  1. i replaced my NAD C542 about 3 weeks ago with a cambridge audio azur 640C. what an incredible difference... i wonder how good their amps are, -e-

  3. i have a mint copy of this gil fuller monterey title that i would trade for something of equal rarity. -e-
  4. the probelms with 'sweet rain' stem from the master. i've heard four different pressings, including an original LP, and they all sound darker or more muddy than they should. 'the individualism of gil evans', however, is very sweet in its most recent mini-lp incarnation (POCJ-9210). i know of a late 4100-series donald byrd title that's notorious... -e-
  5. i'm hardly a compilation collector myself, but emi brasil has a wonderful series of 5, featuring almost every artist recently discussed here, that are stone excellent. i found them for $6.00 a piece via amazon... here's the coverart (which hardly represent the quality inside): please know that it's referred to as the "esso e bossa nova" series (which is not notated anywhere on the artwork...). regards, -e- ps: track listings can be found h e r e...
  6. hiya - i'm looking for copies any of the following steve khan titles on disc: "eyewitess", or "arrows". PM me if you have spares or copies you could part with. regards, -e-

  8. unfortunately, the hayes reissues are the same ol' pressings with the same ol' poor source material as the prior batch. the only difference is that this series will be in jewelcases. i second brad's nomination of "a day in copenhagen", -e-
  9. takanaka is an ace guitarist, a la benson. probably a bit commercial for most tastes here. IMHO, the wilen 'auto jazz' is a mess. attempts @ avant streams of consciousness played over race car sound effects. the hayes reissues are lower priced issues (refelcting a trend in the japanese marketplace) and are in jewelcases, not mini-lp's... -e-
  10. i gave this a listen last night and i can see why it was chosen as an AOTW. for one, the arrangements are definitely on the one and executed by, as akanalog says, a working band. i like the absence of benson. the group sounds as if they're working harder than on other organ combo sides to get the material over. as for being lonnie smith's "best", obviously that's subjective. it seems there are many phases to his career and, hence, sound... -e-
  11. i believe in doing the right and honest thing as it relates to all of this. i *never* burn copies of any title readily available. however, i can't control what others do if i loan out a disc. i can't really see placing a "DO NOT BURN" label on the front of a jewelcase. while mainstream commercial artists may enjoy an income that's able to absorb the filesharing (et al) trends, most of the artists all of us here enjoy cannot. i honestly feel that by burning and/or filesharing their material that it's tantamount to depriving an artist of income they would have otherwise enjoyed. after all, i paid for a recording of material to listen to privately, not the ability to copy and distribute that material. on out of print rarities (titles not easily come by via the usual shops/sources), though, i have different feelings. on the other hand, no doubt we all purchase a significant amount of used recordings (either LP or CD). an artist is in no way compensated for that... -e-
  12. thank you (that was me you quoted)... -e-
  13. let me make clear something that i didn't understand previously: this is a 370 + page coffee table book, not a standard hard cover bio by any means... the $45.- cover is completely justified. -e-
  14. mr. jackson - about a month now and still no sign of wildflowers... ???, -e-
  15. yes, the individual recordings on CD... not that this set isn't a brilliant universe of its own - it is. and it has bonus material not found on the inhdividual recordings. -e-

    Bobo Stenson

i can't say enough about bobo stenson. one thing i can say with conviction though is that he seems criminally underrecorded. i had the pleasure to hang out with he and charles lloyd one evening. i'll never forget that... i'm looking forward what what ECM says is a forthcoming trio date with anders jormin and paul motian. -e-
  17. me neither... the music isn't as dense (as the offerings from the so-called european quartet) and allows, at least me, the room i like to absorb what i'm hearing. -e-
  18. i simply prefer listening to the individual recordings. -e-
  19. i take exception with this on the sheer fact of current and future collectors following this art form to its roots; namely the initial-pressing of the LP... i hate to use the word purist, but the purist, or otaku-minded, collector will forever be tracing jazz to its genesis. -e-
  20. to me, this is very simple. a japanese collector won this auction as it was one of the few missing pieces in his collection (or partial collection; some collect only 1500 series). i know several japanese collectors after having lived and traveled there for a long time and not a single one of them purchases with a forethought of investment or appreciation... it's just not part of the equation. regards, -e- ps: now on the other hand, if japanese collectors seemingly endless budgets are being stretched by straw bidders, mercy on that sellers' soul...
  21. i have to revisit this thread and admit that maybe i wasn't as supportive of anita as i should have been. since mike's last reply i've been incorporating this material into my listening pattern. given the breadth of what's she's done, which would be supremely documented by the mosaic set, her career w/ verve is impressive. regards, -e-
  22. i'm offering a very mint copy of this set from my own collection. PM me if interested. regards, -e-
  23. no, you're not... i'm foolish enough to think of it as a discount house, too. FWIW, the rajah ain't all that. regarde, -e-
