i received this box for christmas. what a perfect way to survey an oeuvre like herbie's! i own most, but not all, of the material in one form or another except for the first trio record (which i'd heard, but never responded to) and 'monster' (which i was completely unfamiliar with). curious as to how bad could it be, i gave 'monster' a spin last weekend. putrid. never again... even 'magic windows' isn't *that* bad. has anyone commented on the wealth of alternate takes on 'the piano'?

horace's alzheimer's condition has been a widely known fact for years, has it not?

horace: regardless of where you are, know that we all love and appreciate you and how your art has enriched our lives. we'll never, ever forget you. i had the good fortune to see (and meet) horace twice. i guess he's the only blue note legend that i've ever personally met. once was at a club where he was playing in support of one of the impulse projects. i was with a friend who played in stan kenton's trombone section many moons ago. between sets, this friend engaged horace in a conversation. horance sat with us for about half an hour. initially the conversation was over time signatures but then it just went everywhere. his spirit, good nature, laugh, smile, and just sheer love really made a deep impression on me. the second meeting was, if i recall correctly, at a signing for his autobiography. again, he was equally affable and happy with life. these two experiences left me with no doubt that horace silver was/is a conscious and realized soul.

um, well, chicago and the eagles.... i'm gonna say no....

i've about 40 of them and i find the transfer and mastering to be uniformly excellent - and that's putting it mildly. that having been said, i don't have any of the titles that i recall "erwbol" not liking. that blue note LT series is another matter altogether. worst mastering of any japanese series i've *ever* collected. granted, it's only 30 years of collecting, but still. uniformly dreadful!

regardless of the dialect versus language distinction, is it possible for two nederlanders to not understand each other due to not speaking a shared language or are the differences more subtle?

i thought so! what i've read in english refers to them as languages, but i was certain they would be more dialects. i also find these things fun to learn and know about. for instance, i'm positive that each region and province has its own characteristics that differ - some greatly - and some subtly. and what a more neglected place to start than the netherlands!

well, all this has fired my curiosity about nederlander geography. i didn't realize that friesland (or fryslân) was one of twelve provinces to have its own language. so now i'm reading up on each province and what the primary characteristics of each may be. fascinating.
