not by a long shot. cavaet emptor...

exactly! it's a little more straight forward for 'odyssey of iska' because i know that master sounds glorious, so i'm expecting great things from the shm. 'depois do amor, o vazio' must sound beautiful... right, lon?

Do you mean the mastering of previous reissues or the recording? I know you like the music. i do, of course mean the mastering. i may well have a sub par transfer for all i know, but the one adjective that comes to mind for it is 'dull'. this session demands crisp clarity to enjoy each texture and nuance.

i was *never* content with it. at all. i became even less so after hearing an original (vinyl) pressing of it.... another one i really don't care for is 'total eclipse'. my shipment is still another week out. i knew i should have been on the ball and had a pre-order waiting for release day, but with something like 40 unopened japanese pressings sitting around i almost felt guilty adding to that stack. almost... oh - that hurts....

You mean this series? A fantastic, and hugely overlooked, Japanese reissue series. yes - that's it. wouldn't it be just like a series like this to take a historical look back, maybe? like me, you probably have them in one form or another but you want to have them in as close to a reference form as possible. just because i'm a nut for it, i'd be curious to see what SHM could bring to grant green's 'goin' west'. i highly doubt it'll be in this series, but stranger reissue decisions have been made. but one thing is for certain - they can't continue with many more installments before they begin to repeat material made available within the past 5 years or so.

you read right into my order. i missed the jones mosaic, so i'm making up for it where i can with this series.i passed on 'of peace and love' and will snag 'contrasts' next month as well. between the LA and LT series as well as all the other prior series (RVG, works, et al), how many other titles haven't been available on disc before? since this is blue note's 75th anniversary year, they may also go way back to the early years as that was a prior series that seems to have some and gone fairly quickly over a decade ago, meaning that those titles haven't been available for some time. ah - thanks for reminding me of that! i *must* pick that up. it was my first dolphy as a teenager and the title by which i judge all others...

that's good to hear. it's on its way to me, along with 9 others; shorter: 'odyssey of iska' turrentine: 'the look of love' pearson: 'now hear this' wilson: 'on broadway' hill: 'grass roots', jones: 'polycurrents' and 'genesis' donaldson: 'cosmos' humphrey: 'flute in'

nope. only 'rip, rig, and panic' and 'beautiful edith' among his non-atlantic work have (however, a spate of the atlantic material has and/or will be by the end of february). http://snipurl.com/28hkffb

so how are john and george, anyway.....? sorry - i couldn't resist.

at a 1000 yen each, no less. i just about snagged a couple a year or so ago at nearly twice the price. i'm glad i was patient...

and the coverart gets worse with each installment... ick!

or Shirley The Woman.....

apparently not....

i don't suppose there's anything remotely approaching the replication of original artwork is there? well, other than maybe a few low-res copy and pastes included in the accompanying booklet. fresh sound usually goes to lengths to extrapolate any real visual connection to the original when doing their thing.

well rounded lot - nicely done! myself, i'm tough on piano trios. that being said, i need to give 'love gloom cash love' (what a title, really....) a chance. now that i think about it, this isn't so bad either... i know you know it's identical to the bethlehem artwork... or did you mean 'corny' as in it looks as if he's sitting in a cornfield?
-
which ones did you order, clunky? and can i not get some love for 'california suite'? it's really a great date. forgive the uk parlaphone artwork....(!)
-
i seriously hope they reissue mel torme's 'california suite'. it's a masterpiece....'porgy and bess' has been, but if i never hear another version of it it'll be too soon.

the dexter must be next on your list. that is one swinging record....!
-
mjzee; thanks - an excellent, timely suggestion for me! are you using these on a desktop or laptop? have you upgraded your sound card or are you running stock?

i'd have to respectfully disagree with you on that score. i think the tour diary is some of the most insightful and downright gut busting hilarity i've ever read by any musician, period. in fact, i loved it so much i think i'll have to splash out for the audiobook as read by fagen himself. can you imagine....?
