Neither would I. I simply thought that Genell knew something I didn't, as a simple check with the AMG itself reveals that 'Waltz' was recorded several years before the Clark tune. Right... although generally I wouldn't use AMG as a way of trying to date anything. I wouldn't either, but Evans' own first recording of the tune was in September, 1956. This is well documented, and is long before any of Clark's recordings.

I've never heard this either, but I guess it explains the 1946 year of birth that most jazz references give for Rene. Jackie would have been 14 or 15 (depending in which year of birth you believe for Jackie) when Rene was born. Not impossible, but unlikely.

Pity the band never came to the States - I only got to enjoy them on record. I like the early stuff a lot, especially "Now Hear Our Meanin'" (Columbia) and "The Golden Eight" (Blue Note). Another really adventurous record they made was "Change of Scene" with Stan Getz. Took me years to track this one down!

His tone is swirling around in my head as I type these words. What a drag. He gave us dozens or really classic recordings. This set contains music recorded at several sessions. On six tracks recorded 1/24/57, Burrell is the guitarist.
