There's a Brötzmann/Adasiewicz/Edwards/Noble release due on Otoroku, and a Brötzmann/Sharrock due on Trost.

I was listening to the original two vinyl record set last week..... As much as I think I need of that - I partly feel it's one of those where sorting out the murkiness would only serve to clarify the disorder. Oh what am I saying - CDJapan here I come!

Russian Illustrations to LoTR (1993)
David Ayers replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Thanks Guy. You other two - get a room! One thing I found myself wondering about was other LoTR illustrations in whatever country before the movies took over control of the imagery. There's not likely to be much at the level of these 1993 images but I am curious. A theme there about how films come to govern and own the books they draw on. I don't even know where or whether these illustrations were published - just passing on a link there and haven't investigated further.... -
What classical music would you like to be recorded?
David Ayers replied to David Ayers's topic in Classical Discussion
This was just today on Austrian Classical Music Station Oe1 : http://oe1.orf.at/programm/376018 I believe you can stream the performance for another 7 days.... Cool, thanks! I have seen him do it - the hope is for a commercial recording. In the meantime this is very welcome! -

The Foote is on YouTube. I'm listening to it now! -

I am thinking myself here of repertoire that I have heard an artist perform which I think should and maybe could be issued. This is just for fun though so I'd also like to hear about repertoire you have heard performed but there is no recording, or maybe things that need doing again, or maybe things that you never heard in any context and would love to have access to. Please do tell us why! My starter is Leonidas Kavakos in Dutilleux, L'Arbre des songes, and Szymanowski 2. He has performed both of these in recent years, but his label has so far favored more established repertoire. I have hopes though. Oh and I need to say why, which is simply that I love Kavakos playing and it was a pleasure to hear him do these works. It is to be hoped that a major label contract will not straitjacket him.

From that article: I lost patience with this article. Who is the imaginary moronic 'we' which thinks like that? Who is the genius Tapscott who has spotted that being online is quite good? And why this fantasy that 'kids' are somehow ahead of 'adults' in knowing that 'we' live in a 'digital' world? That world is prepared and created by adults, and we 'adults' were living in it before these imaginary 'kids' were born. Agreed that you do hear this shallow stuff about 'attention span' peddled in the media, but not by people who you'd pay any attention to. Kids are just learning - don't over-credit that - but I guess many adults stopped learning a while ago. Those are the ones who imagine their 'kids' to be a race of geniuses rather than - as the article accidentally reveals - just kids playing with toys. Pun aside, you actually might be! I have most elements of this in my head, but whether I'll publish it is a different matter. I do occasionally present work on music but not, so far, on this question.

Something like a Heideggerian poetics of music is needed. It would not be based on genre, although genre would inevitably be a subset of that discussion. Heidegger on the topic of boredom might be a starting point. Allen might be sympathetic to that. I can't spell it all out here and now, but I am getting round to it. Some day.

And how about the new covers for Tippin The Scales, My Conception and K. B. Blues? And yes, analog tape kills everything, nothing new about that.

The great Tony Gwynn has died
David Ayers replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Padres fan here. Sad news. Never forget the colossal 'pock' of Gwynn hitting it out of the park. Only saw him in later years when he couldn't always produce the running to match the hitting! -
Oh come on!

Always been true that country has produced great articulate and feelingful adult music. A mistake to equate popular music with music aimed at children. The criticism that can be made would concern the scientific segregation of music markets which involves the creation of music specifically for the very young. But young people grow up and move on. And I speak as someone who loves the Spice Girls.

Actually HP I basically agree with those people. I can love jazz and improv for what it is, but not for what it isn't. Anyone who can't see the limitations of jazz basically can't see it.

As long as we agree that Hendrix was in no way a better or more complex guitarist than I am then I'm happy. And Peas Pudding Hot is right up there as a melody with My Favorite Things.

Yeah it's long... It is a joy to see it done though.

Let us know if it is sold out. That seems more key than age. And nice to be free from the beery toe-tappers...

How about improving your understanding of the French Revolution? or improving your French? or just playing the French Horn better?
-
A bit like piano grades. Inferior minds believe that moving through the grades represents a kind of 'progress' in which you get 'better'. Educators in general foster this notion of improvement. Thankfully in the uk we have noticed nothing is better than anything else. Just different. Though whether we could come up with a better way of describing difference is moot.

Ah now I can do it, not in amazon app but at amazon via safari. As you were.
-
So yesterday the Amazon app on my iPhone would allow me to order and pay for downloads directly from the phone. Last week this was not possible. And today again it is not possible. Does anybody know what is going on with the Amazon app? PS I only ask this because I went there to try and download Hum Dono!

The audience for Ragtime has begun to slip a little bit too, I've noticed.

Between this, the last shop standing thread, and the general necrophilia and nostalgia...
