  1. Could one of you guys with the possibly defective disc 6 rip a copy (WAV or MP3 file) of the section of track 1 where you hear the problem, and make it available for some of the rest of us to hear and compare to our discs? That could clear up whether this truly is a defect in your disc, and not just something on the source tape. Since many of us received "European" Farlow sets without a problem on Disc 6, it would probably be worth returning your set if it is defective to get another one.
  2. I'm too busy looking at flat wound jazz guitar strings on the internet. B-) Someone told me to do that.
  3. Well, I think Mosaic is still responsible for producing it, even though it's marketed by Universal/Verve. Mosaic's name is all over the CDs and booklet. It's not like Mosaic licensed the master tapes to Universal, who then remastered and did who knows what to them. In fact, it's the opposite--Universal licensed the tapes to Mosaic, who then remastered them and produced the sets, including the ones Universal then distributes. So even though Mosaic didn't retail the "European" sets, it did produce them and may have answers for these types of questions about those sets. But you still don't have the huevos.
  4. Jeff, I'm now wondering if this is something in the original source tape that is only apparent when played back on certain equipment. As you and I discussed earlier, these "European" sets were in fact manufactured in the U.S., presumably at the same place and time as the regular Mosaic sets, so there's no reason to believe they should have--as a group--manufacturing defects that the U.S. Mosaics don't have. Maybe it's time for someone to call Mosaic.
  5. Amazon will want you to return the whole set so they can send you a new one, but they'll pay the return shipping cost.
  6. No scratchy noise on disc 6/track 1 here--but then again, our football season's been over for a while. If you bought the set from Caiman via Amazon, contact Caiman directly and they'll take it back in exchange for a new one.
  7. Aha! Maybe the noise is in--or on--your head!
  8. It is...just appeared yesterday. One thing I noticed on the label is that it says '22-bit remastering'. I don't think I've ever seen anything with 22-bit......is this just flat out wrong? 22 bit is for amateurs. I'll raise you 2 bits and call:
  9. BTW, I'm also hearing--through the Sennheiser HD 600's--a lot of "white noise" on track 1 of Disc 5 ("Isn't It Romantic"). If that noise is similar to what you're hearing on track 1 of Disc 6, it's definitely hiss and distortion in the original source tape.
  10. Besides normal tape hiss (which I think is what you're hearing when, e.g., only the piano is playing at the beginning of track 1), and brushes on a drumhead, you may also be hearing this (from the discography in the set booklet): FWIW, I also listened to this track on a pair of Sennheiser headphones (HD 600's).
  11. If you're talking about what I think you are, I don't think it's a defect in the disc. It's in the original source tape, and is most noticeable at the very beginning of the track when just the piano is playing. If the disc were defective, it wouldn't play at all, or would skip or repeat with the tell-tale clicking noise that CDs make when they skip or get stuck.
  12. Just finished all of Disc 6 (also from Caiman) again--no problems. What problems has anyone else been having?
  13. It is...just appeared yesterday. One thing I noticed on the label is that it says '22-bit remastering'. I don't think I've ever seen anything with 22-bit......is this just flat out wrong? MassMan With Golden Arm, Yes, you did indeed warn me. B-) Must be a typo--doesn't it have to be a multiple of 8 (at least with currently used technology)?
  14. Do you have a repeating knock for the first few seconds of track one? I don't. I'm listening to Disc 6 again now--no problems yet.
  15. It's funny that you mention that one. I have it, and, , that's about the only one that doesn't have any defects. Beats me. The stupid billboard cover doesn't fall apart when you open the box? You must have one of the few they actually glued.
  16. Read what??? You're imagining things.
  17. What's wrong with Disc 6? No problems with mine from Caiman (at least the first time I listened through). I've returned a defective CD (not from the Farlow set) to Caiman before, and they sent a brand-new replacement. You just may have to send them an email in a couple of weeks reminding them to send the new one (their return label is Media Mail COD, so who knows when they actually receive the returns). I did that, and they sent the new one immediately thereafter.
  18. Why not? It obviously can't be used to store CDs. Looks like it's still wrapped? No surprise. Don't get me started on those incredibly crummy Verve box sets. Godawful, including the new Granz sessions box which looks nice, but is idiotic in its conception. It already had fingerprints before I even unwrapped it, and it's a pain in the neck to take the whole thing apart to listen to a CD. Sucks! Not to mention the self-destructive JATP box--I was involved in a thread about that on the AAJ site.

  20. That's nice. But what I REALLY like is the idea of having a few French wine crates-- presumably full of bottles of French wine--in the basement . . .er, um . . . I mean the wine cellar.
  21. A BoSox fan in NYC has more than one dirty little secret.
  22. Now THAT'S impressive. B-)
  23. He's currently vacationing in Atlantis (lousy internet service on the ocean floor).
  24. If you're ever in NYC, take your daughters to "American Girl Place." It takes up several floors of some of the priciest real estate in the world (on 5th Ave.). You can learn more about it here. There's also one in Chicago. It's worth visiting from an adult's perspective just to marvel at what has to be one of the seven wonders of the marketing world. Maybe you can make a deal with your daughters and spend a few hours there in exchange for a few hours at the Village Vanguard.
