  1. Terrible news. What a shame ...
  2. I passed it on to a fellow board member. Not too much happening, or not enough for me. Oliver Nelson is the highlight.
  3. Starbucks has their own label, and Barnes & Noble is going bankrupt. Where does Was suppose he'll sell these things?
  4. I know him best for his work with Teddy Charles, and really enjoy what he contributed.
  5. Can't wait to get my hands on it. FWIW, if Amazon's price drops before shipping on a preorder, you'll be charged the lowest price.
  6. Honestly didnt know he was from Chicago I've enjoyed his work as a leader all-around, as well as his contributions to Snakeoil and Ceramic Dog. As a leader/composer he's straight out of the Tony Williams lineage, creating an intriguing group sound instead of foregrounding percussion, or working in a standard horns + rhythm setting. Very interesting player.
  7. I listened to Atomic Clock on Spotify last night. I had never heard of this group before this thread. The album was pretty stunning. It's recorded in the raw, booming style which suits the music great, but I do hear what you mean about Rainey. I haven't heard tons of albums he plays on, but the best is probably Berne's The Shell Game. He destroys on that one.
  8. What Clifford said. I've passed up Akisakila at $25-30 many times. Need to go in for it eventually.
  9. Any records available?
  10. Recent releases by Nicole Mitchell, Josh Berman, Frank Rosaly, Josh Stein, Jason Adasiewicz, Ernest Dawkins and others are among the best around. I always look forward to what they've got.
  11. Sounds great. Also nice to see John Lindberg involved.
  12. I'll take Etcetera.
  13. Have you heard Absolute Zero? If Foxy was Irabagon's display of extended time playing a la Rollins and Trane, then this is his display of extended technique a la Parker and Mitchell. It's breathtaking.
  14. That's a shame, especially since you can ship a single CD for less than $2.
  15. The update scheduled for May has been pushed back to at least September. What a shame :/
  16. That's wonderful.
  17. I confess I didn't know this. Interesting.
  18. Is Konitz the living (name) jazz musician with the longest working career? His first work is with Teddy Hill in 1945, 68 years ago. That's amazing. The recording ban just prior makes this tough, but did anyone else of note who's still alive record before then? Roy Haynes, Sonny Rollins, & Barry Harris are close but all three played bebop, whereas Konitz was still working in the swing/big band idiom, which makes it a bit more impressive still; such a link to such a particular time.
  19. Nice slice of Iowa jazz history, thanks Chuck. Do you recall where Little Bills was?
  20. It's a crime that Bley's Savoy sides are not available. Seriously one of the major oversights out there.
  21. Got the CDs yesterday, and enjoy them both, the Wheelhouse more on first listen. Ive only heard Rempis as a sideman, and he has no trouble sustaining ideas or interest at length. I do wish the Phalanx group was a bit more rhythmic & groove-based with the two drummer approach, but we must accept the art as its presented, not as we wish it was. All the more reason to go back. I'm looking forward to seeing what else he puts out.
  22. Well, I think I might've tainted the sample with some Ellington and Prez here and there. Next time, though! Really though, I do hope my son grows up with an appreciation for jazz, or at least at fondness for having grown up around it. But we'll see when we see.
  23. Jimmy on tenor in 1965 was something else entirely. Post-Trane, post-lots of stuff.
  24. I think my 2 y/o is the unwitting volunteer ...
  25. Bump again.
