Miles Davis’ lost album “Rubberband” set for release
David Ayers replied to ghost of miles's topic in New Releases
Oh and I bought the Coltrane Lost Album. I must be mad. -
Since you can hear this composer so much in concert I generally avoid recordings. I thought these might be cool to dabble in but am finding them a bit underwhelming. Nice sounding but a bit smooth, maybe? Can't deal with recordings of piano concertos (in general) so sticking to symphonies. Meanwhile here's what I've got in the car - on CD, with apologies to Jim for the eventual environmental impact (he's right, he's right - just don't tell him...)

Miles Davis’ lost album “Rubberband” set for release

As you can see, I fritter my money away quite senselessly. -
Great example and maybe for us the most notable. Other labels did this actually - IIRC Intakt came went and came back.

Miles Davis’ lost album “Rubberband” set for release

I did buy one CD this year. It is quite good. For the rest, streaming... PS Caught in a lie! It is FOUR CDs, and two downloads. Oh and a box set. Darn. Oh and I put TWO box sets in my amazon basket and then took them out again. And I've got one on pre-order. That's what I call keeping up with the Lonsons. Enjoying this one a LOT just at the moment: On the question of what gets removed from Spotify - in this case likely as a result of Sue MIngus pursuing boots - take a look at my Mingus 1964 list from a few years ago: -

Well, as Lon would say, I don't do downloads. Who can be bothered really? I'll either stream or buy. Watch this space... -

While we’re at it, can anybody fill me in on this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lost-Quintet-Miles-Davis/dp/B07TC5PNXS/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?keywords=miles+davis&qid=1568441152&rnid=1642204031&s=music&sr=1-2 Oh! Robert! I see you already wrote this up on amazon! -
You could investigate the free, ad-supported version of Spotify and if you like it go to the $10/month version with full functionality.

Thankfully, music itself has not gone out of fashion. A case where the medium is not the message.

@Rooster_Ties Sure, iTunes is a pain. With the streaming services you just pull it directly on to your phone. No laptop needed. iTunes is toast!
-
You can just load music over WiFi at home and then listen to it without data usage in the car. Same as with downloads.

There is an outfit which collects academic books at my university. They state that they make a donation to charity from the profits, and sell about half of what they collect (maybe on amazon, I don't know). Not very transparent but it meets two goals: half of the books reach a potential reader, and some probably small amount of cash goes to charity. They are a business, though, and what this highlights is that the work of disposing of books is considerable - at least on their model it pays for itself. Re. my above example, how much work would it be for people who want to dump 500 or 5000 books or CDs to sell everything one-by-one on amazon or ebay? The library donation models saves weeks or months of work and would give the donor a good feeling - except that nobody else wants to take on the burden of labor and storage which the donor is trying to avoid.
-
Re. music: people love it, but not the CD medium. So no loss of interest there. Re. books: of course people buy books. They are easy to find and mostly inexpensive. But let’s say you have 5000 books that you want to get rid of. Do you want them? No. Do you want 5000 of mine? No. So what really are these piles of paper? Items that mostly cost very little to make, by the way.

Amen to that. Whatever it means.

Helpful for in-car listening too. That’s the only place I get to play CDs any more. And weekdays now I cycle. So...

Donated books usually just get sold. Why do we think our old tat is such a gift if we don’t even want it ourselves any more? It costs to catalogue and store books (and then monitor their lending and dispose of the ones that are never borrowed). A cash donation to create a new library wing would go a lot further - but all we want is to free up storage spaces for ourselves, isn’t it?

The credits on the CD ‘label’ of the McLean release seem strongly to indicate that this is licensed. But who knows?

Someone told me he heard an industry expert talking about the state of classical music, and there the view was that all was fine: concert sales, hard copy sales, download and streaming - all doing well. Not quite the perspective we are taking about here. Of course, classical music is a bit more of an industry than jazz so perspectives are different. In any case, it is the viability of making music which is at stake behind the question of hard copy sales, which we maybe over-emphasise a bit on this board (me included!).

I see on the Fnac site that they also did Don Wilkerson Preach Brother! Plus a few jazz vinyls. And thats it. Emergency over.

In fact a search came up with this: https://www.fnac.com/e62672/CULTURE-FACTORY

What do we know about this very limited 24-bit vinyl-feel reissue series? No info here and sorry if I missed it elsewhere. Here is one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Let-Freedom-Ring-Jackie-Mclean/dp/B07VJWY95F/ref=sr_1_232?fst=as%3Aoff&qid=1567885456&refinements=p_n_date%3A182239031&rnid=182236031&s=music&sr=1-232

Sure, the Japanese market has always been like this. I'm just noticing the window of purchase opportunity shrinking everywhere now.
-
Well this is the thing. Newly released or pre-owned in store: no problem. New releases ordered online near the release date: fine. So much else turns into sleuthing. Big waste of time. At that point: stream. Frustrating, though.

I get what the reasons might be, but I’m wondering if you guys have noticed it happening?
