  1. interesting. perhaps you enjoy what is taking me some time to get my ears around; that it's a somewhat atypical date for them both... that being said, it's going on as soon as i get home. cheers, -e-
  2. i, for one, can get with it. soul bossa trio has some happening sides, too. -e-
  3. i dunno. i've a number of verves whose roster doesn't deliver what you think they'd be capable of. case in point: getz + baker. another: getz + the peterson trio. come to think of it, stan getz is the common denominator here. when's the last time roy eldrdge and johnny hodges let me down... -e-
  4. i own the hawkins date, but have never owned the hawkins/eldridge/hodges sides. i recall it being around dometically for some time. does it live up to its potential? the sonics on the hawkins are warm and clear - one of the better live club records that verve did, IMHO... -e-
  5. for the curious: sound clips from the label and their own site... enjoy, -e- ps: 'spensive'..that's funny!
  6. mg - you're in the 10%... (with (bb) and i) -e- we're in the same city, (bb). my car thermostat, hardly the noaa standard, read exactly 100 on the way home over the bridge... -e- ps: whew. pps: going to a darkened and (hopefully) cool movie theater.
  7. who might have the july 18th lot on sale? i dropped by tower last night (7/20) and they were $12.99... -e-
  8. at least 90% of you lot have air conditioners... where i am, it's in the high 80's to mid 90's with no air conditioning. -e-
  9. domestically, they did. it was even a sought after members-club-only-bonus toshiba tocj issue en japon. which renders the applause version all the more weird. i was under the impression these gems were record club type issues a la the jazz heritage foundation. anyone seen those packages? -e-
  10. that's one of many things i love about your posts! -e-
  11. i was given a copy of 'lush life' and as funky as the packaging is, the source is no needle drop... -e-
  12. pm'd you on 'slightly latin' and 'auf'... -e-
  13. well, to address jim's statements, i think we can all appreciate just how ridiculous the marketeers of this country (if not world) have gotten at exploiting a demograph or consumer base with music. i mean, my god, sitting in a movie theater before a film, while filling my car with gas, standing in line at the bank. our culture is being obliterated with musical subterfuge! am i right? and oh the dreck. i sympathize with the owner of the shop in kansas city when she lamets how much bad music she has to listen to remain au curant. as for what the future holds for the state of music for true afficianados, i prefer to think that intelligence and taste is intelligence and taste, period; neither the i-pod nor downloading will supplant it. in other words, there will always be a place for the mosaic records of the world. however marginal or slim (as we've always been, anyway), collectors of tangibile musics will remain. word to the observation about 'the final comedown'! however, i'll leave the door open for technology to advance to the state where the experience of purchasing and enjoying a recording comes near to replicating that of a record store. who knows - maybe in a few years we'll all have the abiltity to print out comercial grade high quality artwork and burn a true 24-bit/96-mhz pressing from a wells stored digital master. all i do know is that the ability to harness the technology to enhance our experience is there. right now, it seems that whether the marketplace will actually realize this opportunity is somewhat grim. but the dust is far from clearing... -e-
  14. i have a vintage marantz 2270 that's as clean as the day it was boxed running in my living room. what a tasty treat... -e-
  15. it basically says that the technology takes standard cd audio coding and extends it into properties heretofore occupied by dvd-a... -e-
  16. to be renegotiated with concord? nonetheless, the mastering technology is being put out to pasture... -e-
  17. just as an fyi, K2 is being replaced in japan by K2HD (and perhaps another mastering technology that's still being branded). hence, the discounted prices on the victor catalog (who licenses the OJC material)... -e-
  18. not so quick there, gramps. many of 'em are on your label... -e-
  19. i haven't given it a good listen in at least 18 months. last time i did, however, i remember thinking that i'd given such a seemingly great date so many chances to impress me and all it did was underwhelm me due most entitrely to spauldings offbeat musings... easily my least favorite of all duke's sessions for the label. however, i'll pull it out and give it a spin just to see if i can catch the groupthink zeitgest. -e- ps: for those who haven't, check out "honeybuns" + "prairie dog"...
  20. if you like 'the natural soul', you'll love 'possum head'! why don't you give it a listen? it's h e r e ... enjoy, -e- ps: the remastering is excellent.
  21. now remind me again why it is that some members just don't contribute that much to the proceedings around here...? ah, gotcha! -e- ps: michael brecker once told me "jazz eats its own".
  22. volume II is no joke, either. i've had these, and others in the series, for a long time... -e-
  23. just a kick here that 'first place again' is my favorite desmond recording, period (and i have them all). there's a smokey late-night session feel to this record that simply incredible art. desmond and hall play a seamless set with what i feel is a bit more substance than on the rca sides. -e-
  24. i own six three drawer units in graphite that sit on top of casters and under a cabinet top (with photographs and lighting on the countertop). since i love them so much, i hardly have any remaining perspective, but every person who sees them as a component of an understated and well-designed home office rave to no end about them. i would see black as too generic and difficult to keep clean and dist-free, showing their age in the not too distant future. any other color would be too obtrusive. sure, i thought, fire engine red would look tricky for a year or two, or while i'm in this home, but using it to perserve my collection for decades isn't as consistent or decoratively flexible as graphite. one last thing, when researching and purchasing my units, i really had no real or concrete (pardon the pun) understading of just exactly how heavy they are when fully (or even mostly) loaded. once during a remodel project, a friend and i tried to move them. after all, they are on casters. that was a bad mistake as two of the casters actually buckled under themselves from the sheer weight. common sense advise: move while empty. otherwise, these units are the gold standard in media storage. -e-
