  1. I have the Retrieval set. Has anyone ever compared that one to the Challenge set?
  2. Sorry to spoil the party, but I don't find the remastering of the 10CD-box all that great: the higher frequencies boost is a bit too much for my ears... (Same with the big Columbia/Sony Armstrong box; I prefer the J.R.T. Davies-remastered JSP Armstrong set).
  3. The set was remastered by Dan Hersch and Bill Inglot. Sounds promising.
  4. who's instead of whose
  5. Possessive pronouns: there's instead of theirs it's instead of its
  6. Including the unreleased material?
  7. My pet hate is still Fuschia instead of Fuchsia. The flower was named after 16th Century botanist Dr Fuchs.
  8. OK, I guess I should have mentioned that. The Birth of Soul box includes mostly studio recordings.
  9. The Birth of Soul box only included Charles' R&B sides, the new box will include everything he recorded for Atlantic, such as the jazz sides. ← Well, not everything. Ray returned to the lable for four albums in the 1970s. I have the first three. They're all a mixed bag, but when they're good, they're very good. The first one, True To Life, is easily the strongest (there's a version of "How Long Has This Been Going On" on there that is Sesert Island Material). The following two are much more variable/erratic, and by the tiem the fourth one came out, I decided to pass. ← I meant everything in the 1952-1959 period mentioned in my first post. Apparently that wasn't clear.

  11. Short reply (haven't got much time): Get the Mance Lipscomb while you can, it's up there with his best Arhoolie recordings. Also highly recommended: Percy Mayfield - His Tangerine and Atlantic Sides (out of print) Loudon Wainwright III - The Atlantic Recordings (out of print) Jackie DeShannon - Jackie... Plus (a personal favorite of mine) Doug Sahm - The Genuine Texas Groover
  12. Happy birthday.
  13. Several Vanguard, Mercury, Riverside and Pacific Jazz LPs: Dave Burns - Dave Burns - Vanguard Dave Burns - Warming Up - Vanguard Bill English - Bill English - Vanguard Billy Mitchell - A Little Juicy - Mercury Ron Jefferson - Love Lifted Me - Pacific Jazz Lennie McBrowne - Lennie McBrowne & the Four Souls - Pacific Jazz Lennie McBrowne - Eastern Lights - Riverside
  14. Just saw this on another board: Rhino will release an 8CD-set with Ray Charles' entire Atlantic Records catalog on September 20, to commemorate what would have been his 75th birthday. The title of the box is Ray Charles Pure Genius: The Complete Atlantic Recordings (1952-1959) and it includes nearly nine hours of music and 165 tracks, highlighted by a disc of 27 unreleased or rare cuts. CDUniverse has a tracklisting. Their pre-ordering price is $111.47. According to CDUniverse "PURE GENIUS comes packaged in a '50s-inspired record-player case and contains a bonus DVD featuring live concert footage and an exclusive interview with producer Ahmet Ertegun. Liner Note Authors: Ahmet Ertegun; David Ritz. Recording information: 1952 - 1959."
  15. Vacation maybe? She was last active here on August 1, and her last post dates from June 25.
  16. Sorry to thread crap, but what is a "weiner"? ← oops, it is a typo wiener ← Err... Sorry, I still don't understand. According to Merriam-Webster it's a wienerwurst: Main Entry: wie·ner Pronunciation: 'wE-n&r, 'wE-nE also 'wi-nE Function: noun Etymology: short for wienerwurst It just occurred to me, do you mean "whiner"? ← sorry for the confusion - I do mean wiener in this case, slang for something that is bland, dull or flavorless I am refering to the Oscar Meyer variety of course ← I see. Thanks for the explanation!

  19. That's great news, congratulations!
  20. Time to bring this up again There's been a lot of "copywrite" instead of copyright lately...
  21. My thoughts exactly.
  22. What are you all complaining about?? Gas is €1.40/litre here at the moment, = $1.72/litre = $6.53/gallon at today's exchange rate of €1 = $1.23! Glad I don't have a car anymore.
  23. I'm (still) having the same problems, both on Opera and MSIE6...
  24. The problem addressed in that thread still exists, and the board has been and still is extremely slow these last few days.
