decent. my hopes are that this one delivers. ???, -e- ps: for those who haven't seen the track listing, the set contains a condensed, alternate of "in a silent way" with miles and the title track to shorter's "super nova" as a way of presenting an arc of how the primaries evolved. ------------------------------------- 1 In a Silent Way Zawinul 4:18 2 Super Nova Shorter 4:51 3 Experience in E [excerpt] Zawinul 5:44 4 Milky Way Shorter, Zawinul 2:32 5 Tears Shorter 3:24 6 Eurydice [Full Version] Shorter 10:46 7 Orange Lady Zawinul 8:42 8 Unknown Soldier Zawinul 7:59 9 Directions Zawinul 5:31 10 Surucucu Shorter 8:19 11 Second Sunday in August Zawinul 4:12 12 125th Street Congress Zawinul 12:14 13 Nubian Sundance [live/#] Shorter 13:07 14 Blackthorn Rose Shorter 5:00 15 Badia Zawinul 5:22 16 Cannon Ball Zawinul 4:38 17 Black Market Zawinul 6:33 18 Three Clowns Shorter 3:24 19 Havona Pastorius 6:02 20 Birdland Zawinul 5:58 21 Palladium Shorter 4:48 22 The Pursuit of the Woman with the Feathered Hat Zawinul 5:03 23 The Orphan Shorter, Zawinul 3:17 24 Sightseeing Shorter 5:35 25 Dream Clock Zawinul 6:29 26 Three Views of a Secret Pastorius 5:54 27 Port of Entry [live] Shorter 5:08 28 Dara Factor Two Erskine, Pastorius, Shorter ... 4:27 29 Procession Zawinul 8:42 30 Plaza Real Shorter 5:31 31 The Well Shorter 3:58 32 D-Flat Waltz Zawinul 11:12 33 Domino Theory Zawinul 6:10 34 Predator Shorter 5:20 35 Face on the Barroom Floor Shorter 3:59 36 Indiscretions Zawinul 4:08 37 125th Street Congress Zawinul 5:03 38 Black Market Zawinul 39 Scarlet Woman Johnson, Shorter, Zawinul 40 Young and Fine Zawinul 41 The Pursuit of the Woman with the Feathered Hat Zawinul 42 A Remark You Made Zawinul 43 River People Pastorius 44 Thanks for the Memories Rainger, Robin 45 Delores/Portrait of Tracy/Third Stone from the Sun Hendrix, Pastorius, Shorter 46 Mr. Gone Zawinul 47 In a Silent Way Zawinul 48 Waterfall Zawinul 49 Teen Town Pastorius 50 I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good/The Midnight Sun Will Never Set on You 51 Birdland Zawinul 52 Introductions 53 Fred & Jack Erskine 54 Elegant People Shorter 55 Badia Zawinul
  8. i'm a huge fan of kon ichikawa's "tokyo olympiad". it takes its subject matter of the 1964 summer olympic games and presents it in such beautiful fluidity. this is a narrator-less film, but completely engrossing nonetheless. if you're in the mood to sit and surrender to the sheer aesthetic of a film, this is one to check out. -e-
  9. i won't address 'concierto' because it's so ubiquitous. 'studio trieste' is credited to three primaries: chet baker, jim hall, and hubert laws. it also features jack wilkins, kenny barron, jorge dalto, gary king, george mraz, steve gadd, and sammy figueroa with arrangements by don sebesky. the track listing: is: 1. swan lake (8:42) 2. all blues (9:43) 3. malaguena (9:44) 4. django (10:02) i feel its a well-rounded somewhat typical CTI date, in the better sense of the word, due to chet's presence. the sides were recorded in march and april of 1982, so he was in fine form. -e- sound clips here...
  10. i'm curious about this one. brad's last few have left me very cold. i feared it could have gone the way of the all-too-self-important wayne shorter/herbie hancock "1+1", but in fact it may be closer, at least in spirit, to "beyond the missouri sky". at any rate, pat seems to be leading the party (and rightly so, imho). listen to the clips here and tell me what you think... -e-
  11. it's still there... -e-
  12. i certainly can't vouch for the retailers description, but it's a cool shirt nonetheless. elsewhere on the site are all the bluenote shirts as well as a variety of others... -e-
  13. ran across a nice t-shirt that i thought some folks around here might be interested in... it's available for $25.00 h e r e ... regards, -e-
  14. those two are absolute killers. killers! i could listen to them play for days... -e-
  15. i'm *really* curious about that nuyorcian remix disc, having been a fan of the original set for some years now. is it as fulfilling as the original? -e-
  16. jim - all i can say is, roni size is *very* inconsistent and more often than not out and out hip hop. stick to his remixes of others material and you might find some other tracks you like. otherwise, my advice is to be careful with his own full length records... -e- ps: see the monday michiru free soul compilation?

  18. venus discs typically run 2500 yen, which is 16.70 euros or $21.40 usd @ todays rate... -e-
  19. in my mind there is no comparison whatsoever. the venus dates are far more cohesive and present the trio as a well-oiled machine in contrast to the blue notes, which while good, have something that weighs them down or keeps them from fully realizing their potential. also, the venus dates (released under the banner of the new york trio name) aren't thematic (a la carmichael and bernstein). then there's that venus mastering... do yourself a favor and check them out, -e-
  20. picked this up today and am on my second listen. excellent disc and slightly more adventurous than his previous recordings with this particular trio. if you're looking for wide variation, you may come up frustrated. remember, stanko was a darling of the burgeoning european avant-garde scene of the mid to late 60's onward, along with his good friend krzysztof komeda, whom he recorded at least seven sides with. so in some ways, maybe he's been there and done that. therefore as a listener, i've never approached his work with skepticism. anyhow, i'm *really* enjoying 'lotano'. check out the discography at his site and you'll find work with more edge. i think it's very well designed... www . tomasz stanko . com. -e- ps: be sure to check the discography carefully as there are compositions from his earlier records you can listen to that show his prowess for the outside.

  22. i *love* the beginning of "soy califa", the opener on "a swingin' affair"! it never fails to put me in a good mood. i give the edge to this record over "go!", but only by the most narrow of margins. "gettin' around", from 1965 (3 years later), however is probably my favorite blue note. -e-
