that was me, chief. not sure what you're going for here. if you're referring to my mention of needing to check out 'elder don' again, i've owned the thing most likely longer than you've been alive. appreciate your enthusiasm though. -e-

why thank you! -e-

it is truly magical. talk about a late-night vibe... exactly. not an addition to the quartet to be found anywhere on the set. i suppose they have to draw the line somewhere. you know, that's a date i need to listen to again. it doesn't stand out in my mind as too hip. maybe it is and i just don't remember. just to muddy the water, grant and john patton are on wilkerson's "shoutin'" and grant and sonny are on "preach brother!" -e-

i never warmed up to 'solid'. 'street of dreams' is, imho, a sheer masterpiece. what a group. the sides at hand (with clark) are probably the highest watermark of grant's career. a friend of mine turned me on to these when they were issued on king, so when they were transfered to disc and issued domestically i pounced on them. as everyone has so much as said, they'll become the centerpiece of your grant green collection. cheers! -e-

11 pages and not one mention of jeff 'tain' watts. i was at a kenny garrett gig last year and my buddy up and walks flat out of the club (and doesn't return) after one too many migrane-inducing clams from tain... regards, -e-

from the label: ----------------- October 30 , 2006 “Neighbourhood”, Manu Katché’s ECM leader debut, has won the German Critics Prize – Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik – as Jazz Album of the Year 2006. From the jury’s findings: “The French drummer Manu Katché, who has played on hundreds of records with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Sting and Dire Straits has not been in a hurry to follow up ‘It’s About Time’, the first CD issued under his name. 15 years have passed between that disc and ‘Neighbourhood’. His recording on ECM assembles a cast as unexpected as it is convincing: the Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko, and members of Stanko’s quartet Marcin Wasilewski, piano, and Slawomir Kurkiewicz, bass, meet Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek, playing in peak form. The chemistry of the team is a perfect blend, both amongst the rhythm section and between the horn players. At once delicate and relaxed, Katché’s compositional sketches unfold gracefully. His lucid drumming never forces itself into the foreground of this fascinating and well-made French-Polish-Norwegian production that emphasizes the musical qualities of European neighborliness.” The award will be presented to Manu Katché on Saturday, 18. November 2006, at the Berlin Musikinstrumenten-Museum.

so does 'northern windows' get the nod...? -e-

i think the manne sides could be tinkered with. nothing seems to be sacred. my feeling is that with the recording levels and perfect seperation already so choice that anything else may come off as gimmicky... speaking of hawes (as i did earlier), i've never picked up 'northern windows' on disc. how's that transfer? -e-
-
indeed! for off the rack recordings, those are s u p e r b. any listener reading this who doesn't own that set, do yourself a favor and seek them out. there has never been any west coast quintet club jazz to surpass this playing (although the hawes sessions come close). immaculate stuff, -e-

thank you! -e-

exactly... -e-

elctronic drums on this set...??? i don't recall them. not having heard these sides in a awhile i can say for certain that any electroinics are as understated as they can possibly be. this is intelligent (primarily?) acoustic jazz from the 80's at its very best. -e-

you're in for quite a treat... -e-

question: has this material been remastered or is it a straight reissue of the current masterings? i see only a mastering credit to lundvall @ the mosaic site... regards, -e-

Art Van Damme - Swinging The Accordion On MPS

yeah, i don't want to denegrate loussier at all. his thing is his thing. in cicero's hands, however, this material swings with more authenticity. i hope these sets encourage the universal de decision-makers to open the vaults a bit more... -e- -
two sacd's that should have a place in your collection and are teriffic system demo discs; bill evans: 'sunday at the village vanguard' and sonny rollins 'way out west'. i think late's recommendation for the gil evans title was excellent, too. welcome to audiophilia, it's a good thing, -e- ps: lately, i've been *really* enjoying the coltrane 'fearless leader' box mastering on my system as well as the remastered and remixed vince guraldi date, 'a charlie brown christmas'. both are excellent examples of what domestic engineers can do.

i agree - in my opinion i prefer it to jacques loussier. maybe there's no comparison. there's something authentic in cicero's conception that makes the material work. generally crossing jazz with classical is a dicey proposition, but it works here. regards, -e- -
marcus - if you're more interested in the music than the mini-lp packaging, king is just underway with 20 titles in a 1500 yen cti reissue program. from your list, only 'polar a/c' (kicj-2172) and 'fingers' (kicj-2154) have been reissued. some might be interested in bill evans 'montreaux II' (kicj-2177). anyhow, i'll keep an eye out and let you know if any of your other wish list items appear. regards, -e- ps: king records page link

i'll take a look round when i'm in the EU next month to see if i can pick it up on the cheap... it's funny that you mentioned it, because i've been interested in it since it showed up on my radar a couple months ago. it all predates the passport era, right? -e-
