I'd be interested in Tippin the Scales as version I've got could be bettered I'd imagine. Yeah - they could have played better...
-
Thanks for the link. A lot of titles that people will go for - Blue John, The Rajah, Tippin' the Scales, Far Away Lands...

I also like that Iyer singled out Live in Seattle. Also find it sort of sweet that some of the contributors in the article have such belief in the meaning and purpose of the history of their own taste. I guess the idea of the 'album' is itself dating. In fact, choosing an 'album' can be hard as one great track does not an album make. Some people struggle to count to four. Those people must never be the banker in a game of Monopoly.

A Thought Regarding Universal now owning Blue Note
David Ayers replied to margolbe's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well, who knows. My guess is that the larger Mosaic boxes are mainly not by names that could sell well, and the Selects don't really fit the universal.it model - too small. -
FS: Cecil Taylor misc on CD
David Ayers replied to AmirBagachelles's topic in Offering and Looking For...
It is a pity that CT's discography is really *so* hard to collect, and has been for a long time. -
Sigh. I am sure people will love being at this event, but I guess for me the romanticism of Braxton's supposed exclusion or marginality - as in the articles linked - is just boring and wrong. From what I have heard, his writing for voice is imitative and not so interesting. Whether he can write for theatre I don't know. Maybe someone who knows modern and contemporary opera inside out needs to write about this, but someone who wants to say AB is 'blasting opera forward' is speaking from no base whatsoever, as far as I can make out. I guess if this brings people to opera it's all good.

Happy Birthday Allen Lowe

Belated best wishes - keep on supplying the culture which the culture lacks! -
This set is a treat for me since I had heard all of the officially released early 70s Miles except Fillmore, so it's all new. As interested as I am in Miles though I remain a non-fan, of his whole career. What's great about this set is that it is a vivid document, not least because of the sound, and shows clearly how the band worked and what it was trying to do. Hippies have a lot to answer for. Get a haircut!

Well, that was a common opinion. The fusion seems much tamer now and perspectives change.

Hungarian Documentary on Free Jazz
David Ayers replied to David Ayers's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Why does Broetzmann sound like he speaks German with an English accent?!? PS you will also need a bit of Polish and Japanese, if you can't read the Hungarian subtitles. Only a bit. -
Short interviews and clips from Brotzmann, McPhee, Vandermark, Bauer, Watts, etc.

Black Saint/Soul Note Box Sets

I feel we're due a new batch... -
All these parcels dropping in the mail...It's like second Christmas!

I agree, and having just worked through Bootleg Vol 3 then turned to We Want Miles the gulf in interest and quality is pretty notable. I guess folks who own the single disc of We Want Miles aren't going to be racing to get the additional tracks.
-
Ah! Thanks Lon. I was wondering if it was in the Complete Collection, which I don't own. The extra music is not so very essential, probably, but the current release is not very expensive so... I think they could have included at least one of the omitted alternates, but maybe these are just not all that good - that Miles! x3 seems to be one of the least distributed official Miles title ever.
-
That earlier 2 CD version must have been elusive - I can't see it on amazon. It also doesn't seem to have impacted Losin's discography that I can tell. Good that it's back then. What was the original year? The appearance on spotify may signal a wider release.
-
The penny finally drops . I assume the extra tracks are the rest of the elusive Miles! Miles! Miles! Japan-only release. PS this new edition is on Spotify. I tried to work it out and it appears the new edition carries the extra tunes from Miles! x 3 only where these tunes don't appear on We Want Miles. So these are Ursula, Aida, Fat Time. Alternatives of Back Street Betty and My Man's Gone Now are not included.

for all you Dexter Gordon nay-sayers -
David Ayers replied to AllenLowe's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I like the way the piano is recorded. So used to terrible piano sound on historical jazz recordings. The entrance is staged of course. The walk to the entrance is shot separately and spliced in. The cigarette stunt is prepared too - he isn't smoking when he goes in. Tried to work out how many cameras they used but couldn't. Good and respectful job though. And the behind the beat playing is all real. Sometimes just too mannered for my liking. Who are the rest of the band? Thanks to Allen for posting. Edited to add: answered my own question on this. Hadn't got past third track where it changes to another concert. Seems to be an entirely legal upload of this dvd http://jazzicons.com/ji2_gordon.html Re. Allen's comment on drugs - he doesn't look that intact to me, but who can tell. -
Thanks for posting. I'd be interested to see the score.

Couldn't we just bring up the April's fool threads from previous years?
