  1. Living in "New Jack City" may explain some of your exposure to "victimhood".
  2. The link does not contain the details I was looking for, other than to mention the "finding of rare recordings".. There is no mention of the sources for these recordings. I was hoping that your familiarity with the British jazz scene would allow you to answer my question easily.
  3. Does the cd consist only of previously unreleased recordings? If so, I wonder why Reel didn't do what they usually do --- release chunks of unreleased stuff artist by artist.
  4. You were never mugged? I was. You never had your apartment broken into? Many, many people in my building and my parents' building did; the only reason I didn't is that I put bars on all my windows that could be accessed by the fire escape (it looked like a prison) and reinforcements on the inside of my apartment door, including a police lock. In 1977, the battery in my parents' car was stolen about once a month. And, of course, I lived through the blackout of 1977. I saw many, many small businesses looted. The chaos of NYC during that time cannot be overstated. Ignoring for the moment the slanted rantings of one Mr. Lowe (who was from Long Island, btw), where did you and your parents live? Although it's part of this board's credo, hyperbole will get you nowhere with this lifelong New Yorker. OY VE. Cool out, man from suburgatory!
  5. Continuing along those lines, one could argue that Giuliani obviously benefitted from appearing to be a major improvement over Dinkins. This was not, btw, a difficult task. Giuliani was a DA who should've stayed a DA. Don't get me started on the obvious conflict stemming from a billionaire holding such a high political office (being mayor of a city like NY may be viewed as sitting higher than Governor in most other states) now.
  6. Can you say "corporate jazz clubs"? If Rudy were around in the 50s and 60s, there would have been no 5 Spot, or Slugs, or Fillmore East, or countless other places. It's a common misconception that Rudy "turned the city around". He was clearly only interested in himself. Koch had character, and he could stand up to the tough fight. Giuliani was a bully. I was there and saw it all first-hand. NYC has lost much of its character. It all hit me about 7 years ago as I was sitting in a swanky restaurant on the lower east side (home of Tompkins Square Park, mind you) paying $40 a plate for mediocre food. I am a lifelong New Yorker to THIS point. Believe it or not, I've never seen a handgun up close. Never been shot at, never been mugged, never fell victim to any of the abuse (real or imagined) that the big city supposedly had to offer. New York didn't need Rudy. Rudy needed New York. On the other hand, NYC DID need a mayor like Ed Koch who lifted the city's morale when it was at an all-time low. Perspective is always different from a distance.
  7. Lots of stuff being tossed about as gospel -- ironically by people who didn't grow up in NYC. Anyone who was there knows that Rudy did NOT turn NYC around. He was the beginning of gentrification, and the "Tokyoization" of Times Square. You couldn't have met a bigger prick on the political stage. Koch almost singlehandedly saved the city from bankruptcy. If that ain't "turnaround", I don't know what is.
  8. You're unique. I'll give you that.
  9. True dat. Ignorance, jealousy, hyperbole and tongue twisting to hide what one doesn't know abounds here in spades. Hey Jim, we here in NY got plenty of that there Tums heroin you were pontificating about yesterday. Just let me know if you need any to get you by. K? And most of the people who live here know how dangerous it is! Just put yer head down and walk away. You're making yourself look foolish.
  10. Don't forget Jeff Beck, Led Zeppelin, and ECM! Bet your ass! No Texas, though. Only people who have never been think it's dangerous. Make up yer mind! If the antiseptic conditions detract from the game, why is it "ridiculous" that the Super Bowl will be held at Met Life Stadium next year? Or is this yet another weary, yet veiled (barely) dig at New York? Well, for one thing, the fans will have to brave the cold , too. That might affect ticket sales and hotel stays [eateries would suffer, as well]. What I don't get is why is California not a regular destination for the Super Bowl? The weather is reasonable, tourism abounds and the fans will most surely stick around for longer. Seems to me like a win-win. You mean tourism doesn't abound in NYC? I can personally guarantee that ticket sales, eateries and hotels will NOT suffer. It is the "center of the universe", after all. Get real, Tim! I guess you feel that all jazz should've been recorded in California too, huh? Fact is, without NY, all you guys would be discussing is New Orleans, Satch, trad jazz, Chicago, Dick Bock and all those Mulligan/Baker recordings. NYC has plenty of tourism...in the Sping and Summer. I don't know of too many folks who plan vacations or whatnot to the snowbelt in the Winter. Just sayin'.... As to Jazz, there was this thing called the West Coast Cool as I recall; it gained a fair amount of noteriety at the time. NYC is a wonderful place [so I'm told by my wife's side of the family] just too dang cold around Super Bowl time. Proof that ig'nance is not always bliss. Tourism exists here year round. As I stated before, makes sense to have a cold weather game in cold weather once in a while. Keeps it real.

  13. Why is the Stupid Bowl taking place in NY ridiculous? Football's a cold weather sport -- why not hold the flagship game in cold weather once in a while? Would you rather they hold it in Cleveland?
  14. My point was that these are NOT studio sessions that were left in the can. Unless Manfred severely changes his way of thinking, I wouldn't expect to see "unreleased" sessions ala Columbia, Blue Note, and pretty much every other label out there.
  15. Again, these are live sessions.
  16. Have you considered that there might not be any in the can to release? Each label recorded differently, and has a different mindset as to releasing every last note. Who's to say which is the "correct" way to do things? Blue Note had many albums left over because of varying sets of circumstances which may not be in place for a label like ECM. It's not as black and white as you may think. In any case, it's difficult to argue with ECM's methodology and track record --- they've been going strong for longer than Blue Note ever did. Still doesn't mean there aren't sessions in the can there. You (and I, and we) simply don't know. You're right. I'm just relaying what I've heard. But even if there are, it doesn't mean that Manfred will release them. There's no use in worrying about what you can't control.

  18. What relation does what one record label does have to what another does?
  19. Eicher doesn't really do the "sitting in the can" thing.
  20. Bottom line: Anyone who ordered this from overseas will have to wait for it. Not always worth the $1.98 in savings...........
  21. Dusty Groove has carried MCN releases in the past. I emailed them about the Miles Davis release yesterday. One of their buyers replied that MCN has gone out of business, and that he is trying to find another contact for this release. I found it weird that MCN would release something this important and THEN go out of business. I guess this would explain why it's not even found on the Euro Amazon sites.
  22. I would've expected you to check out the 3 cd Jim Hall Artist Share release. For me, jazz guitar may not get better than this! Someday I will! I initially hesitated at the price, but I soon found out that it was worth its weight in gold..........perhaps more than most cheaper things I bought last year.

  24. I don't think so, but then again, the Swiss label TCB has declared that the Miles Davis Zurich 1960 concert is seeing its FIRST OFFICIAL release on their label. As everyone knows, Jazz Unlimited (a sub label of Storyville) put it out years ago. So maybe we're giving Storyville too much credit???
