no kidding! the amp was sounding so sweet, too. after 'the all seeing eye' and 'on broadway', i was deeply into dizzy reece's 'asia minor' when a racket came bellowing from the speakers. i think it surely a loose ground somewhere. it took a good 90 minutes to start, so it's going to take the tech a while to replicate the problem...

my 2270 went kaput again before i could get to 'iska'....

i take it it's not in mono (as the cover there notes).....? -
i've said this before, but my best recommendation is connecting with a (private/non-chain) japanese shop, a la hiroshi / early records. many do business outside of japan. snag a copy of jazz life, jazz japan, or jazz critique and there are usually several advertising. also, 'grand stan'; 1: http://tower.jp/item/3246723/%E3%82%B0%E3%83%A9%E3%83%B3%E3%83%89%E3%83%BB%E3%82%B9%E3%82%BF%E3%83%B3%EF%BC%9C%E5%AE%8C%E5%85%A8%E9%99%90%E5%AE%9A%E7%94%9F%E7%94%A3%E7%9B%A4%EF%BC%9E 2; http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/artist_Stan-Levey_000000000049491/item_Grand-Stan_227658

sonically or in content....? i was finally able to listen to 'on broadway' and 'grass roots' on my freshly serviced 2270 last night. i liked what i heard - detail, musicality, and at least on these two titles, an excellent soundstage. order #2 being placed this evening...

unavailable from 'cd japan', perhaps, but not out of print by a long shot... we've started a trend, lon!

I find it funny that OOP albums are almost always over-rated. I remember being unimpressed when this was first released, and my feelings about it haven't changed much since. But the price sure has gone up --- almost as much as the perception. +1 (with an exclamation mark!) - i find most of it sterile and overrated in a very 80's neo-bop a la marsalis mode (but hey, that's just my mileage at this particular juncture). that after i too found the proverbial 'tokyo live' needle in the haystack of commerce.

...and speaking of little feat, wouldn't it be nice to have a good version of robert palmer's sneakin' sally through the alley? surely no little feat fan here is without that masterpiece...
-
i was thinking the 'original album series' wasn't as well regarded as these new warner/rhino series. i'm glad i snapped up the little feat mini-lp series. they shine! but there is the matter of that 'hotcakes and outtakes' disc...
-
how's the mastering on the original album series? surely better than the original transfers...
-
i know what you mean for sure, but there's only two non-george recordings included here and they're pretty happening. after 'representing the mambo' they really dropped off my radar (although i have three released after it....).
-
nice. i snagged the catalog on japanese mini lp's a few years ago. i'll bet they use the same mastering for this set just as they did for the ry cooder set.
-
i'm approaching reissue atrophy here. i haven't even started on this series, other than to earmark 'outward bound'. i already have many of them on mini lp from a series many years ago... however, i've never had 'conception', which is really a collecting faux pas, so that goes on the list. as does 'hope meets foster', james moody's 'hi fi party' (after all, who doesn't like a hi-fi party....?), maybe the barbara lea (?), and, that's the problem: every single title is really worthy of a place in good collection.

well put, sir!

LF: Terry Pollard Quintet

we may account for all terry pollard reissue titles sold outside of japan...
-
between that endorsement, the video, and the cover (not to mention the group) i'm all over it.
-
i have all the turrentine lt series reissues and, take it for what it's worth, but the duplicate material sounds far worse than 'bluish bag'. however, i make no apologies for tending towards a clear (some say bright) sound. the lt series, and i have about 15 of them, sound uniformly muffled. fortunately i don't suffer from any sort of fatigue when hearing clarity of recorded sound.

i think i'm going all in on an order of some size (10-15 titles). the mcghee makes the list - and i want the stan levey 'plays the compositions of cooper, holman, and giuffre'. i know absolutely nothing about the terry pollard (a female pianist) set, but that cover gives me a good vibe - and i see it's a quintet with don fagerquist... btw, i did pick up 'this time the drum's on me' and 'daddy plays the horn' while in japan recently - and i love them. but i've not really heard any 'bad' japanese bethlehem issues. i'll do some reseach on the personnel of the most sides and proceed from there. bethlehem and flute go together in my tastes (i do have the 'fraternity' date featuring most and mann) and i may have mann's 'love and the weather'.
-
you're welcome! so you recommend all four (?) most sides....? how about that mcghee? i've seen it for years, but have never picked it up. at 1000 yen, it's kind of now or never.
