  1. I don't know the Scandi site, but here's another Japanese collector's site. Unfortunately there's a lot of oblique shots, but still a great resource. http://sekihei.hp.infoseek.co.jp/backnumber.htm
  2. This may be on the radar already, but it's about as good as it gets for album art (front and back), with a ton of DSM. http://www.gokudo.co.jp/Record/10inRec/index.htm
  3. I'm happily set up with a Radio Shack 9v preamp, but has anybody tried this option? http://www.amazon.com/Ion-iTTUSB-Turntable...9652&sr=8-1
  4. I got in to him through his work with Brötzmann, which led to a ton of other great discoveries. Great thing is that there are so many quality tapers around, and the guy never sits still. I get new stuff almost weekly, and I dig it all. Dime seems to be the best place for shows, but if somebody else knows about more please share! I also would recommend the Alchemia set. Even without the killer packaging it's great stuff. You know, if you're a philistine...
  5. My apologies if this has already been posted, but there's an absolutely smoking Quintet gig posted at Dime: http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=110797 A little over 3gb download, and I'll be seeding for another week or so. _______________________________________________________ Ken Vandermark Quintet - Poznan, Poland, Nov 20, 2005 DVD (PAL) Ken Vandermark, bs, cl Dave Rempis, reeds Kent Kessler, b Fred Lonberg-Holm, cello Jim Daisy, dr sorry, no setlist, please help if you can identify the tunes TT: 1:14:37 Source: Digital Satellite -> raw data to HDD, > ProjectX > MPEG2Schnitt > TMPGEnc DVD Author > Video_ts; audio is 2 channel MP2@384 (!) 6. Shapiro's "Midnight Minyan" is a real corker, too.
  7. Ken Vandermark has it on his site as well. Very sad. http://www.kenvandermark.com/
  8. If this has been covered, I apologize. http://blogs.chicagoreader.com/post-no-bil...parent-suicide/
  9. I use a Radio Shack 9v Phono preamp and Roxio CD Spin Doctor straight into my G5. Define the tracks (if needed, it's got an auto setting), send the tracks to Toast for burning or iTunes. I don't use any of the Spin Doctor clean up or eq, and I'm very happy with the results.
  10. I wouldn't worry too much, since if you're listening at "office levels" you're not going to be pushing much bass. You may want to baffle the walls around it just for the sake of politeness, however, as it can move some air. I use mine at home, with some cheap sub-less Advents or some such at work, so I can't answer to well... I do recommend them though.
  11. I've got the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 and am very happy.
  12. I've got a lot of Enoch Light/Command stuff, and the 35mm does indeed sound the best - gimmick or not.
  13. KKJZ recently switched to HD... could this have anything to do with it? It seems to be a fairly recent occurrence, though I haven't really been tracking it. I was under the impression that satellite was more "self contained". Obviously I know nothing about it, and thanks to all for the info.
  14. Jazztrain: That's what I was after. Thanks for doing the legwork... Indestructible: I thought I was losing it too. Wonder what's happening in those areas?
  15. This is a general question, but I've included some location specifics for anybody in the LA area... Every day when driving to (5am) and from (3pm) work and listening to 88.1 fm, I get some "bleed" from Howard Stern's satellite broadcast. Usually only a few seconds and always in the same two areas - Westwood/Sepulveda Pass and 405/118 interchange. I don't know much of anything about broadcasting, but is it because 88.1 is the first available fm frequency, and satellite broadcasts somewhere below that? I'll get a bit of static, 3 to 5 seconds of yammering, then static, then back to kjazz. What the hell? Thanks.
  16. Thanks Jim. Checked around a bit and it seems to be cross-platform - at least the hardware end - as it's carried by various Mac retailers. I've got no complaints with my RS pre, but if anybody's got a first hand review I'd love to hear it. Thanks.
  17. Does anybody know if the Inport can be used in OS X? I know the bundled software is Windows, but does the device work as an independent input/preamp? I use Spin Doctor and a Radio Shack 9v phono amp to record now. Thanks.
  18. Too bad about being an alcoholic, but when you start spouting off like that to the cops , booze is only one of your problems. A .12 is obviously illegal, but it's not all that drunk. That nonsense was just below the surface the whole time. It'll be nice to hear how this is all spun by the radio talkers that held him up as a beacon of hope that all of Hollywood should follow, especially with current events the way they are...
  19. Unfortunately there's not much surprise left in The Onion, but their absolute peak is the "Our Dumb Century" book. Probably the only book that's ever made me laugh out loud, and it doesn't have the built in expiration date of their "hip" topical stuff now. Here's a pretty succinct review from Amazon: _______________________________________________________________________ One-hundred front pages cover what claim to be editions of The Onion from 1900 to 1999. The hilarious headlines parody great and small events of the century that was. From the moon walk and great depression to Archduke Ferdinand emerging alive and well from his vacation right after the end of WWI (a thinking person's macabre joke there) the writers who created these would-be newspapers have authored some brilliantly-conceived satire that's delightful to read. The language, tone and even the typefaces are perfect for the respective eras that are being teased. Pay attention to the fine print and advertisements in these papers, there's a lot off the beaten track, too. Oh, and this is most definitely NOT for the easily offended or the non-literate. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/060980461...8405564?ie=UTF8
  20. Hey Lon! The JRVGs were so hit or miss, I'd hope some would be re-remastered (if they were touched at all the first time). Upgrading from a domestic version is no big deal, but replacing a JRVG is a little harder to swallow. Guess I'll just have to spin them all and add a sound rating to my matrix. Goddamn jazz...
  21. I've got three of these (Trompeta, Congregation and Spring) on JRVG. I'm sure this has been discussed before, but are they using the same remasters for the domestic RVGs? And yeah, MG, The Congregation smokes. -van
  22. Thanks for posting that. Man... what a doll.
  23. I'm sure he's gone to a better place... Next! ---------------------------------------------------------- http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/07/05/D8ILSUMG0.html Enron Founder Kenneth Lay Dies at 64 Jul 05 10:39 AM US/Eastern Email this story By KRISTEN HAYS AP Business Writer HOUSTON Enron Corp. founder Kenneth Lay, who was convicted of helping perpetuate one of the most sprawling business frauds in U.S. history, has died of a heart attack in Colorado. He was 64. A secretary at his church and another secretary for his lead criminal lawyer, Michael Ramsey, both confirmed the death. Lay, who lived in Houston, frequently vacationed in Colorado. Lay, who faced life in prison, was scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 23. Nicknamed "Kenny Boy" by President Bush, Lay led Enron's meteoric rise from a staid natural gas pipeline company formed by a 1985 merger to an energy and trading conglomerate that reached No. 7 on the Fortune 500 in 2000 and claimed $101 billion in annual revenues. He was convicted May 25 along with former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling of defrauding investors and employees by repeatedly lying about Enron's financial strength in the months before the company plummeted into bankruptcy protection in December 2001. Lay was also convicted in a separate non-jury trial of bank fraud and making false statements to banks, charges related to his personal finances. Lay had built Enron into a high-profile, widely admired company, the seventh-largest publicly traded in the country. But Enron collapsed after it was revealed the company's finances were based on a web of fraudulent partnerships and schemes, not the profits that it reported to investors and the public. When Lay and Skilling went on trial in U.S. District Court Jan. 30, it had been expected that Lay, who enjoyed great popularity throughout Houston as chairman of the energy company, might be able to charm the jury. But during his testimony, Lay ended up coming across as irritable and combative. He also sounded arrogant, defending his extravagant lifestyle, including a $200,000 yacht for wife Linda's birthday party, despite $100 million in personal debt and saying "it was difficult to turn off that lifestyle like a spigot." Both he and Skilling maintained that there had been no wrongdoing at Enron, and that the company had been brought down by negative publicity that undermined investors' confidence. His defense didn't help his case with jurors. "I wanted very badly to believe what they were saying," juror Wendy Vaughan said after the verdicts were announced. "There were places in the testimony I felt their character was questionable." Lay was born in Tyrone, Mo. and spent his childhood helping his family make ends meet. His father ran a general store and sold stoves until he became a minister. Lay delivered newspapers and mowed lawns to pitch in. He attended the University of Missouri, found his calling in economics, and went to work at Exxon Mobil Corp. predecessor Humble Oil & Refining upon graduation. He joined the Navy, served his time at the Pentagon, and then served as undersecretary for the Department of the Interior before he returned to business. He became an executive at Florida Gas, then Transco Energy in Houston, and later became CEO of Houston Natural Gas. In 1985, HNG merged with InterNorth in Omaha, Neb. to form Enron, and Lay became chairman and CEO of the combined company the next year.
  24. Thanks Chuck. I guess I was just expecting the typical automated confirmation. Even with their limited selection it seems like a great place to buy from... -van
