  1. well, good on ye, lon! tasteful little trio dates, aren't they?
  2. my pleasure. it was a great series and i'm still regretting a few titles i missed (such as dexter gordon on dial and some others...).
  3. http://www.catfish-records.jp/product-list/224 http://www.hmv.co.jp/fl/5/348/1/ it wasn't a pacific jazz series, per se, but obvously you can easily select out the pj titles from the above lists.
  4. nothing essential....? ahem. i would dare to say 'california suite' is essential. to me, at least. brilliant record.
  5. nintendo jazz. i like it. i don't think 'blue matter' sounds anything like it though. but maybe you played hipper games than i did...
  6. i will - but keep in mind the release date is 90 days out...
  7. thanks! I've been waiting for 'the section' forever...
  8. i rarely find multiple takes enjoyable or entertaining... especially when they're sequenced immediately following the released or additional alternate takes. it may be educational in a academic way but it interferes with the linear listening experience of the recording.
  9. i felt that way after i acquired about 15-20 bethlehem titles in a prior reissue series. they all sounded so tired, dated, and generic to me at the time. since them i'm certainly glad i didn't liquidate a single one. not only have they aged well, but i find myself returning to them time and time again. not because they're musically revolutionary or break new ground by any means. i find the material, straight and workmanlike as it is, incredible infectious in an audio verite fashion. almost without fail each side finds the cast of the label, sometimes in unique pairings, playing their hearts out, warts and all. the whole of the catalog is compact and easy to get a handle on (i.e. they certainly didn't release anything even approaching the numbers of other labels) and i find coming back to it whenever the mood strikes very refreshing - a nice antidote to higher profile labels and players. the terry pollard set reflects those values and ideals perfectly. will your jaw drop in admiration over the playing? unlikely. however, the spirit of the whole thing. you can hear it - and i think you can feel it, too. that's what bethlehem is all about to me.
  10. well, that's nice information in return. i'm something of a mark murphy fan, so i'm likely to track that down. vielen dank!
  11. glad you found the information useful! 'ballads in blue' was recorded in 2004 (originally released 2005) and features edwin corzillius on bass and frits landesbergen on drums. the metropole session i've never seen...
  12. samples: 'when a man loves a woman'; http://snipurl.com/28qnui8 + 'nightwings'; http://snipurl.com/28qnumw.
  13. 'when a man loves a woman' is from 1968 (http://www.discogs.com/Louis-Van-Dyke-When-A-Man-Loves-A-Women/master/328572) and 'nightwings' is from 1981 (http://www.discogs.com/Louis-van-Dijk-Nightwings/release/5252934). both are delicious examples of the most tasteful sort of soft interplay and languid playing of the day. they're not hard charging or full of overstated virtuosity by any means. just the opposite. if you've heard the two burton titles mentioned, they're very informed by that understated elegance. obviously i'm a fan...
  14. those are promotional items that you would receive if you purchased the titles in store in japan. the box(es), which i presume feature a mosaic of the covers in the series, are simply to be folded and displayed so as to promote the series. no deep hidden meanings or usages here. enjoy! by the way, trio lovers (and lovers of ann burton's 'blue burton' and 'ballads & burton' - surely there are some folks hip to those here - i hope): do not miss the rare appearance of two louis van dijk sets; 'when a man loves a woman' and 'nightwings'.
  15. i'm really enjoying the sam most (and, yes, the pollard....). they both sound great, especially considering the pollard was a 10".
  16. I hate to disappoint you all, but you do realize all these Universal Italy sets (Dolphy, Rollins, et al) are housed in cardboard, right?
  17. i knew what you meant....
  18. whoa. now that's saying something. do you put it down to quality of the file or the hardware....?
  19. do you know what the file type was.....? FLAC 24/192, that's all I recall. ....and it rivaled a good shm pressing?
  20. do you know what the file type was.....?
  21. tread carefully, aftab. they be avant, from what i recall. surely about 180 degrees from 'two headed freap'... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZVjGohfTEk btw, these are european issues from one 'cool music' label. any obi strip or what have you would be simple inserts for that market. japanese they certainly are not....
  22. erwbol: i'm on it. new order for some of these, some bethlehems, and some new blue note shm's going out this evening. *maybe* i'll spring for the platinum shm of 'saxophone colossus'...
  23. erwbol - very interesting. is this observation through speakers or headphones? which make/model?
  24. since he doesn't seem to have stopped by, let me get in on the happy (belated?) birthday!
  25. i have two spares; an NAD C310 and a kenwood KR-3400, but neither of them really let me appreciate the detail of these issues as well as the 2270. so i've acquired a (marantz) 1060 that's on its way!
