  1. I've been listening to this album for a little over two months now. Clean Feed has been releasing so many albums lately that I have a difficult time keeping up. This album is a little over a year old now, if I'm not mistaken. I know there are a handful of Broo fans here, as well as folks who share an appreciation for Nilssen-Love. This thing ROCKS. It is heavy on the bottom end with Lane's bass sometimes plugged in through some reedy distortion (Alfama, Short Stop). He and Nilssen-Love are really hooked up. Broo is outrageous and Vandermark plays very well. I still don't really understand the flack around here, but whatever. I am not at all familiar with Lane. I got this album for the words MAGNUS, BROO, PAAL, NILSSEN-LOVE. His playing is very impressive. I see that Lane studied with Braxton AND Leo Smith at Wesleyan and CalArts respectively. Doesn't Mark Dresser work at CalArts as well? This is some head-bobbing shit most of the time (some solo statements to give Nilssen-Love's four arms a rest I suppose), and its recorded in a lively club as well, which adds to the fun.
  2. Niko? Dare I ask, what's your living situation these days? This may be a new thread... I've had roommate situations in the past, but... Niko?
  3. You really ought to check out Fight The Big Bull on clean feed. Let me know what you think!
  4. I think he posts occasionally under at least two different names. ???
  5. Titles for paps: Sting Ray And The Beginning Of Time - Part I Sting Ray And The Beginning Of Time - Part II Sting Ray And The Beginning Of Time - Part III (Psycho-tropic Electric Eel Dream) Sting Ray And The Beginning Of Time - Part IV Black Sun Cosmic Tomes For Sleep Walking Lovers - Part I Cosmic Tomes For Sleep Walking Lovers - Part II Cosmic Tomes For Sleep Walking Lovers - Part III Cosmic Tomes For Sleep Walking Lovers - Part IV (Fifteen Ways Towards A Finite Universe) Cosmic Tomes For Sleep Walking Lovers - Part V
  6. I hadn't thought twice about that "storyline" paps. I don't think you would even take it into consideration once you had heard the music. May be an homage to Saturnalia?
  7. I saw Exploding Star Orchestra "rehearsing" during last year's Chicago Jazz Festival with Bill Dixon, but missed the performance. Most of the time, Bill Dixon was going around the band and thinking of people who stood out in his mind on each musician's respective instrument. They did some improvisational exercises as well, but the majority of the time I was in the hall, they were resting. I recently picked up the live recording of this group released on Thrill Jockey a few months ago and have only had the chance to listen once. The group is coming at the date from a much different angle than the original piece. Has anyone been checking this date out? I'll probably listen again today.
  8. I got this over the weekend. I love the feeling of the first tune.
  9. Searching for further information on A Fox Can Be Hungry, I came across this: Umbrella Music Festival Looks like a good time.
  10. Any more info on the CD? Unless a second album with the same title and line-up is coming out, the CD Release party is for this thread's original topic. This could be worth lugging some recording gear in for. Especially the second night.
  11. I like Hatwich, from what I've heard. Great bounce. I'm imagining this band could be right up my alley. Love the instrumentation. Herndon plays well in the Exploding Star Orch. I haven't heard him elsewhere though. Aside from Tortoise of course.
  12. I just listened to this album for the first time last night. There was a lot to like. I ha to follow up with a couple of Keefe Jacksons afterward and am now looking forward to hearing Roll Down. We were in town last year for the festival and caught Rosaly with Fast Citizens twice. I'm a fan. I really like his style. The one that I hear the most growth in has been Jeff Parker. To me, he just keeps getting deeper and deeper into the music. How do the Chicago folks feel about Parker's guitar playing?
  13. Fusion, as I understand it, has historically been regarded as a melding rock and jazz.., (with occasional hubris and Spinal Tappish grandiosity). And in recent years I see the term being used with 'fused' styles of other genres and jazz. HillybillyDiscoJazzPolka Fusion and stuff.... really. I believe a third classification has been introduced to fit your final example... jam bands.
  14. I came across this stuff last month in a search for Lester Bowie. A friend of mine also came across it, by chance, in a search for Olu Dara. Another friend came across it by chance searching for Taj Mahal. Everyone had dl'd the Ishmael Reed Conjure album. I picked up a couple of tracks from other albums here and there. Thanks for the rec's Vint!
  15. They would have been in my guess!
  16. that's great! Do you know what tunes they are playing?
  17. LIVE MUSIC ARCHIVE
  18. Sorry... I'm not in the market for another burps and farts record.
  19. Is this supposed to be Organissimo in an alternate universe? If so, I motion that we throw out instrumentation ideas, and they record tunes tunes from past albums (down and dirty) using said instrumentation.
  20. If you like Tori Amos, you should check out Organissimo. Here is their website: www.organissimo.org
  21. The sarcasm was intended. I catch your drift though. He's probably a good guy, just doesn't understand internet etiquette. You know as well as I do that he is welcome to engage in discussion. He has a three page thread here. I even started an offshoot thread after checking Garaj Mahal out again on archive.org! I'd say it is pretty indicative of the general tone of the board. You ask questions, you get answers. You make statements, you get comments. And emoticons. Pages of them. Let's talk about The Garaj Mahal!
  22. I was just recommending an under-rated organ trio to the fellow based on his taste. He responded by calling us morons. WOW
  23. I thought we all caught "Gentile" Giant...
  24. Of interest: Animal Collective has a handful of live recordings up. I never did warm to the latest album Strawberry Jam, but liked Feels a lot, along with a few EPs that I have from around that time, and still enjoy Panda Bear's solo album.
  25. The computer that I use as my server for the Squeezebox is in the shop for the week. Last night, after reading the Likestowatch thread, I decided to stream a few shows from Live Music Archive. The amount of live recordings up there can be overwhelming if you don't know exactly what you are in the mood to hear. I did a search and couldn't find a specific thread with recommendations from the knowledgeable members of organissimo. Those of you who use this free streaming service, what bands/shows do you recommend? Leftover Salmon is an old favorite and always fun to listen to. Last night, at random, I ended up listening to a Bela Fleck and the Flecktones show from 1991. I had forgotten how fun they once were! Getting away from "jam bands", what do you guys like at Live Music Archive?
