  1. Thanks to Ghost of Miles' resuscitation of this thread today, all the prior and subsequent glowing reviews, and a listen to the samples on Amazon, I just ordered the Hindsight Jubilee set. The samples sound phenomenal. Can't wait to get it. Thanks guys.
  2. I don't think so. The info I've seen (here) just refers to the Dave Brubeck Quartet.
  3. Mozart also wrote some great chamber music for flute (quartets, etc.) you may want to check out. And then there's his phenomenal clarinet quintet (featured in the final episode of the TV version of M*A*S*H). You really can't go wrong with anything by Mozart.
  4. Also from the Classical era, I'd highly recommend this CD, which contains some great music for orchestra and flute by Franz Joseph Haydn, and by his less famous younger brother Michael Haydn:
  5. From the Classical era (between Baroque and Romantic), Mozart wrote some wonderful music for flute and orchestra, including flute concertos and a very nice concerto for flute and harp. I have both of these 3-disc sets of Mozart wind concertos (including great concertos for flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, and horn): I'd recommend either, or both!
  6. Sounds like a great show; wish I could make it! Mark Southwest has some great fares from Indianapolis to Philly. And you could arrange to take some photos of Dave and Marian--I'll carry your equipment (and I'll bet we could get Alan Lankin to help). If it were a weekend I would seriously consider it; the mid week gig is tough for me to do. I appreciate the offer to schlepp my equipment. I may be visiting Philly this summer to take in a ball game, maybe we can hook up! Definitely! And maybe the Phillies will actually be winning! And as far as the offer to schlepp your equipment, I figured it was my best shot at actually getting to meet Dave and Marian.
  7. I went to Wharton. We sort of figured this out on our own. B-)

  9. Gives a whole new meaning to the expression "splitting headache."
  10. Oh, OK. For a minute there I thought it was something to be concerned about.
  11. Did anyone notice that Week 1's "Robin Hood" is "Bozo Approved"? I know I'd buy a lot more CDs if they had that seal on them.
  12. Why do you have a giant red dot in your front yard?
  13. Probably cause it was signed by emo phillips? Now that WOULD be priceless.

Thanks for the sage advice, Londalf. I made the mistake of getting the Smell-o-Vision edition of "Free For All"--had to air out the house for WEEKS.
  15. Dammit! Someone left Atlantis off the list again! How soon they forget.

Speaking of sound, how DOES the sound of the "Night in Tunisia" RVG compare to the earlier CD? A similar question about the "Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers" RVG is pending in another thread, and there are a few of us (maybe 3 or 4 total?) in the world who would like to know how the actual sound compares before "upgrading" to RVGs, 20-bit K2s, Sense-o-Round, Cinerama, Smell-o-Vision . . . .
  17. I hope I'm still doing ANYTHING at their age.
  18. Just got tickets for this concert at Verizon Hall of the Kimmel Center, home of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Sort of a '63 Carnegie Hall redux? Should be great to see both of these legends (Brubeck and McPartland) in one show. Anyone else going?
  19. Looks sorta like a police lineup, although the Broadway would be at a distinct disadvantage if it were.
  20. In fairness to our cake-loving friends, we should concede that something that's "easy as [eating] pie" would also be "a piece o' cake."
  21. Hmmmmmm . . . . . . . and all this time I thought the Bronx was in New York City.
  22. Are we letting politics intrude on this question? Well, to quote Malcolm out of context, that's "as American as cherry pie" ! You know I don't like Cherry pie Che. Isn't the expression "as American as APPLE pie" anyway? I think the cherry gets thrown in there because of the apocryphal story of the young George Washington chopping down a cherry tree.
  23. Stupid question: what's with the "Sir"?
  24. Obviously, if you're really talented with a fork, you go for pie. Those more insecure about their forking ability and stamina, will go for the cake every time.
